I was involved with making this movie...
EEDude16 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
That's right... back in 87 I was in a rock band called Lights Out. Some friends of mine were making a movie and needed a band to help with the bar scenes. OK... so we move all the equipment, set up, play a few tunes...only later to find that the audio equipment failed and our music was not recorded. An amazing and lucky break! (At least we got a credit at the end of the film) But seriously, I observed the process of making this movie, and you have to admire the sheer "stick-to-iteveness" (is that a word?) of these guys to make a movie with absolutely no budget. I would say that the movie has a certain charm to it... but I am clearly biased. Some of the stuff they did, from a special effects standpoint, is pretty good... especially considering the money limitation.

The other surprising thing to me is that at least 17 people have seen this movie. (As of this writing, there are 17 reviews posted). To me, this movie is almost like a performance piece. That is... the act of creation is where the artistic part lives.... the movie itself is a by-product of the art. An artifact really. (It's sort of like the ashes left behind after someone walks across burning coals).

You have to encourage this kind of creative effort. (I Think...?)

Fun low-budget gore slasher.
HumanoidOfFlesh4 August 2008
In "Killing Spree" an airplane mechanic becomes so convinced that his wife is as unfaithful to him that he launches an inventive and elaborate campaign to dispatch her numerous lovers,in the most violent, gory and repulsive ways imaginable. The bloody effects rank from pretty good to awful, but if you are a rabid gore fan you will love "Killing Spree".The gore is plentiful including the scene, where our hero rips open a man's belly with chainsaw and then electrocutes him through his exposed intestines.A couple of the kills are hilariously ludicrous and the scene in which the wife 'gives head' to her husband's best friend is unlike any horror film moment you've ever seen. The acting is unfirmly awful and the editing is bad,but if you enjoy watching low-budget gore flicks grab some beer and give "Killing Spree" a try.

Ultra Low Budget Cheese--But Fun!
FrightMeter15 March 2002
I know that many people will/have automatically given this film a rating of 1, just because it doesn't have the huge budget and top-of-the-line special effects that they are used to. I, however, knew what I was getting myself into when I popped this into the VCR.

I don't think we get much more low-budget that this, unless we are filming a family reunion. The lighting is awful, sound quality is at times incomprehensible, and the acting is ultra-bad by almost all involved. BUT, this is still a fun movie and the plot is interesting enough. It centers around a fellow named Tom Russo (Asbestos Felt), who has been down on his luck with his job. He is very protective of his wife and does not allow her to work, putting even more pressure on himself. As he begins working more hours, we see him slowly transcend into madness and obsession and he becomes suspicious that his wife cheating on him and begins to brutally murder the various men (most repair guys) that he feels are responsible.

I must say that the gore effects are extremely cheap, but fit with the overall tone of the film.. The brutal ways that Tom Russo comes up with to murder these men gives us an idea of just has mad he has become. The pacing of the film is also very good and there is rarely a boring moment. The ending really doesn't follow the rest of the plot of the film, as it seems to want to go from a psycho-slasher film, to a "Dawn of the Dead" wannabe, but it is entertaining nonetheless and I must give Tim Ritter credit for wanting to use an unconventional ending.

I can honestly say that I enjoyed this film, but it is by no means a good film, if that makes sense. It's budget is its main stumbling block and the consequences are almost too much to overlook. I DO NOT recommend this to people who are totally spoiled by the big-budget movies and who can't have an open-mind to ultra-low budget films. You simply won't enjoy it. For others, and fans of gore--I say give it a shot. You will find at least SOMETHING redeeming in it!

