  • Although Conan and Valeria are shown together frequently throughout the movie, he only speaks five words to her in the entire film - and they're all in the first thirty seconds after they meet: "You're not a guard", and "No".

  • Conan's response to the Mongol General is an abbreviation of a real quote attributed to Gengis Khan: "The greatest pleasure is to vanquish your enemies and chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth and see those dear to them bathed in tears, to ride their horses and clasp to your bosom their wives and daughters."

  • Conan's opinion of what is best in life is not all that links him to Genghis Khan. Subotai (or Subedei Baghadur) was also the name of Great Khan's general. The fact that Conan is not only chased but to some extent orphaned by dogs also recalls Genghis Khan's well-documented fear of that particular animal. Finally, the writers' preoccupation with steel seems oddly coincidental, given that Genghis Khan's birthname, Temujin, is frequently translated as "finest steel."

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sandahl Bergman did their own stunts, as suitable body doubles couldn't be found.

  • To give the characters' costumes a more authentic and "lived-in" look, Dino De Laurentiis had the cast members wear their costumes both during rehearsals and the actual scene shoots.

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger had to tone down his workout, as his arm/chest muscles were so big that he couldn't wield a sword properly.

  • The swordmaster was played by Kiyoshi Yamasaki, swordmaster for the actors in the film.

  • The fake blood used in the film came in the form of a concentrate, which had to be mixed with water prior to use. Due to the cold weather, it was mixed with vodka (as an anti-freeze) instead. In the scenes in which the actors were supposed to spit the blood, they would swallow it instead, then go back to the special effects man for more.

  • The script called for Conan to throw a torch into the palace's central window/balcony. Schwarzenegger missed on the first attempt, but no retake was possible as the set proceeded to burn to the ground, as intended.

  • There is an enduring urban legend about the so-called "Conan toy line". The story is that the Mattel Toy Company started to make some Conan action figures, but after viewing the film, the executives realized that they couldn't afford to be associated with a film with such graphic sex and violence. They gave their doll blonde hair, called him "He-man", and thus created "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" (1983). However, since the first He-Man figures were released in 1981, the legend appears to be false. In 1984, however, now-defunct toy company Remco released an officially licensed series of Conan action figures. Ironically enough, once the He-Man action figures became immensely popular, numerous knockoffs were produced, including a repainted He-Man figure that had brown hair, making it look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. The knockoff was sold mainly through mom-and-pop dollar stores and came in generic packaging labeled "The Barbarian".

  • The name "Valeria" comes from the heroine of the novella "Red Nails." The theft of the tower in Zamora is from "The Tower of the Elephant." The speech King Osric gives about the throne room becoming a prison echoes a similar passage in "The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune," a King Kull story. The scene where Conan is crucified and kills a vulture with his teeth is from "A Witch Shall Be Born." Finally, the scene where Valeria vows to come back from the dead to save Conan and then does so is from "Queen of the Black Coast."

  • During the scene when Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) points to one of his priestesses and she jumps to her death, a women's free fall record was set at 182 feet by stunt woman Corrie Jansen.

  • Thulsa Doom and his warriors are patterned after the Teutonic knights from Aleksandr Nevskiy (1938). The similarities between the two are very striking. From the helmets, body armor, weapons and mannerisms. Thulsa Doom's even has the same pageboy haircut has the Teutonic Knight's commander. Milius even went on to use the same Prokofiev score for the work prints and pre-release trailers while Poledouris's score was still being worked on.

  • When the Wizard is ritually painting Conan to try to save his life, all symbols and runes are black, except for a certain symbol, shown once in the hands and a few times in his face, which is red. Such symbol, a small man whose arms join over his head in a semicircle, is called "Indalo", and is a very common symbol in the region of Almeria (Spain), in whiich most of the movie was shot.

  • The scene of the crucifixion on the dead tree was shot in Almeria, Spain. When the body of Conan is being magically treated, we can see mysterious magical figures drawn all over his face. One of them is the "indalo" (a red symbol resembling a man with his arms over his head), a traditional symbol of the province of Almerķa used since ancient times by the local inhabitants to expel witches and lightning. Now it has become a symbol and tourist trademark icon for the province and its tourism industry.

  • The dynamic score by Basil Poledouris has been frequently used by other filmmakers as temp tracks in other films. It has also been frequently used in advance trailers and TV spots for other films.

