Richard Lowenstein’s Ghost Pictures is collaborating with independent producer Mark Fennessy on a feature documentary on Afl star Dustin Martin and a miniseries based on Billy Thorpe’s first book.
Fennessy acquired the rights to both projects and approached Lowenstein after they worked together on Mystify: Michael Hutchence. Fennessy served as a producer on that film and helped acquire the rights to Inxs’s music.
Both are being developed as co-productions between Fennessy’s production company and Ghost Pictures, in which Lowenstein is partnered with Andrew de Groot and Lynn-Maree Milburn.

Richard Lowenstein takes away the myths, but adds to the legend in his documentary Mystify: Michael Hutchence.
Michael Hutchence, the lead singer of Inxs, appeared to live a life in excess of the flavors of even some of the most hedonistic rock stars. He toured the world, dated pop idols and international models, and explored pleasure in all forms. His death, on Nov. 22, 1997, achieved equally mythic status.
The 37-year-old singer apparently hung himself with his snake skin belt in room 524 of Sydney's Ritz-Carlton hotel. The coroner's report said there was alcohol, cocaine, codeine, Prozac, Valium and prescription benzodiazepines in the artist's blood and urine. Paula Yates, who jilted her rock royalty husband to be with the "elegantly wasted" singer, added to the myth by theorizing Huchence died of autoerotic asphyxiation. Richard Lowenstein's documentary Mystify: Michael Hutchence, which Fathom Events will present in theaters for one night only on Jan.

"He was the complete package..." "And everyone wanted a piece of him." Dogwoof has debuted an official trailer for a music documentary titled Mystify: Michael Hutchence, from Australian filmmaker Richard Lowenstein, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Lowenstein is a director of the majority of both Inxs and Michael's music videos and the 1986 feature film, Dogs in Space, in which Michael played the lead. Inxs was an Australian rock band, formed in 1977 in Sydney, with Hutchence as the lead singer and main lyricist. He sadly passed away in 1997 from a suicide. The feature doc film is about the "troubled heart and soul" of Michael Hutchence of Inxs. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, and played at the Sydney and Karlovy Vary Film Festivals this summer. Looks like another good biopic doc. Here's the official trailer for Richard Lowenstein's doc Mystify: Michael Hutchence, from YouTube...

Inxs frontman’s genius is implied throughout Richard Lowenstein’s choppy documentary but never given the chance to speak for itself
Richard Lowenstein’s long-gestating documentary Mystify: Michael Hutchence has finally arrived after a decade in the works. In a sense, the veteran indie auteur has been chipping away at the film even longer than that, since the early days of his career, having directed several music videos for Inxs – the Australian rock band the renowned singer-songwriter fronted.
Lowenstein also helmed the endearingly scuzzy 1986 sharehouse drama Dogs in Space. This bong water-soaked, couch-crashing classic features a rare leading performance from Hutchence himself, with whom the director was friends. Lowenstein has described Mystify as an apology for not being there for the late musician, who took his own life in a Sydney hotel room in November 1997.

Following their success on "Searching for Sugar Man," Universal Music Group and Passion Pictures are re-teaming to produce a documentary feature about the life of Inxs lead singer Michael Hutchence.
Hutchence's friend and filmmaker Richard Lowenstein ("He Died with a Felafel in His Hand," "Say a Little Prayer") will direct. Lowenstein has reportedly been "working on the definitive documentary film journey into the heart and soul of this complex, shy, poetic and exceptionally charismatic man for many years."
Lowenstein is deeply familiar with the material, directing the majority of Hutchence and Inxs's music videos along with the singer's only lead role in a film - 1986's "Dogs in Space". Hutchence's daughter Tiger Lily will be a beneficiary of the film's proceeds.

Emma-Kate Croghan’s indie flick has the verbal ping pong of a Kevin Smith joint crossed with the good-natured repartee of a Nora Ephron movie
Film history is dotted with stories of immensely talented people who launched their careers with a bang then disappeared from the scene far too quickly. What a shame we haven’t seen more from writer/director Emma-Kate Croghan, who rose to acclaim in the 90s and has made only two feature films: 1999’s Strange Planet (with Claudia Karvan and Naomi Watts) and 1996’s Love and Other Catastrophes.

Any list of must-watch films is likely to be so arbitrary and subjective that it buys plenty of arguments, and so it proves with the Taste of Cinema website.s compilation on Australian cinema.
Its selection of 20 Essential Australian Films You Need To Watch overlooks many classics and more than a few stand-outs of the past 30 years.
Writer Liam Clark, a film/literature/music student in Sydney, acknowledges the first-ever feature length film was The Story Of The Kelly Gang in 1906. He then observes, .Since then, antipodean auteurs of the screen have been weaving their imagerial visions into challenging portraits of Outback Australia, racism, crime and hauntingly beautiful stories..
The list omits everything produced before 1971 and there are some questionable choices.
His Essential 20: Strictly Ballroom (1992), Sweetie (1989), Mad Max (1979), Gallipoli (1981), Muriel.s Wedding (1994), Lantana (2001), Snowtown (2011), The Dish (2000), Candy (2006), Dogs in Space (1986), Somersault (2004), Shine (1986), The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the...