Truly a work of art

After viewing Killing Spree at least a dozen times I still cannot get enough of its skilled acting and great special fx. Killing Spree should be considered a cult classic and has many useful quotes such as "I've just got to do something about these bills" and "Screw my wife, I screw drive your head!" Asbestos Felt effortlessly pulls off the role of a paranoid lunatic, by making his wife quit her job then sending her to live with her mom so he doesn't have to worry about her or her safety you start to realize his delusions know no bounds, in order to understand his mind you must know somebody whom you can relate to the character he is playing. Killing Spree should be viewed and enjoyed by many :)

Ultra cheesy
Leofwine_draca6 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
KILLING SPREE is a pretty extreme slice of indie comedy horror from the 1980s. Very poor quality and long forgotten indeed, it sees an ordinary guy (played by an actor with the incredible name of Asbestos Felt) being driven insane when he suspects his wife of adultery. He subsequently goes on a killing spree of all those he suspects are involved, but there's a supernatural twist in store when it turns out that the dead won't stay dead, much like at the end of MANIAC. It's an ultra cheesy film with plenty of overacting and at least one scene which rips off RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD quite openly. There are some surreal touches. The gore is very explicit but in a rubbery, fake-looking way so not disturbing at all.

Just stop it

Warning: Spoilers
Tom (Asbestos Felt) has an over active imagination when it comes to his wife Leeza (Courtney Lercara). He imagines she is having an affair with every man she meets. His imagination is at work when the lighting has a red glow. Tom kills all these men. Then the ending becomes so over the top, you think it wasn't the same boring him.

The acting, camera, and sound were all horrible. It is the type of film I was surprised by the fact I didn't see the microphone hanging down in every scene. Not the best VHS transfer either. I recommend avoiding this film, even for camp value.

I don't recall any f-bombs. Shower scene without nudity- in fact you catch a glimpse of Leeza' top and the guy's underwear.

Did I miss something?
BA_Harrison29 October 2009
Emotionally insecure Tom Russo (Asbestos Felt) reads the secret diary of his sexy wife Leeza (Courtney Lercara) and is dismayed to discover that the love of his life has apparently been sleeping with every bloke she meets; this shocking revelation sends poor Tom off his rocker, and he proceeds to wreak bloody revenge on the men who he believes have been rogering his old lady.

In my experience, really, really bad films can often be as much fun as really good ones, and no film featuring a decapitation by machete-enhanced ceiling fan should ever be considered completely worthless; but even though Killing Spree very occasionally manages to entertain with its inventiveness and cheap and cheerful gore, I found that the terrible direction, awful production values, ugly cinematography, muffled sound, dreadful lighting, mind numbingly tedious and daft narrative (which includes a really dumb plot twist that is telegraphed from the beginning, plus a pointless zombie finale), nasty synthesizer score, inane dialogue, and thoroughly amateurish acting all served to make this effort from writer/director Tom Ritter a virtually joyless experience.

This is a classic 80's horror flick. Cool gore from Joel Harlow, who is now a big time FX artist. The DVD looks great and I am happy to see it availible for a new generation of gore fans. It has everything a fan wants from a Tim Ritter movie: good story(humorous) and good gore.

Dreadful
brooke_gaylene9 June 2013
I don't know how anyone can give this more than 1 star, wish we could give it minus stars. The acting, editing, script, actors, music everything was awful. Sometimes a movie is so bad its funny even when its not supposed to be, this was even that.

This has to be the 2nd worst movie i have ever seen, i have no clue where the $75,000 budget went, it looks more like $7.50. Avoid at all costs, the people who like it must be involved in the movie. I wouldn't pay anyone involved with this, in fact they should pay us to watch it and if i knew how bad it was i still wouldn't have watched it even if i had been paid to watch.

Complete nonsense.

