• The "XM-18" grenade launcher used in the movie is a real life weapon. It is called the Manville Gun. It was named after its inventor, Charles Manville, who designed the gun in 1935.
  
  
• Tom Berengerhas said in interviews that around half of his role was omitted from the final release print.
  
  
• The toast given by the French member of the mercenary group is "Vive la mort, vive la guerre, vive le sacre mercenaire." ("Long live death, long live war, long live the cursed mercenary.") • While researching the novel in the early 1970s, author Frederick Forsyth pretended he was actually financing a coup d'etat in Equatorial Guinea.
