The surname of the Colin Chandler (Elliott Gould) character was named after crime-mystery writer Raymond Chandler. Previously, Gould has recently starred as Philip Marlowe in director Robert Altman's film adaptation of Raymond Chandler's 'The Long Goodbye' (1973).
When Philip Marlowe is detained and fingerprinted, he wipes some of the ink on his face and begins to mimic Al Jolson's character Jakie Rabinowitz in The Jazz Singer. The detective sees this and mentions Al Jolson's name.
