So let’s get it out there for people that might not know who Buddy Guy is. Most people now without a shadow of a doubt who Jimi Hendrix is. He’s the guy that set the world on fire with Purple Haze and All Along the Watchtower and many other great hits. But Buddy Guy is the person that inspired Hendrix and a slew of other performers that came along after him. In celebration of the success of his acclaimed drama “Moonlight,” Barry Jenkins has released an extended chopped-and-screwed soundtrack that includes a total of 26 remixed songs from the film, including Beyonce and Jay-z’s “Shining,” Aretha Franklin’s “One Step Ahead,” Goodie Mob’s “Cell Therapy” and a version of “Purple Haze” featuring Lloyd.
To create the mix, the filmmaker worked with Og Ron C and the Chopstars, who gave the tracks their chopped-and-screwed treatment. It’s a remixing style created by Houston’s DJ Screw in the 90’s — the sound is accomplished by slowing the tempo of the music down. The album was produced by DJ Candlestick and DJ Slim K.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer was either confused or simply reminiscing about 4/20 when he mistakenly referred to Prince’s “Purple Rain” as “Purple Haze” following the music legend’s tragic death. “All of us, of course, remember ‘Purple Haze’ and what that did for the world of music,” Blitzer said. Blitzer clearly mixed up Prince’s album with the Jimi Hendrix hit “Purple Haze,” but even a harmless mix-up will cause ridicule on social media these days. How does a composer create musical voices for a population of yellow creatures who speak their own language? If you’re Grammy Award-winning musician/composer/songwriter Heitor Pereira, it’s one groovy journey.
Playing in theaters now, Minions begins at the dawn of time. Starting as single-celled yellow organisms, Minions evolve through the ages, perpetually serving the most despicable of masters. Continuously unsuccessful at keeping these masters—from T. rex to Napoleon—the Minions find themselves without someone to serve and fall into a deep depression.
But one Minion named Kevin has a plan, and he – alongside teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob – ventures out into the world to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow.
The trio embarks upon a thrilling journey that ultimately leads them to their next potential master, Scarlet Overkill (Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock), the world’s first-ever female super-villain.

‘Scuse them while they sue this guy? A company owned and operated by the family of Jimi Hendrix is suing a former family member over the alleged theft of one of the late rock icon’s guitars, according to court documents obtained by TheWrap. The suit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday by Experience Hendrix LLC, which according to the filing “runs the merchandise, music licensing and catalogue management (among other things)” of the late “Purple Haze” musician. Experience Hendrix claims that the ex-husband of Hendrix’s sister made off with a Black Widow guitar and attempted to sell it at auction.

Paul Greengrass' long in gestation biopic about rock Jimi Hendrix seems to be picking up steam again at Legendary Pictures.
Four years ago the filmmaker attempted to go forward on the film, but backed off when he did not receive the co-operation of the estate of the late musician.
That patience has now paid off with Legendary and Experience Hendrix coming to an agreement that will see the film become what aims to be the officially sanctioned film about the psychedelically dressed guitar virtuoso and rock icon who died at just 27 in 1970.
With that co-operation, Hendrix's best known tunes like Purple Haze and Foxy Lady will now be used as part of the film.
Scott Silver ("8 Mile," "The Fighter") has been set to write the script and negotiations are in various stages for Greengrass to direct and Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Janie Hendrix, John McDermott, and Peter Afterman to...

Jimi Hendrix is proving popular for the big screen lately. Last year brought with it John Ridley's "Jimi: All Is By My Side" with Spirit Award nominee Andre Benjamin in the starring role. Now comes word that Legendary Pictures will finally move ahead on developing a biopic about the musician with "Captain Phillips" helmer Paul Greengrass set to direct. I say finally because Greengrass and Legendary's Thomas Tull had a shot at making a Hendrix film four years ago, but like Ridley's film, it would have been without the Hendrix estate's cooperation. Now, reportedly, a deal has been struck, and the two parties will set out to produce the definitive cinematic portrait of the rock icon. With estate cooperation comes permission to use all the classics: "Purple Haze," "Voodoo Chile," "Foxy Lady," etc. And perhaps they'll be incorporated in interesting, rather than "greatest hits" ways. After all, "8 Mile" screenwriter...