  • Oliver Stone's script placed the Conan story in a post-apocalyptic future rather than the distant past. This was abandoned and the original timeline was restored.

  • The runes on Conan's father's sword are translated as; "Suffer no guilt, ye who wield this in the name of Crom."

  • The life of Conan oddly mirrors that of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Conan's formative years are spent in a small village, then spent in hard manual labor as a slave. Then Conan gains fame and wealth through his physical prowess. Although at first given to wine and women, he eventually abandons his hedonism and uses his skills for acts of heroism. Eventually, Conan becomes a king. In real life, Schwarzenegger was born in a small Austrian village and spent his life bodybuilding. He then becomes famous and wealthy through bodybuilding competitions and action/adventure movies. Schwarzenegger engaged in drug use and womanizing in his past, but gave those up later in life and then campaigned for social causes. Eventually, he was elected Governor of California.

  • The scene with Conan practicing using his sword again after being resurrected by the old wizard, was inspired by the movie One-Eyed Jacks (1961), where Marlon Brando's character practices wielding his weapon of choice, this time a gun, after a near death experience.

  • More spoken dialogue is added for Conan in the German DVD version. In the beginning, when his life is told after being released from the wheel, he is offered a woman to sleep with him. In the original he doesn't say a word, but in the German version you hear him saying "Don't be afraid. I won't hurt you." Obviously, this was only possible, because Arnold Schwarzenegger had his face turned away from the camera.

  • Sterling Hayden was first choice for the role of King Osric but became ill before shooting began.

  • Director John Milius says in the documentary Frazetta: Painting with Fire (2003) that more than a few scenes were dedicated to legendary artist Frank Frazetta and based on his artwork, including the scene in the orgy chamber, Thulsa Doom turning into a snake, a girl chained to a pillar and a climactic fight scene.

  • Conan's response to the Mongol General's question, "What is best in life?" are the main character's very first lines of dialog and it is a full twenty minutes into the movie before he delivers them.

  • Sandahl Bergman says she had the tip of one finger cut off while shooting a swordfight for the picture.

  • The scene in which Conan is covered with the cryptic writings of the wizard (Mako) to protect him from evil spirits is an adaptation of a chapter of "Kwaidan" (1964) titled "Hoichi the Earless". In this chapter, a priest covers Hoichi with Japanese characters, writing out a holy Buddhist text on his body to protect him from the spirits of the dead come to claim Hoichi's life.

  • The Friedrich Nietzsche quotation that opens the movie, "That which does not kill us makes us stronger", is a loose translation of "Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich stärker", which more properly translates as "That which does not kill me, makes me stronger." It's from "Twilight of the Idols", Maxims and Arrows, 8.

  • Thulsa Doom was the enemy of Kull in the original stories, not Conan. He is used in the movie as a replacement for Conan's arch-foe, Thoth-Amon.

  • According to the original script, the tomb where Conan gets his sword was from the lost city of Atlantis.

  • The four dragon heads at the top of the Wheel of Pain are exact replicas of the dragon heads on the Gokstad Ship-a Viking ship of the 9th century.

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger suffered a back injury (among other various assorted injuries) while filming when the dogs who were chasing him jumped him from behind and he fell down the rock he was climbing to escape them.

  • CASTLE THUNDER: Heard during the scene when the spirits try to take Conan's body away.

  • According to producer Raffaella De Laurentiis, pre-production for the movie initially began in Yugoslavia, but due to the political instability in the area, it was ultimately decided to move the rest of the movie's production to Spain.

  • Arnold Schwarzenegger said in the behind the scenes features that during the crucifixion scene, they used a live vulture to peck at his wounds. Then for the close up they used a real dead vulture they found for him to actually bite into its throat. After they cut, they immediately had Arnold rinse his mouth out to avoid disease.

  • The snake cult of Thulsa Doom is modeled after the Flagellants-a cult that arose in Germany at the time of the Plague of the Black Death in the mid 14th. Century. They are wearing similar white robes and some are whipping themselves.

  • Osric was the actual name of several early Anglo Saxon kings who ruled parts of Brittan from the early 7-to mid 8th. century.

  • The DVD commentary promises a third movie a few times, but the third movie was shelved entirely.