Florida Gore: 80's Style
Tromafreak10 July 2008
In a decade where Jason, Freddy & other Hollywood trash reigned supreme, a dead and buried genre, Florida Gore is resurrected, courtesy of a talented, young director named Tim Ritter. Killing Spree is camp at its absolute finest, to break it down for you, this film takes itself about as seriously as Lloyd Kaufman's Terror Firmer. Killing Spree centers on Tom Russo (played by the legendary Asbestos Felt) scruffy, blue collar, airplane repairman and jealous husband--soon to be psychotic. Toms wife in his previous marriage cheated on him, so, naturally, he's a little paranoid. Tom's new wife, Leeza is much more trustworthy, or is she? Tom recently found his hot wife's journal, in it he finds story after story that straight up proves his wife's infidelities, the poor guy snaps, and as the title suggests, Tom embarks on a killing spree, and a rather creative one at that. Tom starts with his best friend, Ben, that's right, she's a sick woman, Leeza even slept with Tom's 70 year old best friend. Until I saw Tom Kill Ben for the first time, I honestly had no idea you could kill someone by throwing a severed head at them. After all this, the electrician gets it, the delivery man gets it, even the lawn man gets it, as you can tell, both Tom & Leeza are a very busy couple. Giving away much more would spoil a truly rare horror experience. A drunken Asbestos Felt, with his over the top acting, and of course, the excessive, comical gore makes this one of the most entertaining horror movies in history. On a random note, the last thing I ever expected were zombies, which proves Killing Spree to be very unpredictable, and that's always a positive in the world of horror. On an even more Random note, gory killings of senior citizens is just something you don't see very often, which makes this movie all the more special. Killing spree will not disappoint, unless you just don't approve of low-budget cinema, in that case, reading this has been a complete waste of time, otherwise, you will not be disappointed. Highly recommended. 9/10

Great
polysicsarebest3 October 2004
This is a film about a guy who thinks his wife is cheating on him, so he kills off a bunch of people while having flashbacks of his wife doing these awful things. The main character cuts a girl's head off and tosses it from a really tall height, and it lands on a guy and kills the guy. She must have had a REALLY hard head. Also, check out hilarious deaths involving chainsaws and lawnmowers and splattered entrails and the like.

For whatever reason, all the characters come back to life as ZOMBIES at the end... uh, yeah. If you're into serious horror films, you'll probably hate this. The movie is surprisingly NOT played for laughs, though it's way too ridiculous to take seriously most of the time... But, anyway, I liked this film a lot, and I think you will too.

Average Z-grade horror
BrandtSponseller22 February 2005
After a former spouse cheated on him, Tom Russo ("Asbestos Felt") is paranoid and overprotective about his new wife, Leeza (Courtney Lercara). After his "best friend" comes over for dinner, Tom worries that he's putting the moves on Leeza. Things go from bad to worse when not only does Tom receive a 40% pay cut, but he discovers Leeza's diary/little black book, apparently detailing her rendezvous with countless men. In Tom's view, there is only one solution to his troubles--to go on a killing spree.

The primary reason you might want to watch Killing Spree, if not just because you want to see every horror film ever made, is to see what no budget independent filmmakers can do with the right attitude and some understanding and cooperative friends/colleagues. While Killing Spree certainly isn't a good film, and it's nowhere near the cream of the crop for such no budget productions, it is passable, and admirable for writer/director Tim Ritter's fortitude, passion and commitment to making genre films.

When reviewing films of this caliber, I make adjustments in the way I score due to inherent limitations of budget. Basically, if a flaw is something that cannot be avoided with the resources at hand, I do not subtract points for it. For example, the Russo home in Killing Spree isn't really an ideal setting, and I'm not sure the stark white walls work as a background for many scenes. But this isn't something I subtract points for, as it's easy to realize that at this level, you have to be happy that someone has a house you can use, and they're graciously allowing you to take it over for a number of days to film. You can't expect them to allow you to repaint their walls, destroy walls or carpeting, and so on.

However, Killing Spree has a number of flaws that it shouldn't have. The script is basically just an excuse for sex and death scenes. It's strictly by the numbers and very predictable--almost like a porno "script". There's no reason to not bother making a more interesting story. Ritter actually writes a few lines of interesting dialogue, but much more could be done.

And the sex scenes barely qualify. Even at a no budget level, you at least have to find actors willing to convincingly feign sex. And one should be able to find actors who'll do some gratuitous nudity. The lack of Z-grade horror skin and passion doesn't help the film, especially as it's a major focus of the story.

