Charlie Linville accomplished a feat few people can claim on Thursday when he successfully summited Mount Everest. Even more miraculously, however, he became the first combat-wounded veteran to reach the 29,029-foot peak, after losing his leg in Afghanistan in 2011. Linville, a Marine Corps veteran from Boise, Idaho, was climbing with Nat Geo’s “Going Wild” host Tim Medvetz, who is also founder of the Heroes Project. Over the weekend, Jake Gyllenhaal's performance in “Everest” helped it to land in the top five box office films, but one viewer was decidedly not impressed in the least.
Jon Krakauer, who survived the ill-fated 1996 expedition to climb Mount Everest and later went on to write a book about it titled “Into Thin Air,” told the Los Angeles times that he has major concerns about the movie adaptation.
Krakauer declared, "It's total bull. Anyone who goes to that movie and wants a fact-based account should read Into Thin Air... People told me, 'Movies never get made. Take the money. What do you have to lose?' I curse myself for selling it (the book rights) at all... Dramatic films take dramatic license, and when you sign a document, you can do whatever you want with me. It wasn't worth the money I got."...

Journalist Jon Krakauer, who was on the catastrophic 1996 climb, derides his portrayal in Jake Gyllenhaal-starring film
Jon Krakauer, the journalist who survived the catastrophic 1996 expedition on Everest that resulted in multiple fatalities, and whose subsequent book Into Thin Air became a bestselling account of it, has criticised the recently released film of the disaster as “total bull”.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, to support the release of Prophet’s Prey, a documentary about religious sect leader Warren Jeffs who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2011 for child sex abuse, Krakauer said of the Baltasar Kormákur-directed Everest: “It’s total bull … Anyone who goes to that movie and wants a fact-based account should read Into Thin Air.”

"Everest" is now in theaters, giving everyone IMAX and 3D enhanced vertigo, at least until "The Walk" opens. And while the mountain climbing drama has earned mix reviews, it has received a scathing notice from someone intimate with the true story tale: author Jon Krakauer, who was on the climb, and recounted the adventure in his book "Into Thin Air." While the movie isn't based on his work, Krakauer is nonetheless displeased with the results, and in particular, how his character (played by Michael Kelly) is portrayed. **Mild Spoilers Ahead** “It’s total bull,” he told The Los Angeles Times. “Anyone who goes to that movie and wants a fact-based account should read ‘Into Thin Air.' " In particular, he's peeved at a scene in the film in which he's asked to help rescue Jason Clarke's Rob Hall, but declines because he's snow blind. “I never had that conversation,...

Into Thin Air author Jon Krakauer isn't a fan of Everest, describing it as "total bull".
And considering Krakauer was actually there during the 1996 Mount Everest disaster on which the film is based, he should know.
Krakauer told The La Times: "It's total bull. Anyone who goes to that movie and wants a fact-based account should read Into Thin Air."
Into the Air tells the story of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, which saw eight climbers killed and several others stranded after a freak storm.
Krakauer's used to movie studios taking dramatic liberties with his work, after previously selling the rights to his book to Sony back in 1997.
Needless to say, he wasn't a fan of the subsequent TV movie.

Baltasar Kormakur.s riveting Everest tells to emotionally gripping and physically laborious story of true-like hikers who braved the elements to ascend Mt. Everest in 1996. with only a few members of the team making it back down to the bottom. One such member who is portrayed in the film is author and reporter Jon Krakauer, who wrote about the expedition in his best-selling book Into Thin Air. Yet, even though Krakauer is a character in the movie (portrayed by Michael Kelly), the man himself has real problems with the film and actually refers to it as "total bull." Jon Krakauer takes particular umbrage with the way that he is portrayed in a very specific scene in the movie. Spoilers for Everest will follow from here on out. Everest
Written by William Nicholson & Simon Beaufoy
Directed by Baltasar Kormákur
UK/USA/Iceland, 2015
The phrase “visually stunning” is used pretty liberally these days, what with a new blockbuster extravaganza arriving nearly every weekend. The new disaster drama, Everest, quite literally takes things to new heights. Director Baltasar Kormákur mixes breathtaking cinematography, dizzying special effects, and pummeling sound to bring the infamous mountain to life. Unfortunately, the script can’t keep pace, as it sidesteps the shortcomings of its characters in order to preserve an emotional denouement. It’s worth an afternoon at the IMAX theater to take in the sights, but don’t expect any new insight into this harrowing ordeal.
In 1996, eight climbers comprising two expedition groups died after being overtaken by a vicious storm atop Mt. Everest. One group, Adventure Consultants, was led by the amiable Kiwi, Rob Hall (Jason Clarke), while the other was helmed by the hard-living American,...

