Tom Savini turned down an offer to do the special effects for Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) and worked on this movie instead.
The budget of the film was so low it was shot with only a crew of three, including director Russo himself.
Due to the tight budget of the production the entire film had to be shot on low quality filmstock. This often meant that some takes (even the best ones) couldn't be used due to problems with the celluloid being defective. The takes that processed the best were used for the movie. According to Russo this was much to blame for the film's crude style.
The bulk of this movie's cast came from the Pittsburgh Playhouse of Point Park College.
Was released in some theaters as "Backwoods Massacre".
