"Bad Hats" is a movie that is set in World war one. It focuses on two army deserters that have run away from the horrors of the trenches. One is an English Tommy called, "Chappin" and the other is a French soldier called "Rouchon". We firstly see "Rouchon" leaving his trench as his fellow soldiers are going other the top. He runs away and spots "Chappin" in the distance saying goodbye to a French farm girl. "Chappin" runs away from "Rouchon" thinking that he will be arrested. They have a bit of a tussle, until "Chappin" realises that "Rouchon" is also a deserter. As "Chappin is trying to sail to Ireland to escape the horrors of the trenches. "Rouchon" lies that he can sail a boat, so he can tag along with "Chappin". The story follows our two friend's journey. As they face problems and navigational errors. We see a friend ship blossom as they begin to rely on each other and their motto becomes "we do what we want". This motto comes because of the barbarity of the war and constant fear of being captured. They decide that they are going to have fun and not worry until the end. There are many laughs, and these two really do touch you as they carry on like two free little boys hiding in the woods. It is very moving as we see them having running races, tightrope walking and enjoying their peculiar existence. If you like anti war movies this is definitely, a movie that shows the tragedy of a young generation that had to suffer a horrifying existence.
