Danish filmmaker Mads Brügger, who won a Sundance best director award for “Cold Case Hammarskjöld,” expected a bigger fallout following the release of his latest film, “The Mole: Undercover in North Korea,” he admitted during his CineLink Talk at Sarajevo Film Festival.
His documentary, focusing on two men embarking on a mission to expose the secrets of the Korean Friendship Association (Kfa) and its Spanish president, is shown at the festival in the Dealing with the Past section, alongside his previous efforts “The Ambassador,” an investigation of the blood diamond trade in Africa, and “Cold Case Hammarskjöld,” about the mysterious death of the secretary general of the United Nations.
“I thought it would lead to the arrest of Alejandro Cao de Benós, but nothing has happened. All of this made me contemplate that maybe he is a double agent himself,” said Brügger, teasing a possible continuation of the larger-than-life saga...

This year’s 38th Jerusalem Film Festival will host a tribute to iconic Israeli company Cannon Films and producers Yoram Globus and Menachem Golan, curated in collaboration with Quentin Tarantino. The Cannon Film Group produced and distributed films from 1967 to 1993. Along the way Cannon became one of the world’s leading independent production companies.
Jerusalem’s tribute will include eight films produced by the company, presented in 35mm. On Aug. 26, Tarantino will head a panel discussion about the history of Cannon Films ahead of screenings of “The Ambassador” (1984) and a double feature of “Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects” (1989) and “The Naked Cage” (1986). Other titles screening in the program include “The Delta Force” (1986), “Death Wish 4” (1987) and “10 to Midnight” (1983).

Rock Hudson and George Peppard are WWII commandos in “Tobruk,” available on Blu-ray by Kino Lorber. Hudson is Major Donald Craig, a Canadian prisoner of war on board a German transport ship anchored off an Italian controlled port in North Africa sometime in late 1942. A group of frogmen surface near the ship and sneak on board with silencers fixed to their guns in order to kidnap Craig. The frogmen are led by Captain Bergman (George Peppard) who is part of a team of German commandos. They take Craig to a German airfield and fly him to a desert landing strip. They’re unexpectedly greeted by a group of British soldiers led by Colonel Harker (Nigel Green). It turns out Bergman is the leader of German Jews who fled Nazi Germany for obvious reasons and are now part of...

Fox has given a script commitment with penalty to an hourlong female-centric Texas Rangers drama from writer Matt Cook, former Empire showrunner Ilene Chaiken and 20th Century Fox TV.
Written by Cook, the untitled Female Texas Ranger project centers on Lauren Crawford Flynn, one of only two females in the legendary and notoriously tough Texas Rangers, who balances the demands of her intense, high stakes job in a male dominated world with the challenges of being a single mom to a young teenage daughter.
Cook executive produces with Chaiken. 20th Century Fox TV, where Chaiken is under an overall deal, is the studio.
The project reflects the inroads women have made at the Texas Rangers. The nearly 200-year-old law enforcement agency named its first female lieutenant in 2014.
A male Texas Ranger was at the center of a popular, long-running series, CBS’ Walker, Texas Ranger.
This is the second project Chaiken has sold this cycle.

Director and documentarian Mark Hartley scores both a film history and comedy success with this ‘wild, untold’ account of the 1980s film studio that was both revered and despised by everyone who had contact with it. The ‘cast list’ of interviewees is encyclopedic, everybody has a strong opinion, and some of them don’t need four-letter words to describe their experience!

Smack dab in the middle of his fourth decade as a filmmaker, auteur John Frankenheimer would release what would stand as one of his last notable titles with 52 Pick-Up in 1986. The 80s were not really kind to the veteran director, having knocked out one of his silliest titles in 1979 with the environmental horror film Prophecy prior to helming some other oddities, like the Scott Glenn/Toshiro Mifune film The Challenge (1982), the Michael Caine thriller The Holcraft Experiment (1985) and then Dead Bang (1989) with Don Johnson. But it would be his adaptation of this Elmore Leonard novel, a black mail neo noir that really stands out amongst his later works.
Harry Mitchell (Roy Scheider) is a Los Angeles entrepreneur. He’s got a great life, lots of money, a beautiful wife (Ann-Margret) about to enter into the political arena, and a sprawling home. But when three criminals led by pornographer Alan Raimy...

Elmore Leonard knew how to start a story. My first Leonard novel was Glitz. I opened the paperback on a whim in the college bookstore where I worked as a clerk. It started, "The night Vincent was shot he saw it coming." Forty-five minutes later, my boss poked me in the shoulder and said, "Get back to work." That's how you do it.Leonard died at 87, not long after suffering a stroke. He was spare, direct, and funny. He didn't waste your time or his. "I leave out the parts people skip," he said. Leonard was prolific: 46 books, seven screenplays, two teleplays. He was catnip to TV and film producers looking for material; nearly two dozen of his novels and short stories became movies or shows, including Justified, Get Shorty, Be Cool, 52 Pick-Up (also adapted as The Ambassador), Mr. Majestyk, Hombre, The Tall T, Jackie Brown, 3:10 to...

Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...
