WB Animation’s films and shows have always been streets ahead of DC’s live-action offerings. The studio is known for creating shows such as Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League, as well as films such as The Dark Knight Returns and others. The studio’s latest offering Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths will be wrapping up the Tomorrowverse.
The studio has gone through several franchises such as the Timmverse, Dcamu, and the latest Tomorrowverse. However, one of the most beloved franchises that explored many characters in the DC roster was the Dcamu which ended with Justice League Dark: Apokalips War. One of the reasons why the latter is beloved by fans is due to the ‘no limitations’ rule that the studio had which gave freedom to the writers to hold no bars. Spoilers ahead.

Red Barrels has announced that The Outlast Trials has now reached over 2 million players across PC, Xbox, and PS5 since its Early Access launch back in May 2023. With the game now out of Early Access and available in full, Red Barrels is celebrating the game’s one-month anniversary with the first limited-time event later this week in “Toxic Shock“. Alongside the announcement comes a new accolades trailer, which just so happens to feature a quote from Harrison’s review.
With over 2 million player having braved the trials, Red Barrels also dropped a few stats. There have been over 38 million deaths in The Outlast Trials so far, with enough blood spilled to submerge NYC’s Central Park under a two-meter-deep sea of blood. On a less morbid note, over 600,000 participants have fought their way to freedom and became Reborn.
On that note, players will be facing new challenges beginning on April 16 with the Toxic Shock event.

After premiering last year at Fantastic Fest, Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle, the third film in James Nguyen‘s authentic so-bad-it’s-good franchise, arrives on VOD platforms tomorrow!
In the latest from Severin Films, the birds are back, and global warming has them roiled!
“When global warming triggers climate chaos along the Northern California coast, two scientific researchers will discover tender romance, awkward dancing, overly earnest moralizing, appalling CGI, automatic weapons, and a plague of attacks by sea eagles that could lead to the extinction of life on earth. Or as one character wisely proclaims in this conclusion of Nguyen’s immortal cinematic vision, ‘We have to accept our fate. It is death.'”
Birdemic: Shock and Terror, which was somewhat of a revelation and easily one of the best bad movies ever made, was acquired out of a hilariously legendary screening in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival by Severin Films.

As Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and others in his coven of executives continue to slice and dice through DC properties like Deathstroke on a bender, a report from Variety suggests that DC’s Titans and Doom Patrol are in danger of being canceled. Both shows have new seasons hitting HBO Max later this year, but after that, who knows? While Titans and Doom Patrol are beloved by a sizable portion of the DC fandom, both are considered niche programs, and the new guard may have a difficult time justifying their expense.
Fear of Titans and Doom Patrol getting shelved is intense as DC fans have watched one project after another disappear over the past few weeks. Warner Bros. Discovery already canceled plans to develop a Strange Adventures anthology show with Kevin Smith and has done away with Wonder Twins, a movie starring Riverdale‘s Kj Apa and Young Sheldon‘s Isabel May.

David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” lived up to the hype as one of the more controversial and subversive titles at the Cannes Film Festival this year, even one that has included pooping zombies (“Final Cut”), projectile vomit (“Triangle of Sadness”) and a wandering donkey (“Eo”), among others.
But Cronenberg on Tuesday in his press conference turned the tables away from whatever outrage his film might have caused to the real world outrage, speaking out against the impending repeal of the abortion rights legal decision Roe v. Wade. The Canadian director did not mince words and suggested the real body horror on women’s bodies has to do with what’s going on in the Supreme Court.
“We think the US has gone completely bananas – we can’t believe that elected officials are saying the things they’re saying,” Cronenberg said Tuesday. “Not just about Roe vs. Wade but about everything else.

Movie Review‘Khiladi’ is a film meant only to please Ravi Teja and his fans, so it is inevitable that the movie’s director, Ramesh Varma Penmetsa, goes overboard.Balakrishna GaneshanA good film should be like a journey. You should be immersed in that world. Some characters you might love, others might be disliked, but basically you should be able relate to them. Khiladi’s director Ramesh Varma Penmetsa also seems to believe in this theory albeit partially, but instead of taking us on a journey, he takes us for a ride. Khiladi stars actors Ravi Teja (playing the role of Mohan Gandhi), Meenakshi Chaudhary (Pooja) and Dimple Hayathi (Chandini) in lead roles. Khiladi opens with a tragic premise of Gandhi serving a prison sentence on false charges. He is accused of killing his own family members including his wife. And Pooja, who is a psychology student, ends up doing a thesis on him.

