Michelle Pfeiffer Retrospective. Episode 8
by Nathaniel R
We've mostly focused on Michelle Pfeiffer's acting in our Pfandom retrospective. We're sure the star who has described herself as "extremely private" would like it that way, but this would be the appropriate time for a brief bit of personal context.
Though the young actress had been working nonstop since the late 70s in television roles and a few features, she'd been struggling offscreen. She was impatient with the way her career was developing. She'd also become involved with a cult, an experience she's always been cagey about in interviews. She had given them too much of her money and was eating strangely at their insistence. In 1981, she took back control of her life.

Only one marriage seems to be going strong when “Reign” returns for its second season on The CW this fall, and it’s not Francis (Toby Regbo) and Mary’s (Adelaide Kane), who we last saw with a wall literally going up between them as he raced off to see his child be born and she locked him out of their castle due to an impending plague. Judging by the first trailer released today at the San Diego Comic Con, the plague is the Big Bad of season 2, affecting everyone, but particularly Bash (Torrance Coombs), who seems to be directly infected [...]

Marc takes Jennifer to task for her work ethic, even though she put her career on hold to support his. Is he being a hypocrite?
Jennifer Lopez does her best to say nothing negative abut ex Marc Anthony in her new Vanity Fair profile, but Marc does not manage to do the same! When asked about her work ethic Marc says, “She could enjoy life a little more. There are only a certain amount of hours in every day.” Ouch!
It is not all bad however, with Marc admitting that Jennifer has taught him all about discipline. He tells the mag, “now I get up at six in the morning, film Hawthorne, score the show, and I make my meetings.”
Marc also recounts when the pair first met in 1998 and Marc’s first line was, “You’re my wife and you don’t even two it.” Two marriages and two more tabloid relationships later,...

Two marriages fall apart—one in real time, one remembered—over the course of How To Read The Air, Dinaw Mengestu’s sad, disturbing second novel. Drawing on his experience as the son of Ethiopian immigrants, Mengestu follows the lead of his observant but passive protagonist Jonas Woldemariam, examining his parents’ lives as a mode of disengaging from his own. Yosef and Mariam Woldemariam quickly fell in love over a café table in Addis Ababa before Yosef decided, with the help of a mysterious, well-connected benefactor named Abrahim, to leave for America. His ordeal, in which hunger and incomprehension followed ...
