This was the final performance of Peter Cushing as the immortal sleuth Sherlock Holmes. An aging Sherlock Holmes, of course, because Peter Cushing was also already in his seventies by then. Ably assisted by an aging Dr. Watson, played by sir John Mills... Arthur Conan Doyle never concocted this story, it was purely invented as a TV-movie. By a British movie company, directed by Roy Ward Baker, assisted by Freddie Francis, and with performing aide by aging Ann Baxter, Anton Diffring, Ray Milland etc. There is something about this movie... made by old people, performed by old people, and focusing on an already aging audience, i guess ? Never mind, all the principal actors still proved they were capable of doing their job and a bit more. The overall sensation one feels when watching this movie is one of memories... Memories when the principal actors where still relatively young and seem to made another movie every month... All that besides, its still a movie worth seeing: the story is good (although not breathtaking), the acting is excellent, the direction and photography is worthwhile... A perfect testament to many involved... Especially to an era which does not exist anymore and which will never come back again,