Another day, another braless look. Rihanna went out for dinner Tuesday night at Santa Monica's hotspot Giorgio Baldi and opted for a rather risqué look. No, we're not talking about her new red tresses (although that's a bold look in it of itself), but instead her white, spaghetti-strapped tank top sans bra! Although concealed by her relatively sheer top, RiRi's nipples could be seen through her shirt. That's definitely a brave look for dinner. But the "We Found Love" singer has been making some bold statements as of late, including wearing purple lipstick to Coachella. The product, which is called Purple Haze from the brand Free Spirit, which is owned by her gal-pal, sold out...

Forget punchy pink and red lipsticks for spring—Rihanna's got a thing for neon violet. The singer posted a stream of snaps to Instagram with her new favorite lip color, and you better believe the vibrant gloss sold out in a snap after RiRi's rave review. The lipstain, by the way, is called Purple Haze from the brand Free Spirit, which is owned by Rihanna's friend Leandra. The bold purple hue actually looks really, really good on Rihanna, and striking in contrast to her new red locks. Yep—that Rihanna's been sporting? Not a wig, like we wondered when we first saw the star filming a music video with a mass of coppery curls. (Also in the recent redhead club? Amy Poehler, who debuted a new...

On this week’s Hump Day with Adam Lambert, Adam’s former record label makes a controversial decision.
The big Adam news this week is the announcement that Adam’s former label will release The Very Best Of Adam Lambert on May 27th. It will include the American Idol performances “Mad World,” “One,” and “Tracks My Tears,” the Glee contribution “Marry The Night,” his soundtrack offering “Time For Miracles,” and a collection of songs from his studio albums.
“If some of these tracks feel like musical mission statements, it’s in their skillful fusion of mainstream pop and rock with left-of-center, if not underground, musician and pop-cultural markers, and their clear conviction towards that mission,” reads the album’s liner notes. “And if that’s not the hallmark of an artist who’s unfailingly true to himself… well, you are invited to listen to some more until you get it.

In his directorial feature debut Jimi: All Is By My Side, John Ridley attempts the seemingly impossible. By zeroing in on the year before guitar giant Jimi Hendrix (played with grace by Outkast’s Andre Benjamin) skyrocketed into fame, Ridley — who just won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for 12 Years a Slave — tells the man’s story without the aid of his legendary music. (Hendrix’s estate refused, like it did with past directors such as Paul Greengrass and the Hughes brothers, to grant rights to the music.) Asked how Ridley will battle the reflexive disappointment Hendrix fans might feel...

I’ve heard it said that somewhere between science and superstition, there is another world. A world of darkness.
It’s a world that haunted my dreams as a child, from the first time I saw Kevin Sullivan and his Army of Darkness spreading their eerily twisted messages across the Nwa.
“Our cause is not for evil,” said Sullivan during an interview for Championship Wrestling from Florida in 1982. “Because all we’re looking for is refuge from this cold, cruel world.”
Ring a bell?
Sullivan’s dark mystique, his messianic charisma, his penchant for dark riddles — they all seem to have been resurrected in the form of Bray Wyatt.
Take, for instance, these words recently delivered by the leader of the Wyatt Family to nemesis John Cena:
“This is a terrible world,” Wyatt drawled. “A cold, cold dark and lonely place. You stand for these illusions. But...

The fun of watching a week's worth of new movies that almost no one has seen is the unknown -- you're not sure which ones will be great, which ones will move you to tears, or which ones will make you get up and walk out of the theater.
In other words, going into this year's Toronto International Film Festival, I expected the same thing I always do at events like these: to see a few good movies, one-to-two outstanding ones, a couple of hidden gems, and a whole lotta' duds. After returning from Canada last Wednesday, I am happy to admit that I was wrong.
Of the 20 films I saw at Tiff this year, two of them were bad, one was downright weird, two more were so-so, and the other 15 (15!) were spectacular. This is a phenomenal track record for a film festival, even one as distinguished as Toronto's.