Musical biopics are popping up all over the place with several announced over the holiday weekend.
First up, Fox Searchlight has acquired the life rights to "Britain’s Got Talent" sensation Susan Boyle along with the rights to the UK musical "I Dreamed A Dream" based on her story.
The plan is to reportedly combine the two to develop a re-imagined filmed version of the musical. No director or screenwriter has been attached as yet.
Then there's word that rocker Lenny Kravitz has emerged as director Julien Temple’s choice to play singer Marvin Gaye in a new biopic set towards the end of Gaye's life.
Having fled to London and hopelessly addicted to drugs and alcohol, music promoter Freddy Couseart took Gaye to his flat in Belgium and sorted him out. The result was the album 'Midnight Love' which featured the iconic single "Sexual Healing".

Michael Hutchence
The story of Inxs front man Michael Hutchence is set to be turned into a film, Two Worlds Colliding.
Just a Man – The Real Michael Hutchence, a book by the singer’s sister Tina Hutchence and his mother Patricia Glassop, is a look into the singer’s career as well as private life until his death in a Sydney hotel room in 1997.
The book has been acquired by Trevor Ray Field who, along with Suzy Marovski with Robert Galinsky, executive producing. Galinsky will also write the screenplay.
Galinsky told Encore: “I chased the idea 12 years ago but there was so much litigation and family issues, it looked too harsh. But recently I was made aware of Trevor Ray Field who was good friends of Tina Hutchence and he brought me the book. Over the course of the last month we negotiated the rights with Tina and we hit the mark.

Below you will find a list of movie that Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright has never seen. Not long ago Wright went out and asked his friends and fans to recommend some movies they thought he may have missed over the last thirty years of his life. He got recommendations from Quentin Tarantino, Daniel Waters, Bill Hader, John Landis, Guillermo Del Toro, Joe Dante, Judd Apatow, Joss Whedon, Greg Mottola, Schwartzman, Doug Benson, Rian Johnson, Larry Karaszeski, Josh Olson, Harry Knowles and hundreds of fans on this blog.
From these recommendations, Wright created a master list of recommended films that were frequently mentioned. The director now wants the fans to choose which of the films on the list he should watch on the big screen.
Wright is holding a film event at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles called Films Edgar Has Never Seen.

Edgar Wright's latest epic project [1] has him partnering with Quentin Tarantino, Judd Apatow, Joss Whedon, Bill Hader, Guillermo Del Toro, Joe Dante, Greg Mottola, Harry Knowles, Rian Johnson and, probably, several of you. Like all of us, Wright has a bunch of classic and cult films he's never seen. Unlike all of us, he has the means to see them for the first time on the big screen and will do just that in December [2] at the New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles during Films Edgar Has Never Seen. The director of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World asked both his famous friends (some of which are listed above) and fans to send in their personal must see lists and, from those titles, Wright came up with one mega list from which he'll pick a few movies to watch December 9-16. After the jump check...

Screen Australia today announced a round of development funding for eight feature films.
Included in the funding is Bruce Beresford’s Banjo & Matilda, as well as films by directors Adam Elliot, Nadia Tess, Eddie Martin and Richard Lowenstein, and investment in writers Alice Addison, Mark Herman and Glenda Hambly.
Banjo & Matilda is the dramatisation of Banjo Paterson’s Waltzing Matilda. Set in 1895, a young city poet and journalist travels to a remote sheep station to track down a political agitator. When the clashes between union shearers and landowners turn to violence, a man is found dead in a billabong. Was it suicide or murder? The film will be produced by Bill Leimbach (Beneath Hill 60, Bait 3D) and written by David Roach.
Adam Elliot (Mary & Max) will write and direct Ernee, an animated adventure romance, produced by Peter Kaufmann and executive produced by Brian Rosen and Bryce Menzies.
Two musical biopics were also funded.

A reminder that "human rights" is a universal issue rather than an empty poltical buzz word, with 28 searing films from around the world. Like Anthony Lapaglia's star turn in The Balibo Conspiracy, a gripping fictionalisation of the disappearance of five Australian TV journalists during the East Timor invasion of 1975, the truth of which lay undiscovered for over 30 years. Or the timely Moloch Tropical, a film from Haitian minister of culture-turned-auteur, Raoul Peck imagining the mental unravelling of the country's prime minister. Other highlights include Iranian artist Shirin Neshat's intimate Women Without Men, and Red Chapel, which finds comedy in North Korea.

There's little to galvanise this year's crop (over 75 films and documentaries), besides tragedy, love, religion, schooldays and nestling together under a big rainbow-coloured umbrella.