Hey everyone! We have a busy week of home media releases on tap, so let’s go ahead and just dive right into everything. Two of my favorite films of 2021—Julia Ducournau’s Titane and Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho—are both coming home on Tuesday and I cannot recommend them enough. For those of you with little monsters, The Addams Family 2 is making its way onto various formats, and if you’re a franchise completist, Candyman: Day of the Dead is getting the Vestron Video Collector’s Series treatment this week as well.
We also have a bunch of Italian horror movies arriving on Tuesday, including Mario Bava’s Shock, plus The Stendhal Syndrome and Deep Red from Dario Argento. Blue Underground is showing some love to The Toolbox Murders with their 4K release of the film, and Rlje Films is set to release An Unquiet Grave on DVD,...

“Death is like going on a trip, darling, only one doesn’t come back.”
Mario Bava’s final horror film Shock (1977) will be available on Blu-ray January 18th from Arrow Video
In a career spanning four decades and encompassing virtually every genre under the sun, Mario Bava inspired multiple generations of filmmakers, from Dario Argento to Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton. Best remembered for his gothic horror movies, for his final feature, Shock, he eschewed the grand guignol excesses of Black Sabbath or Blood and Black Lace for a more intimate portrait of mental breakdown in which true horror comes from within.
Dora moves back into her old family home with her husband, Bruno, and Marco, her young son from her previous marriage. But domestic bliss proves elusive as numerous strange and disturbing occurrences transpire, while Dora is haunted by a series of nightmares and hallucinations, many of them involving her dead former husband.

Disney/Pixar’s “Soul” continues to charm China with sales of $13.8 million over its second weekend, more than double its $5.5 million Christmas debut, thanks to strong word of mouth. It was the highest-grossing foreign import of the New Year weekend, far outstripping “Wonder Woman 1984” and even Hayao Miyazaki’s older but beloved animation “Ponyo.”
The weekend was huge. Industry consultancy, Artisan Gateway reported it as weighing in at $199 million, and other sources claim that is the biggest ever New Year weekend on record.
But the course of the next week promises to be disrupted by reactions to two separate plagiarism problems. State media reported that “The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity,” and “Bath Buddies” will both be removed from circulation from Monday.
Director Guo Jingming on Thursday publicly apologized for plagiarizing part of another author’s work in his 2003 novel “Never Flowers in Never Dreams.” Now, his new film “The Yin-Yang Master,...

Mario, Mario, wherefore art thou, sweet Mario? I imagine he’s dust by now, having passed away in 1980. His films, however, live forever. One that is rarely mentioned is his swan song, Shock (1977); a shame too, because it is much stronger (and more effective) than critics have labeled it through the years, offering up a melee of evil kids, possession, telekinesis, and other assorted sub-genres in a compelling way.
Released on his home turf in August, Shock didn’t receive an American release until March of ’79 under the title Beyond the Door II, cashing in on the hit from a couple of years earlier while nothing to do with said film. No matter what it was called, critics were unkind and the film floated into the ephemera of the occasional mom and pop video store. But time has been pretty gentle with a film unfairly compared to Bava’s earlier...

Believe it or not, there was once a time when Jaden Smith was being pegged to follow in his famous father’s footsteps and become a successful actor in his own right, instead of gaining a bizarre cult status as one of the internet’s favorite pseudo-philosophers and the subject of countless memes.
To be fair, his acting career got off to an impressive start after the youngster received rave reviews for his work alongside Will in The Pursuit of Happyness at the age of just eight years old, while four years later he played the lead role in The Karate Kid remake. Jackie Chan may have been the main selling point of the project, but Smith gave a good account of himself as Dre Parker in the surprisingly popular update that raked in over $350 million at the box office.

A movie based on DC Comics’ “Static Shock” is being put into development, filmmaker Reginald Hudlin said at DC Fandome on Saturday.
“One of the things we’re really excited about, we really want to live up to the name of the company, Milestone Media,” said Hudlin. “When we spoke to Jim [Lee] about reviving the Milestone line, we said ‘Look, we all know this has been a hit comic book and hit animated series. It’s time to expand back into all those areas and then some.’ So we’re in serious conversations about, as we’re launching the comic book series, developing the ‘Static Shock’ movie. That will be a theatrical feature film.”
Created by Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis and Derek T. Dingle, African-American teenager Virgil Ovid Hawkins becomes a new kind of hero, named Static, after exposure to a radioactive chemical renders him capable of electromagnetic control and generation.

