Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The depiction of the Jewish character named "Shylock" would be deemed anti-Semitic by today's standards. However, this viewpoint was commonplace in Shakespeare's time, and it would not have even been remotely controversial. If understood in its historical context, this is not offensive.
  • The courtroom scene is quite intense, but nothing graphic or violent is ever seen or depicted

Violence & Gore

  • Shylock makes a deal with Antonio that if he cannot pay him back he has to let him cut off a pound of flesh from his body. When Antonio loses all his money due to sudden financial hardship, Shylock demands that he be allowed to follow the agreement and cut a pound of flesh from his chest in the court. The judge initially says it is acceptable for Shylock to do so according to the bond, but he does not end up succeeding in the end.