I’m a sucker for biopics and always have been, but I understand why they’re often thought of as a second-rate form. In a sense, each one is trying to tell two stories at once: the chronicle of its subject’s artistic or political or whatever other worldly achievement (the thing that made us hungry to see a biopic about him or her in the first place), and, at the same time, the private, tumultuous “human drama” of it all. Given that these two dimensions can’t really be separated, and that you have to cram both of them into two hours,...

News like this shouldn't surprise anyone at all at this point, given how often biopics have been protested, whether by family or other influential figures in the subject's life. The project was previously "disowned" by the Jimi Hendrix Estate, who stated that the filmmakers didn't have their approval to tell Hendrix's story, nor use any of the musician's original songs, in the film. The film will be free of all Hendrix-written classics like Purple Haze or The Wind Cries Mary, because of these rights issues, and the producers actually set the film in "Hendrix's pre-fame era," as they said, and the music used will be covers of other musicians' songs...

Imagining the year in which a sideman named Jimmy Hendrix turned into a star called Jimi, John Ridley's All Is By My Side is an oblique, offstage rock portrait, withholding many of the pleasures we expect from biopics in favor of a sometimes dreamy look at an inchoate artistic persona. One of the pleasures withheld is the sight of Hendrix playing "Hey Joe" or "Purple Haze," songs that marked his entry into the UK music scene. For that reason and others, the film isn't as commercial as one might expect for a project about one of the Sixties' most

Misheard song lyrics are the stuff of legend, with Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" being a canonical example of what happens when inflection doesn't go as planned (no, it's not "hold me closer, Tony Danza"). Spotify tried to lend a touch of science to our collective inability to hear certain lines as musicians intended them, and conducted a poll to identify the most misquoted song lyrics of all time.
Coming in at No. 1 on the list is Manfred Mann's Earth Band, who's "Blinded By the Light" is often mistaken as including the line "wrapped up like a douche when you're rollin' in the night." The actual line? "Blinded by the light, revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night."
Take a look at the Spotify's Top 10 Misquoted Song Lyrics below and stream a playlist of the mistakenly catchy tracks. What lyrics do you struggle with the most?
1. Blinded by the light.

It’s a club that the famous are dying to get into, literally. The 27 Club (The Forever 27 Club) is the name for an iconic group of influential musicians who all died at the age of 27. Their untimely deaths have often been connected with uneasy lives and psychological issues, with a lot of physical neglect in between, usually due to drink or drug abuse, or both. An independently published book named, “The 27s: The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll” meticulously details the phenomenon. The author states, “More rock stars have died at 27 than at any other age.”
Bluesman Robert Johnson, who died on August 16, 1938, was an immense musician. His talent was unquestionable; he has been cited – by Eric Clapton, no less – as “the most important blues singer that ever lived”. Johnson’s untimely death wasn’t self-inflicted, and there are a number of conflicting opinions, but the general consensus is...

Heavy Metal is a broad term and a very broad church: there are umpteen variations on its basic theme and there are sub genres galore. However, the single thread which binds these disparate pieces is a loud, overdriven, distorted guitar wielded with intent. Non fans traditionally are quick to dismiss the music as entirely without merit and at this point I’ll say hello to Jason Isaacs who recently described the peerless Lamb Of God as, “People having some kind of epileptic fit in charge of a guitar.” Of course, the perpetual allure of Heavy Metal is that outsiders, such as Mr Isaacs, just don’t get it and for this reason it remains a consistently popular form of music, constantly shifting its shape to adapt to the times whilst managing to maintain its core appeal of rebellion.
Despite its foremost protagonists being American, heavy metal is essentially a British creation.