That leaves us with the horror. Typical for this type of film, the focus of the horror material tends to be on gore. That's because less visceral, more atmospheric horror takes a lot of artistry, especially without extensive resources for film stocks and processing, lighting, sets, an abundance of time for shooting and editing, and so on. But good gore isn't exactly easy to do either. Killing Spree's gore scenes run the gamut from rock-bottom bad to fairly skillful. Ritter doesn't build suspense very effectively in any scene, but Joel Harlow and Mark Pederson do occasionally admirable work when it comes to special makeup effects.

There are other problems, too. Perry Monroe's music is mostly amateur sounding. Although it is occasionally competent when Monroe emphasizes minimalism, whenever he tries to become more melodic, it's mostly rudimentary arpeggios, too-obvious synthesizer pitch shifts and very generic production music. The timing on Robert Williams editing is frequently off, especially in the earlier scenes of the film. This isn't helped by the fact that Ritter appears to shoot "coverage" without the actors running through the scene repeatedly while the camera captures different perspectives. Instead, he seems to set an actor up for reaction shots where they're not really reacting to anything. It doesn't help the performances, which come across as much more artificial. Williams and Ritter also have a tendency to let shots establishing mundane actions linger.

However, Ritter does do some things right that many directors at this level miss or overlook. He at least makes an attempt to shoot coverage. He has a good sense of blocking and framing. He occasionally finds interesting perspectives for camera placement. He occasionally uses lighting artistically. His location shots are good and varied. He can effectively convey an action scene (and should have done much more of this, as the few in the film are pretty good). He mostly gets decent performances out his amateur cast. He has an interesting sense of humor (which I wish would come out more in films like this)--for example, at one point there's a zombie who jumps in front of an actor and says, "Boo!" He is inventive--the death scenes are usually amusingly creative.

Of course you should lower your expectations when approaching fare like Killing Spree. This is an average Z-grade horror flick; much better than something like Insaniac (2002), but not near as good as something like Silo Killer (2002).

Not Just Low Budget, BAD Low Budget
konky200022 May 2003
I understood before watching this film that it would be a low budget gore film. But even by those low standards this film doesn't cut it.

The problem isn't so much that the filmmakers had a low budget or had bad acting, writing, directing, sound, music and editing. I expected all of that to be bad, and it is.

The biggest problem with this film is that it didn't even do a good job on the guts and gore. Most of the 'action' takes place off screen and all we get to see are the after effects, which look very fake -- even by the standards of low budget gore films.

There really is no excuse for the gore being so poorly done. Peter Jackson made the equally low budget 'Bad Taste' at about the same time and he somehow was able to make much more convincing guts and gore than was shown in this film.

A failure on just about every level, I can't recommend this film to anybody. Steer clear of it.

Made For Fans Of Comical Gore!
tie19854 November 1999
KILLING SPREE is a low-budget horror flick that was shot on 16mm film. The intent of this movie is not to give you a brilliant story, although this one does have a good twist and some radical zombies returning from the dead at the end. No, the whole reason for its existence is to showcase outrageous "splatter effects" that were so popular in the '80s. While they may not be top-of-the-line, they do hold a special place for fans of this genre. Within KILLING SPREE you will find some of the most creative "kill sequences" ever committed to celluloid! Not since DAWN OF THE DEAD has there been so much over-the-top humor and glee in showcasing this kind of phony gore. So take it for what it is. If you're a fan of movies like BAD TASTE, PINK FLAMINGOS, and BLOOD FEAST, you will appreciate KILLING SPREE.

You screw my wife, I screwdrive your head!
lastliberal10 July 2010
Good old fashioned 8o's B-movie serial killer fare.

Tom (Asbestos Felt) is the jealous sort, and thinks that his wife Leeza (Courtney Lercara) might be cheating on him.

