Quotes

  • Inspector Sordik : [voiceover, as Christine stares hungrily at meat patties being prepared]  Christine Delaplane was that rare gumbo, a mixture of half-child, half-girl... and all woman.

  • Inspector Sordik : [voiceover, as barefoot heroine despondenty awaits bus]  She was one of those girls who come along about as often as snow in the Bayou, and she was on the run. I could tell that. Hell, girls like that are always on the run, one way or another. Some of them are running from somethin', some are running for somethin', some are running to somethin', some of them are just running.

    [bus arrives]

Inspector Sordik : And around here, they all run to New Orleans. They call it the City that Care Forgotten.

  • Inspector Sordik : [voiceover, as Christine ambles about uncertainly in the mean streets]  The faces never change. The stories never change, and the French Quarter, hell, the French Quarter stays the same.

  • Inspector Sordik : [voiceover, as Christine mingles with city life]  Knew her? Yeah, I knew her. Even before I saw her. She looked around for a while. Did a lot of walking. Did a lot of sitting. They always do that... walk like that... sit like that... like birds when the crumbs are thinning out.

[Christine goes through classifieds in newspaper]

Inspector Sordik : She was looking for her dreams in the Times Tribunal. Man, there's one thing I know about New Orleans. Anybody that wants something real bad, is gonna get it real bad.

  • Inspector Sordik : [voiceover, as Christine continues her search for employment]  Nothing really stopped her. She tried everything. She was so simple, so vulnerable. It made her a snap to tail.

[as the back of a shabbily-dressed man, following her, appears]

Inspector Sordik : That's me, in case you're interested, in the striped sweater. She had that look that made men ache. It made them wanna do something they knew they shouldn't.

[as blond heroine responds to a Help Wanted sign:]

Inspector Sordik : But I just held back. Let my eyes do the walking through that... yellow hair.

[Christine is unsuccessful inside the shop]

Inspector Sordik : I knew it was coming. A girl like that, it had to.

  • Inspector Sordik : [voiceover, as Christine is closely observed by the narrator]  And I just hung on, watching, like a gator eyeballing a swamp bird, waiting for that strike. She had guts, but it was a losing game.

  • Inspector Sordik : [last words]

    [as Kid Ross, off camera]

Inspector Sordik : You all drive home safely, you hear?