Obviously this is based on the 1996 climbing accident. Shortly after that happened, we had the documentary, Everest, which was directed by David Breashears. We’ve had several other films looking at this incident, particularly documentaries; what’s the advantage of something that’s fictionalised?
First of all, to be able to create the mountain, we need quite a budget. And to be able to shoot high up, and be able to capture the mountain the way we wanted to capture it. I’m not saying they didn’t get shots of the mountain, but that’s a different,...

Baltasar Kormákur’s Everest is not the majestic mountaineering epic you might have expected. Despite the IMAX 3-D promotional gloss, this is a movie that gets down to eye level with its characters — a movie not of expanse but of close-quarters despair. Even when people plummet to their deaths, the film treats it quietly, modestly; the horror is in the no-big-deal-ness. As such, Everest may disappoint those looking for a more awe-inspiring film with big vistas and jaw-dropping stunts and acts of surreal heroism. Unlike many mountain-disaster stories, this is the kind that makes you never want to look at a mountain again.Everest recounts the true-life tragedy in 1996, when a deadly blizzard and other mishaps led to what was then the deadliest day in Mt. Everest’s history. Numerous books and articles have retold the story, including Jon Krakauer’s best-seller Into Thin Air. Those who know the events...

A star-studded cast convened to bring one of history’s great mountaineering disasters to the screen in Everest.
Based on the May 1996 incident in which eight climbers from two different parties lost their lives when the world’s tallest summit was hit by a blizzard, Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur’s (2 Guns) 3D epic features Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke as the experienced, but ultimately overwhelmed, guides of each team. Other climbers and concerned parties are played by Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Keira Knightley, Robin Wright, Sam Worthington, Emily Watson and Michael Kelly — the latter plays Jon Krakauer, whose book Into Thin Air is one of several personal chronicles of the disaster.
Shot in Italy, Britain and Nepal, including at Everest’s South Base Camp when an even deadlier avalanche elsewhere on the mountain took 16 lives in 2014, the film is an epic depiction of nature’s power at its most awesome,...

This is the kind of movie movies were invented for: big, visceral, and intense, a heart-stopping adventure that has you catching your breath and gasping in shock as it takes you places most of us will never get to so as to engage in the sort of life-threatening thrills that, paradoxically, remind us that we are alive. That’s an argument that safety-minded homebodies like me scoff at when risk-takers make it, but Everest makes you understand it deep in your gut.
And this is true even though Everest is the story of what had been the deadliest climbing season on the mountain until the 2014 and 2015 avalanches.

Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur tackles his largest Hollywood project to-date, with this epically staged account of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, in which eight climbers perished on the Himalayan peak in a single day. Featuring a robust ensemble cast and thrilling set pieces, Everest largely avoids the he-said, she-said controversies raised by journalist Jon Krakauer's first-person account, Into Thin Air, instead presenting a diplomatic and stirring tale of Man vs Nature at the top of the world. In May 1996, Outside Magazine writer and amateur mountaineer Jon Krakauer joined an expedition led by New Zealander Rob Hall and his professional outfit Adventure Consultants to scale Mount Everest, the highest point on the planet. Krakauer's aim was to investigate and report on the ballooning commercialisation of summit attempts...

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke lead the cast but the mountain is the star of Everest, a high-altitude thriller that opened the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday.
Based on real events, Baltasar Kormakur's film follows two expeditions caught in a blizzard while attempting to reach the summit in 1996.
Shot in 3-D and on the super-sized IMAX format, the film is a nerve-shredding, life-or-death battle between the mountain and the wind-whipped, snow-blinded, oxygen-deprived climbers. Some live and some die, but as one character notes, "the last word always belongs to the mountain."
"Part of telling the story is telling it in the elements," added Kormakur, who took his cast high into the Himalayas and imported snow to England's Pinewood Studios in his quest for authenticity. "The story happened in the elements."

★★★☆☆ In 1996, Kiwi Rob Hall and his company Adventure Consultants took a team of climbers along with a group of paying clients to Kathmandu with the hope of reaching the summit of the world's highest mountain on 10 May. The disaster that subsequently occurred was recorded in memoirs by several of the survivors, most successfully by professional journalist Jon Krakauer, whose book Into Thin Air became a bestseller and was adapted into a less-than-successful TV movie only a year after the tragedy. Following such startlingly impressive opening films as Gravity and Birdman, Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur's new film Everest (2015) now opens the 72nd Venice Film Festival.