Today is the birthday of electric guitar hero, James Marshall Hendrix. The "Purple Haze" creator would turn 70 years old if were still alive today, and this fact is blowing our minds.
On the anniversary of his birth, Jimi Hendrix's hometown of Seattle is celebrating the legendary musician in an exhibit at Emp Museum titled, "Hear My Train A Comin': Hendrix Hits London." Devoted entirely to the guitarist's nine month stint in the UK capital, the collection of lyrics, instruments, photographs and fashion covers Hendrix's 1960s British debut. The period, packed with three unforgettable singles and a magnificently successful album, amounted to the perfect prelude to Hendrix's fiery performance at the '67 Monterey Pop Festival.
The exhibit is a wild survey of the psychedelic icon's trip across the pond and subsequent rise to international fame, featuring everything from his wide-brimmed purple-tinged hats to the remains of his battered guitars. Handwritten...

How's this for a flashback? André 3000 (aka André Benjamin) was spotted for the first time channeling Jimi Hendrix as he began shooting the upcoming biopic All Is by My Side in Dublin, Ireland over the weekend. Decked out in full costume and sporting that infamous 'do, the Outkast member bore a striking resemblance to the music icon. However, whether or not we'll actually get to hear André belt out such classic Hendrix tunes as "Purple Haze" and "All Along the Watchtower" remains to be seen. The late guitarist's estate has publicly denied the filmmakers' requests to use any of the late legend's songs in the project, per MTV...

Leave it Willie Nelson to proclaim "Roll me up and smoke me when I die" at the start of his latest track, "Roll Me Up," featuring famous stoner Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson and Jamey Johnson. Nelson conveniently released the song on 4/20, the unofficial marijuana holiday.
O.G. stoner Nelson croons along with Snoop on the country track, which features the West Coast rapper using his twangy voice. "Call my friends and tell them there's a party, come on by," he sings, "Just roll me up and smoke me when I die."
For an extra gimmicky kick, fans can head on over to Willie Nelson's website to listen to the track and watch a digital blunt burn out.
Snoop and Nelson aren't the only ones to have mastered the art of crafting the perfect 4/20 song. Jimi Hendrix released "Purple Haze," every stoner's go-to track, in 1967, and nearly 10 years later, in...

The NFL star and his professional partner Peta Murgatroyd wowed the judges during rock week, with their paso doble to Jimi Hendrix's 'Purple Haze' - which saw the sportsman dance topless - earning a total of 27 points. Judge Bruno Tonioli said: 'Muscular. Masculine. Magnificent!' Carrie Ann Inaba described the routine as 'raunchy and spectacular,' while Len Goodman teased: 'After the show, we'll compare tattoos.' London, Nov 24: Jimi Hendrix has been voted as the greatest guitar player of all time in a poll conducted by Rolling Stone magazine.
Four British guitarists were placed in the top five, with Eric Clapton as the runner-up.
Grammy-winning Tom Morello was among those who voted, nominating key Hendrix tracks 'Purple Haze' and 'The Star-Spangled Banner'.
"Jimi Hendrix exploded our idea of what rock music could be: He manipulated the guitar, the whammy bar, the studio and the stage," the Daily Mail quoted Morello as saying.
Hendrix was able to manipulate his instrument like nobody before or since then, but.

In special honor of the currently-ongoing celebration of the rock and roll documentary that is the Don’t Knock the Rock festival, Randy’s targeted his viticulturally-inclined movie love on Woodstock.
So listen up as Randy imbibes the classic rock doc. Then tells you what to imbibe while doing the same.
Yeah, I know – wine isn’t exactly the mood modifier that comes to mind when thinking of “Woodstock.” That’s not to say it doesn’t fit, but other, stronger, more mind-liberating substances always seem to be the accompaniment of choice for this film – or so I hear. Like those who attended the Woodstock festival, viewers often prefer to feed their heads, not their palates.
Whatever you choose to serve at your viewing party, just make sure you have lots of it. In case you don’t remember – and I hear that happens, too – the film is a smorgasbord...

First, the guy from The Eagles gets into it with Chris Matthews, and now this. Maybe he was in a Purple Haze, but White House Press Secretary Jay Carney kicked off Wednesday's briefing by announcing that President Obama had spoken about the debt ceiling negotiations with several Congressional leaders, and...Mitch Mitchell. Carney quickly corrected himself, to laughs from reporters, and reminded them that Mitch Mitchell was not only the name of The Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer, but also a guitarist in Guided By Voices.

