Cannes rejected it. The Oscars ignored it. But “Amélie” lives on, as everyone’s favorite crème-brulee-cracking, stone-skipping Montmartre mischief-maker and romantic go-between is back in theaters come Valentine’s Day, courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics.
“Amélie,” directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and written by the French filmmaker with Guillaume Laurant, remains one of the 21st-century arthouse’s most imaginative confections, the rare film perhaps more misunderstood now than it was when it came out in 2001. Make no mistake that “Amélie” was huge then. There was the box office, the awards, the infectious swells of composer Yann Tiersen’s music in the air (at least in my headphones), and then came the imitators. I remember in college a close friend had a poster of the film pinned to her dorm room wall, a bemused Audrey Tautou upright in bed flanked by framed pictures of an Elizabeth-collared dog and a white-feathered fowl, and...

Even before the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Dceu’s aspirations of building a cohesive, interconnected universe had come to an abrupt end with the prospect of a big-scale reboot spanning through upcoming live-action and animated ventures. For fans who grew up in the late 1990s, when DC’s diversified animated ventures dominated the pop culture scene, or even earlier than that, when in printed comics DC exemplified absolute dominance in sheer variety and quality of titles, it was inconceivable that its first attempt at live-action world-building would meet a disastrous end—let alone not even come close to replicating the success of the aforementioned mediums. However, even amidst the haphazard, clueless continuity problems, poor reception, and mismanagement, there were silver linings in the form of some iconic moments scattered across sixteen movies and a TV series, which fans will surely remember in years to come. As we bid farewell to Dceu,...

The event, curated and organized by Philippa Kowarsky and Alesia Weston, is a one-of-a-kind pilot for a long-term alliance that seeks to connect investigative journalists and their reporting with the film and television industry.
The event has been established by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (Occrp) and the Gabo Foundation as part of both institutions’ public interest focus. It will attempt “to nurture a symbiotic relationship between investigative journalism and fiction filmmaking that will result in storytelling that entertains, educates, and inspires,” according to a press statement. “Investigative journalists can help adapt their extensive reporting about organized crime and corruption into new formats to reach more audiences while filmmakers can pull from a wealth of content and expertise across subjects to inform their projects.”

The Cairo International Film Festival’s upcoming 45th edition has been canceled due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
The Cairo fest and market, which is the oldest running film event in the Middle East and Africa, announced its decision Wednesday on Instagram with the following statement: “Minister of Culture Dr. Neven El-Kelany has decided to postpone the 45th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival, which was scheduled to take place from Nov. 15 to 24. The new date for the festival will be determined later.”
But the Cairo Fest’s press office subsequently specified that the postponement actually amounts to a de-facto cancellation. It comes as Egypt is contending with a mass exodus of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip into its Sinai Peninsula, amid Israeli bombardments. Israel’s attacks on Gaza have prompted Egypt to urge Israel to provide safe passage for civilians from the enclave rather than encouraging them to flee southwest towards Sinai.

Demonic possession is all the rage in Hollywood. This year alone, we’ve been haunted by Huesera: The Bone Woman, Attachment, Evil Dead Rise, Talk to Me, It Lives Inside, Run Rabbit Run, and The Nun II. Hell, they even rebooted The Exorcist with Ellen Burstyn and cast none other than Russell Crowe as a boozy Italian man of the cloth who locks horns with al diavolo. Now there’s In the Fire, a new film from director Conor Allyn (No Man’s Land).

"Do you believe you can cure him?" Saban Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie thriller titled In the Fire, the latest creation from American filmmaker Conor Allyn (after No Man's Land a few years ago). This Italian co-production was filmed partly in Italy, with a release now set for October in the US. A doctor from New York travels to a remote plantation in the 1890s to care for a disturbed boy who seems to have inexplicable abilities (or some kind of special powers). She begins treating the child, but in doing so ignites a war of science versus religion with the local priest who believes the boy is possessed by the Devil and is the reason for all the village's woes. Amber Heard stars as Dr. Grace Burnham, with an international cast including Eduardo Noriega and Lorenzo McGovern Zaini. Do you believe in his power? Or is it some disease?...