In collecting my impressions about “Everest,” which opened this year’s Venice Film Festival, I started thinking not about other epic adventure movies but about HBO’s “Show Me a Hero,” the recently-completed six-part miniseries about the battle over low-income housing in Yonkers, New York. The two couldn’t be further apart in terms of genre, but both projects are true stories adapted from non-fiction. (Even though Jon Krakauer is a character in “Everest,” this movie isn’t an adaptation of “Into Thin Air”; the credited sources are Beck Weathers’ “Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest” and...

Meru
Directed byJimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi
USA, 2015
There’s a fine line between determination and obsession, and it’s often ambiguous as to where the subjects of Meru, a new documentary about three men’s ambition to climb one of the world’s most treacherous mountains, find themselves. In fact, it often seems as if the men themselves don’t know, nor do their families, and it barely seems to matter: they have their fixations, and they will remain as such regardless of how they’re classified.
The three men are Conrad Anker, Renan Ozturk, and Jimmy Chin (who also co-directed the film with Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi), professional climbers for whom one goal appears to subsume all others: reaching the top of the titular mountain. As they explain in the film’s opening moments, with the aid of writer Jon Krakauer (author of Into Thin Air, a gripping...

The terrible, true story of what was, at the time, the deadliest summit attempt on Mount Everest is now being told in the new film, "Everest," which features an all-star cast and breathtaking special effects.
In the clip below, premiering today exclusively on Moviefone, climber Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal) finally reaches the top of the titular mountain, and the achievement literally takes his breath away.
As Fischer fights for air in the notoriously low-oxygen environment, he chats with fellow climber Rob Hall (Jason Clarke), the leader of another expedition who's also just reached the top.
But while the scene in question is lighthearted -- the pair joke about who among their group has fallen behind, and who will make it to the summit first -- the circumstances that await them are anything but. Standing tall at an eye-watering 8,848 metres above sea level, few environments on planet Earth are as hostile to the average human as that found on Everest. With temperatures fluctuating between -20ºC and -35ºC at the summit, it’s little wonder why the famed mount attracts only the bravest of the brave. In 1996, though, an expedition went awry when two groups of explorers were caught in the throes of a relentless blizzard, and it proved to be one of the worst disasters in the mountain’s long and storied history.
Almost a decade on, that event has inspired the release of Baltasar Kormákur’s title drama, charting the real-life events of the doomed mountaineering exercise. Lifting inspiration from Jon Krakauer’s acclaimed book Into Thin Air along with a variety of interviews and records from the ’96 disaster, Kormákur’s Everest is gunning for a frighteningly realistic portrayal of the climb,...

In 1996, eight climbers lost their lives as they struggled to reach the top of the world's highest peak, Mount Everest. Jon Krakauer told their story in the bestselling book "Into Thin Air," which Baltasar Kormakur ("2 Guns") has turned into the fall release "Everest." (Below, watch the gripping trailer for the 3D IMAX version.) Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke play Scott Fischer and Rob Hall, rivals who lead separate teams of amateur climbers to the top. When an unexpected snowstorm strands them midway, the competitors are forced to come together to save as many of their teams as they can. Among these are people played by past Oscar nominees Josh Brolin and John Hawkes while Sam Worthington is expert Guy Cotter who warns of the perils ahead. And two-time Oscar nominee Keira Knightley is Clarke's partner, anxiously awaiting word back home. -Break- This Universal release was shot on location in Nep.

If you only see one film in 3D IMAX this year, Everest's combination of disaster epic and National Geographic snowscape cinematography is probably the one to don your goggles for. Contraband's Baltasar Kormakur directs Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal, and here's a new IMAX-branded trailer to give a brass monkey pause.Everest's story is of the 1996 events, made famous by Jon Krakauer's book Into Thin Air (already filmed as a TV movie with Christopher McDonald as Krakauer), in which three separate Everest expeditions ran into tragic difficulty in a sudden storm. This version of what happened is drawn from more sources than just Krakauer however, including other books and new interviews with the survivors. 2 Guns and Contraband director Baltasar Kormákur took us behind-the-scenes of his upcoming biographical thriller a couple of weeks ago, detailing the trials and tribulations faced by the cast and crew as they shot on location in Nepal and the Alps. Combining real-world shoots with work in the UK’s famed Pinewood Studios, Everest is gunning for a strikingly realistic depiction of the 1996 mountaineering disaster, which proved to be one of the deadliest years in the mountain’s history.
Over the past two decades or so, the calamitous event has inspired many works of fiction and non-fiction, though Kormákur will primarily be concerned with Jon Krakauer’s best-selling, non-fiction novel Into Thin Air, which Everest draws inspiration from. With such an unflinching commitment to capturing the fear, isolation and near-unbearable environment of the world’s highest peak, the director’s latest almost demands to be seen on the biggest IMAX screen possible,...

