In the late 70s/early 80s Operation Countryman tackled corruption in the Metropolitan/City of London Police, severing links with organised crime which had led to an epidemic of armed robbery. British gangsters would indeed forge links with international organised crime partners with the rise of the drug trade in the UK and some of the proceeds would be laundered into financial property developments in London's previously deprived East End.