Gary Sinise has played Det. Mac Taylor on CSI: New York for seven seasons. He co-founded the esteemed Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago when he was only 18 years old, directed and starred in a sterling cinematic adaptation of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, and played larger-than-life politicians Harry Truman and George Wallace in award-winning television movies. But chances are, you know him first and last as Lieutenant Dan. His Oscar-nominated role as a disabled and angry Vietnam War veteran in 1994’s Forrest Gump resonated with audiences, and when he began visiting soldiers with the Uso, everyone recognized him immediately as that character.

The enigma of birthday boy Ed Westwick‘s off-the-set wardrobe choices resurfaces again and again in the shadow of hailed Gossip Girl fashion limelight. Let loose from the confines of Chuck Bass suit-dom, Mr. Westwick opts for deep, nearly belly-button baring V-necks and continues to be relentless with plaids we’ve never seen on a Scottish bagpiper. Poor Blair Waldorf is cringing. While it’d seemingly be a good idea for Ed to take a cue from his more polished Gossip Girl character, his new-found affinity for ascots may prove otherwise.

Hollywood is based on a star system, launching actors to leading men status and then hitching scripts and hopes to their tails. It's how movies get made and box offices won, the releases and cash counting so often refreshing with the rise of a new "next big thing."
Then, there are the fixed lights in the sky, more their own stellar systems, with legends and memories and all-time classics spinning in their orbit, their gravitational pull supporting the weight of generations of admirers.
In the Hollywood as outer space analogy (which seems oddly appropriate), Morgan Freeman is the red giant, the luminous giant star deep into its light-giving career. An Academy Award winner ("Million Dollar Baby") and five time nominee ("Street Smart," "Driving Miss Daisy," "The Shawshank Redemption," "Invictus"), he's proven one of the greatest actors of the modern era, tackling race, hatred, love and humor with a certain genteel grace that is inimitable.

In January 2010, I went to interview the musical trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy at their Mumbai studio, Purple Haze. They had to step out of a music session for the interview, leaving the director a little agitated. Mike Fleming is reporting that the estate of late rocker Jimi Hendrix has turned down a promising pitch for a Paul Greengrass directed biopic of the American Icon that would have starred Hurt Locker actor Anthony Mackie in the title role.
The rejected package, which included financial clout from Legendary Pictures and a commitment from the talent to film next year, was turned down because the family estate feared a high-profile film might hurt back catalogue sales. (If you believe that, you’ll believe anything).
The movie is the latest in a long line of potential Hendrix biopics (Will Smith & Eddie Murphy have previously tried, among others) that have been snuffed out by Experience Hendrix, an estate that heavily protects the singer’s memory and the four influential albums he made in his short but productive 27 years of life.

HollywoodNews.com: Adam Lambert may not have been invited to the American Music Awards, but his E! True Hollywood Story did just well on its own. While the pop star is currently over seas tearing up the stage every night, it seems as if he’s also enjoying their way of life as well.
At his recent show in Amsterdam, Lambert lit up on stage what appeared to be a joint, and then proceeded to kiss his guitarist Tommy Joe Ratliff (no shocker here). Don’t put it past Lambert to use the resources he’s got to create the ultimate experience for his “Purple Haze” cover. No complaints around, joint or no joint, no one can deny that his unpredictable actions are what makes his live show so entertaining, always waiting for….what will he do next?

When in Amsterdam, eh, Adam Lambert? The American Idol favorite was literally smoking during his concert at the Paradiso in Amsterdam on Saturday, taking a few hearty puffs off of what looked suspiciously like a marijuana cigarette during his rendition of the Jimi Hendrix classic "Purple Haze." (Don't worry, though; weed is like, totally cool with the cops over there, and in fact might even be mandatory in some areas.) At another point during the song, Lambo occupied his lips by laying a wet one on his guitarist Tommy Joe Ratliff after deliberately misinterpreting the "Purple Haze" line "'Scuze me while I...