But, it's not just a slasher film, it is a weird slasher film. It can't even be described; it must be seen to be believed.

The acting is what you would expect of a B movie, and you don't even get a good shower scene. You really don't get any good blood and gore until the end.

And then the zombies come...

Not the best B-movie, but some will like it.

Is this supposed to be serious? I hope not. This is one of the most pathetically hilarious movies I've ever seen. Given that I picked it up for a buck on the "Bad movies" shelf, it sure lives up to its spot in the shop. What can I say, the gore effects are spattered (pun-intended) all over the place, some looking quite real, some looking like a teddy bear that's had an accident with a bottle of tomato sauce. The music is some of the most horrible I've heard, the acting is one of the most amusing elements... must I continue? Don't bother unless you've seen every other pathetic horror movie in the shop and this is all that's left.

Seems like an HB Acting School scene study workshop where people are trying to become actors. If this were the stage, the Coaches would have been "CUTTING" them every minute. But that's why it was funny. Plot? Bizarre. This should also be listed as "Comedy-Horror." Too comedic to be straight horror and not enough horror to be horror. But I like gore and this gave me some of what I wanted. Some scenes were like SNL skits. Watch it for laughs.

Warning: Spoilers
Here we have "Killing Spree", a movie by Tim Ritter, about a man Tom Russo, who faces problems at work, haunted by the actions of his ex-wife, and fears his current wife (Leeza) will cheat on him like his ex. These fears become "reality" when he finds rough drafts for stories his wife is writing (entirely fake). Not realizing they are stories, he goes on a killing spree (wonder where they got the name), murdering everyone mentioned in the book. His neighbor, an old lady, finds out and tries to get Tom to murder her husband, he instead murders her. Those he has murdered come back as zombies and he kills himself.

First, the story is kinda lame. But what do you expect? The story is never the main point of low-budget splatter movies, it's the gore. Which leads me into my next point, the gore. The gore is good, a few good deaths (like the old lady), and a few lame ones (the "decapitated head"), it dishes up enough blood so that this movie isn't a total waste of time.

The acting can be described as an amusing attempt at amateur acting. It gets pretty bad, but not to the point where you want to shut it off. The people he kills tend to over-act a bit, but Tom and Leeza manage to act enough like real people.

I give it a five, it's a decent attempt, and fans of low-budget gore flicks will like it, but casual horror fans will find limited enjoyment.

Love is hard

Warning: Spoilers
Tim Ritter might not be the best person for your female friends to date but we're not trying to fix him up with someone. We're watching SOV. For that, he's the right person, as Killing Spree builds on the same plot I've seen in several of his movies - man is either getting cucked or has fears that his wife is sleeping around - and he loses it and kills everyone he knows.

Tom Russo is that man, an airplane mechanic working non-stop to keep a nice house for his wife Leeza. He's sure that she's cheating on him - he's read her diary - so he starts killing anyone who she has written about, starrting with his friend Ben and a punk girl whose head he cuts off and uses as a weapon to murder his former buddy.

Anyone in Leeza's notebook dies, like the electrican who gets chopped off by a machete ceiling fan and the lawn guy who gets buried up to his neck and mowed.

The truth? Leeza has been writing for a romance magazine to earn money so Tom doesn't have to work so hard. But now, Maniac-like, all the victims are coming back from the dead and begin to shout at Tom to kill his wife so they can rest.

Shot on 16mm instead of camcorder - yes, I know, it's another SOV that doesn't live up to the format - this movie has an old ladyt's face get hammer-based surgery and the line "You screw my wife, I screwdrive your head!"

Also: The lead actor's name is Asbestos Felt.

Tim Ritter's best!!!
VideoMonkey8 August 2001
This is so far from the mainstream that I can understand that not many people will like it. I,however, like this sort of flick. And as far, as no-budget indie horror flicks go, Tim Ritter is THE MAN. And this is definitely, my favorite of his movies. If you did not like this you will definitely hate his other movies, but if you saw 'Truth or Dare' or one of his other movies and thought it was cool then check this one for sure. It's got great gore effects, a rather cool plot twist and, like most of Ritter's flicks, as the goriness surmounts, the plot thins in almost a surreal manner which still today has me wondering if it was meant to or it just turns out that way....

