This underrated film is, to me, Fassbinder's best. One can look at it the way he likes best, to me was a grotesque fun! the rhythm never falls, as often happens in Fassbinder's films, the actors are apparently having fun while acting, especially Helen Vita. The whole setting is an enormous cage of fools, there's not a character who's really in his mind (except maybe Luise, Walter's wife), mirroring the folly of the intellectual world of the times. "Go work in a factory, you'll feel better", Luise says to Walter who feels misunderstood and uninspired by her mediocrity and ugly-looking appearance. Definitely worth watching, although very hard to find. To my knowledge, the Italian television has broadcasted it only twice and on "pay-tv".