Jake Gyllenhaal lost 30 lbs for “Nightcrawler” and ran 15 miles to set every day to the point that he hospitalized himself. For “Southpaw” he put back on the weight, turned half of it into pure lean muscle, and trained for six months working out six days a week. For “Everest,” the epic true story of the 1996 climbing tragedy upon which Jon Krakauer’s “Into Thin Air” was based (Gyllenhaal plays Scott Fischer, the lead guide. You can google the rest?), the actor has pushed his limits yet again. In one scene where he has to suffer hypothermia, Gyllenhaal insisted on mimicking the reality of the snow in the cold to a near debilitating degree. “He almost lost his hearing,” director Baltasar Kormákur told Esquire earlier this year. “His inner ear was frozen. His nostril hairs were frozen. And he wasn’t even getting that well-paid!” Read More: Interview: Jake Gyllenhaal Talks ‘Nightcrawler,...

Who says acting is easy? For director Baltasar Kormakur’s tale of survival on Everest during the mountain’s deadly 1996 climbing season, the cast – including Jake Gyllenhaal, Josh Brolin, Jason Clarke, and John Hawkes – trekked to Nepal to film on-location.
That’s not fake snow, CGI, and green screen in the first trailer for Everest. That’s the real thing. The cast and crew ventured to Nepal to film scenes on the South Base Camp of Everest while dealing with some very real avalanche conditions and severe weather warnings. Kormakur pushed his actors to react to the actual weather conditions including working outdoors in freezing temperatures, making the film feel as real as possible.

Jake Gyllenhaal has really wowed us the last couple of years with the likes of End of Watch, Prisoners, Enemy and Nightcrawler and it would seem he has strong chance of doing that again this year with a trio of films. This summer there's Southpaw, later this year there's Jean-Marc Vallee's Demolition and in-between is the 3D thriller Everest for which the first trailer has just arrived. Set for release on Sept. 18, Everest was inspired by the true events that took place in 1996 and is adapted from Jon Krakauer's best-seller "Into Thin Air". The story centers on two different expeditions setting out to climb Mount Everest only to find themselves challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Directed by Baltasar Kormakur, and shot in Nepal and the Italian Alps, along with Gyllenhaal, the film stars Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Martin Henderson,...

Given the earthquake that happened in Nepal, Universal's "Everest" will seem more relevant than ever. Based on a true-life story, "Everest," which features a star-studded cast, recounts a horrific 1996 tragedy in which eight climbers lost their lives trying to summit the famed Himalayan peak. Details and photos have surfaced of who plays who in the movie. The movie stars Jason Clarke as a climbing guide, and Josh Brolin as his client, as well as Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley and Robin Wright among many others. "There was a cluster [of summiters] on the top," director Baltasar Kormákur told People. "In the end, what happened is that a lot of small things went wrong and waylaid them. People missed their passes, then a big storm hit." (Jon Krakauer's best-seller "Into Thin Air" was about the same events. Suffice it to say given the premise, you’re probably going to see a lot of movie stars die in it.

An avalanche on Mount Everest killed 12 Sherpa guides and injured six others on Friday, which is now being dubbed the deadliest day on the mountain. Four others are reportedly still missing.
12 Die In Mount Everest Avalanche
Fifty individuals, mostly Nepali Sherpas readying the route up Everest for the busiest climbing season of the year, were in the path of the avalanche when it occurred at an altitude of 20,000 feet, according to Nepal Tourism Ministry’s Tilak Ram Pandey, reported CNN. The avalanche occurred right near the Khumba Ice Fall base camp.
All 12 of the deceased were Sherpa guides. All of the climbers, who were on the mountain to grow accustomed to the climate and altitude, have been accounted for, while rescuers continue to search the area for the four missing.
Climbers generally attempt to take the mountain between May 15 and May 30, as that’s believed to be the safest time for the hike.

Sam Worthington and Robin Wright will be taking a break away from the worlds of "Avatar" and "House of Cards" soon to join the ensemble cast of Baltasar Kormákur's "Everest," Deadline reports. The Universal Pictures production is based on Jon Krakauer's best-selling book "Into Thin Air" about 1996 Mount Everest disaster, which claimed the lives of eight people attempting to reach the summit in May of that year. It ended up being the single deadliest year in Everest's history as some 15 people died in similar attempts. Principle photography on the picture started in February. Worthington and Wright will star alongside Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal and John Hawkes as members of two different expeditions. Kormákur is coming off of the successful actioner "2 Guns" but "Everest" seems to hold more in common with his 2012 Best Foreign Language Film shortlister "The Deep," which told a different true story of man against the elements.