Watch Out For The Bloodied Mannequin Head, Foo'
DavyDissonance5 March 2020
Some guy loses his mind after finding out his wife is a ho' (or is she?), thus, kills off all those she f···ed. Killing Spree is a home made movie and despite a devastating production value, it's actually not bad. It's cut pretty well, the gore effects are goofy looking but in its own "special" way neat, the story is decent with a twist towards the end that makes no sense (no, it wasn't a hallucination) and s···. The pacing is slow and it takes a bit of time for it to blossom into wacky fun, so that's gay. I wouldn't say it's crappy fun to the levels of Nail Gun Massacre but it is indeed a hoot.

Stupid, but also hilarious.
metalrage66629 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
That's exactly what I thought while watching this in between fits of laughter. You cannot take this movie seriously.

Recently married couple moves into a spacious 2 storey home in what appears to be a very new housing estate area. The husband, played by Asbestos Felt, is an old-fashioned kind of guy as despite their issues of paying the bills and mortgage, he refuses to have his wife out of the house and working. Matters are made worse financially, as his company ends up cutting back on salaries by 40%, so rather than have his wife return to the workforce, he insists on getting additional work including night work.

As such, all this work means that he's out of the house a lot and his wife is stuck in the house by herself. One evening, her husband comes across a diary with stories written by his wife which reveal the extra-curricular activities that she's been getting up to while he's been at work all day. So this begins his jealous and murderous rampage by getting his revenge on every man that's since slept with his wife starting with his best friend, and the rest of the movie writes itself.

What he's not aware of is that all these stories are nothing more than fantasies written by his wife who was inspired by the various trades people that came to the house, such as the TV repairman, electrician, gardener etc. As she was not allowed to leave the house to go to work she created her own work and sold the stories to a publisher for romance novels and made a nice profit in the hopes of surprising her husband to try to relieve some of the financial stress they're under.

At times I found myself in fits of laughter throughout this movie. If Asbestos' wild-man hair, crazy expressions and non-acting skills don't make you laugh, then the cheap effects, nonsensical plot or the quirky older neighbour will. After reading the first story he goes for a walk to try and cool off but ends up kicking and throwing punches at any random object he passes, including some unfortunate members of the public.

The murders become more and more inventive as his jealous rage consumes him after he reads more stories. Early on in the movie we learn that a former girlfriend of his cheated on him and therefore he is over-protective and possessive of his wife, but has nightmares of her cheating on him. The horror won't scare you nor will it turn your stomach in any way, but the insane chuckling probably will.

Like most 80's horror movies, the ending really lets it down as it goes in a very weird direction. I don't get how the recently killed people all end up coming back to life seeking their revenge. But to make it even more nonsensical, albeit funny, these "zombies" all end up standing around in a committee while debating over which one of them gets to kill him. Strangely there is a trade off between the husband and the zombies, as they agree that if he kills his wife, then they'll be satisfied and leave, seeing as it was all her fault and none of this would've happened had she not written those stories. As it turns out, he can't kill his wife and instead sacrifices himself by cutting open his own throat with a large hacksaw.

The whole ordeal seems to just end as the only one left is the wife who after all that trauma just wanders out of the house. I ended up roaring with laughter again as the end scene has her husband breaking up through the wooden porch area in a desperate, yet hilarious attempt, to attack his wife.

Other detracting factors are the filming and some of the effects. This must have been done on a shoestring budget as it looks more like a home movie filmed with a camcorder. And annoyingly, a pink spotlight shines out of god-knows-where whenever one of the fantasy stories is being read. This movie is utterly ridiculous but the comedy aspect makes this worth watching this at least once.