When System Shock first released in 1994, it was something of a revelation for the first-person shooter genre. While many gamers and developers were still trying to wrap their heads around the innovations of Doom, developer Looking Glass delivered an atmospheric sci-fi masterpiece that was in many ways a precursor to titles like Half-Life and Deus Ex. What’s arguably most impressive about the game, however, is just how well it’s concept has aged all these years later.
The fact was not lost on Nightdive Studios, the developer in charge of remaking this sci-fi horror classic for a new generation. If you’ve never heard of Nightdive, don’t feel too bad. The developer’s first major move in the game industry was recovering the rights to the System Shock franchise and using them to put the series back into digital distribution stores. In fact, despite a wealth of veteran development talent on staff,...

While his father Mario probably cast a longer shadow than anyone else in Italian horror cinema, Lamberto Bava has managed to leave a prominent mark on the genre through popular works such as Demons (1985) and Demons 2 (‘86). Today we’re going to rewind the clock to his official directorial debut, Macabre (1980), a truly ludicrous and bizarre film “inspired” by true events. I bet they never happened like this.
Bava Jr. certainly spent his time in the trenches, working for Dario Argento and helping his dad finish Shock (1977); while he wrote the script with friends Roberto Gandus, and Pupi and Antonio Avati as a lark after reading a newspaper story from the U.S., he was given the reins to bring this lurid story to the screen as his official calling card. And bring it he does.
Released three years later Stateside as Frozen Terror, Macabre (aka Macabro) did little business...

System Shock 3, the long-awaited sequel to Irrational’s acclaimed first-person RPG, is still very much alive, the game’s developer has reiterated. First announced back in 2015, Boston-based studio OtherSide Entertainment confirmed that it had acquired licensing rights from IP holder Night Dive Studios to commence work on a follow-up, having provided but a handful of progress updates since.
With growing concern over ongoing radio silence leading many to reach the conclusion that the project had at some point been canned, it appears the reality couldn’t be more different. Despite being forced to make a number of layoffs in recent months, OtherSide’s Walter Somol says System Shock 3 is still very much alive and kicking, with a new concept for the ambitious title apparently “coming along nicely.”
The full statement, posted on OtherSide’s official forums, reads:
We’re still here. We’re all working remotely right now, probably like most of you.

Most horror fans would welcome watching possessed kids run amuck with power tools above their head or wantonly parade paranormal powers instead of stealthily sliding cucumbers behind placid cats like normal children, but there’s nothing more maddening than seeing horror films shamelessly nip from the classics. Director Nicholas McCarthy’s The Prodigy is an evil kid flick which adheres to the textbook; adopting fladgets and tart devices while just about hitting plot beats and deviating enough so it’s not completely cumbersome.

After nearly 40 years in the business and with 22 officially credited features as a director, Mario Bava made his final feature film with 1977’s Shock, also known to U.S. audiences as Beyond the Door II. Just three years after its release, Bava died of a heart attack. He was 65 years old.
Of all his horror films, Shock feels the least like what we have come to expect of a “Mario Bava movie.” While most of his work has an aesthetic and feel that’s very specific to his sensibilities, Shock seems like it could have been made by any number of the Italian horror directors working at that time. This is probably because, as the story goes, the movie actually was made by another Italian horror director working at the time: Bava’s son Lamberto, who co-wrote the screenplay and is a talented filmmaker in his own right, with titles...

Above: Us one sheet for Black Sunday (Mario Bava, Italy, 1960).Earlier this week I featured Francine Spiegel and Dylan Haley’s terrific new poster for the re-release of Mario Bava’s Kill, Baby...Kill!, which has been playing at New York’s Quad Cinema in a 50th anniversary, 2K restoration. (Full disclosure: this week I started working for the film’s distributor, Kino Lorber, although I can take no credit for that design.) Today, the Quad follows up that run with Mondo Bava: 20-film retrospective of Bava’s films with many of the films on 35mm.Though Bava made over 30 films in various genres over the course of more than two decades, he is best known as perhaps the greatest stylist in horror, the maestro of the macabre. The posters for his horror films may not always convey Bava’s sense of style (notable exceptions being the French posters...

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash we have very little reason to be interested in them. – Pauline Kael.
The above quote from the late, legendary American film critic Kael was most certainly not referring to Lamberto Bava’s Demons (1985), but a lot of films in our beloved genre bow to this description. Demons is great trash – it wants nothing more to assault your senses with a barrage of images and sound for 88 minutes before you even know what hit you, and does so while breathing that rarified Italian air.
But I’m sure she was referring to a film like Demons – one made with a ton of style, by a filmmaker impassioned with his chosen topic, as ridiculous as that plays on the screen. And make no mistake, Demons is ridiculous; as a matter of fact, it starts there before rapidly ascending to the sublime.

As the 1970s became the 1980s, the Italians – led by gutslingers like Fulci, Deodato, Lenzi, D’Amato and the like – were pushing the limits of on-screen violence, offering up an endless spate of disgusting, over-the-top spectacle shockers that used graphic gore as a character, not…

For as much criticism as the horror genre receives for being sexist and misogynistic, it has a long history of strong characters and iconic performances from women, whether it’s Elsa Lanchester in The Bride of Frankenstein, Heather Langenkamp in A Nightmare on Elm Street, Janet Leigh in Psycho, or Sharni Vinson in You’re Next. In the late 1970s and ’80s, actresses who stood out within the genre were dubbed “Scream Queens.” But that title doesn’t do justice to Daria Nicolodi, frequent collaborator of Dario Argento and a titan of Italian horror. That’s because Daria Nicolodi is no Scream Queen. Daria Nicolodi is a goddamn goddess.
A too often unsung hero of genre cinema, Daria Nicolodi helped shape the face of Italian horror both in front of and behind the camera. The story goes that Florence-born Nicolodi was so taken with Argento’s first film, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage,...

It’s pretty much impossible to leave a film set in the Marvel universe without having something to talk about, whether it’s a notable character, a plot development, or a storyline that you really enjoyed. Mostly, though, when you leave a superhero film, your focus isn’t on the present — it’s on the future. We want to know where this franchise is going. We want to know now. Thus, we speculate. And speculate and speculate and speculate…and sometimes we dissect just enough to keep us busy until more detailed intel comes out.

Photo: Alvino Italy's hardcore hellektro-house duo Mr. K and Splattaboy first emerged from the extreme metal scene – a transition they share with several horror-styling dance music artists, including Fearnet fave Drop Goblin – before eventually finding their current calling as purveyors of Satanic club grooves, with a heavy emphasis on horror atmospheres and monster bass lines. Adopting the diabolical handle Belzebass, the team rose to prominence partly thanks to a lineup of well-received remixes, including tracks from their Freakz Me Out label-mates Cyberpunkers (whose horror Ep Shock we reviewed back in November). The devilish duo returns next week with a new unholy offering: the heavier, more polished three-track Ep Welcome to Hell, which is equal parts haunting, violent and strangely exhilarating. Majestic synth and organ chords herald the opening of “Black in Back” (that's not a typo, and this is not an AC/DC cover), which wastes no time before pushing the limits of buzzy,...

From random films with altered names to unrelated storylines, we take a look at 15 incredibly tenuous horror and sci-fi film sequels...
The profit-driven nature of filmmaking usually means that, if a movie's a hit, sequels follow. And it's sometimes the case that, particularly in the realm of low-budget sci-fi and horror, those sequels are trotted out in a rush, or don't have anything to do with the film they're following.
This isn't to say that the sequels on this list are necessarily bad - it's a proper mixed bag of the great, the mediocre and the downright awful - but in each instance, these sequels have only vague links to their predecessors, or worse still, they're entirely different films rebranded to fit an existing franchise.
Our list is by no means definitive - rather, we've chosen a collection of films that we find the most memorable.

We're back with another installment in our Italian thriller feature series, this time with an often overlooked little 1983 gem from Lamberto Bava. If that name sounds familiar, it should: Lamberto is not only the son of horror icon Mario Bava, who arguably kicked the giallo genre into high gear with his incredibly stylish Blood and Black Lace, but since then he's developed his own cult following thanks mainly to the success of the Demons trilogy, produced by Dario Argento and featuring some of Italian horror's most surreal set-pieces and gruesome makeup effects. Before Demons, Lamberto was honing his craft on giallo fare, including uncredited work on his father's final film Shock in 1980. Shortly following Mario's passing, Lamberto helmed his first film Macabre, an oddball psychodrama inspired by Roman Polanski's Repulsion. That one has its fans, but it was really more of a practice run. In my view, he entered...