Anil Sharma, the director of the upcoming film ‘Gadar 2’, is glad that he opted for an authentic approach to fight scenes over VFX for Gadar 2. The film promises an array of larger-than-life action sequences that rely more on genuine stunts over VFX.
The director has rejected claims of the action in his film being old-school and has compared keeping things real like filmmaker Christopher Nolan, who too relies more on practical effects.
Talking about the same, the director explained: “I don’t consider it old-school action. It’s raw action. Look at some of Tom Cruise’s stunts in the ‘Mission Impossible’ series or Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, even in the US, artistes are striving to keep things real and that’s what I wanted to do.”

The spiritual successor to the classic action film franchises of yesteryear will live on as a TV show. The Has Fallen series, which includes Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen, and Angel Has Fallen, all having starred Gerard Butler, is set to have a television adaptation titled Paris Has Fallen. The show is already due to start its production at the end of the month, according to Deadline. Principle photography will take place in London and France, starting on May 30.
The series will not have Gerard Butler as the star, although there is no ruling out any cameos, especially since Butler will be a producer on the project through his production company, G-Base. Instead, French filmmaker and actor Mathieu Kassovitz will be starring in the action vehicle. By the time the fifth season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” rolls around, Serena Joy Waterford (Yvonne Strahovski) is already in dire straits. Still stuck in a detention facility in Canada, she has lost most of her allies, as well as her power and status in Gilead. But it’s after she learns that her husband, Fred (Joseph Fiennes), has been murdered that her world truly comes crashing down, as she’s left to fend for herself and her unborn child, in a foreign country and with the lingering fear that her former handmaid June (Elisabeth Moss) — who, alongside a group of other erstwhile handmaids, is responsible for Fred’s murder — could come for her next. While the grieving, desperate widow summons June to the battlefield in an act of retaliation, her main goal going forward, Strahovski argues, is to keep her head above water.

Jessica Lee Gagné had shot Ben Stiller’s narrative TV directorial debut, “Escape at Dannemora,” in 2017, but when Stiller told her about his next project, she had a hard time getting on board. The focal point of Apple TV+’s critically acclaimed series “Severance” is an office — a big square room with white walls, beaming fluorescent lights tucked into a low ceiling, four desks at the center, and a green carpet. Outside that is a labyrinth of stark white hallways even brighter than inside the office. Gagné couldn’t think of anything worse as a director of photography.
“There were no windows,” she said. “I can’t not have a window. But ‘Severance’ is probably a good lesson that you can really make [something] what you want it to be.”
Gagné is a meticulous Dp. She hates failure, loves testing, and despite the difficulty it takes to stand up to those...

It took 14 nominations before cinematographer Roger Deakins finally landed the elusive Oscar for “Blade Runner 2049.” He’s the frontrunner again for “1917,” the bravura, single-shot-seeming World War I thriller, directed by Sam Mendes. But this time it’s different: he’s entering the realm of Emmanuel (Chivo) Lubezki with his technical feat.
“1917” is not only the tour de force of the season, but also the boldest movie of Deakins’ legendary career. On Friday, he earned his 16th Asc nomination, and is now on track to win his second consecutive Oscar.
Yet the concept of shooting “1917” as one continuous take (stitched together by editor Lee Smith) initially came as quite a shock to Deakins. That is, until Mendes convinced him that it was the best way to tell his story of two young British soldiers — Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) — sent on a seemingly impossible mission to...

Season four ended with Gotham City being turned to No Man's Land following Jeremiah's destruction of the city's bridges, keeping anyone from coming into the city or leaving it. Gotham City is now overrun by villains, with only Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), and...

Television characters love to play games. Audiences have seen characters play everything from chess to tag.
Two games, in particular, are very popular to base an episode or subplot around -- poker and Dungeons & Dragons.
Although it is based on even older games, poker as we know it has been around since the 19th century -- hence its enduring association with saloons. So when television became a thing, poker had already been popular for quite a while.
Early on television shows incorporated poker into the daily lives of its characters. Both I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners had episodes revolving around poker games. Maverick and The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet made poker a recurring focus.

Take a look at new set images, plus footage from the final season of "Gotham" airing in 2019, adapting DC Comics' "No Man's Land", including a first look at 'Bane' (Shane West) and 'Bruce Wayne' (David Mazouz) revealing the first 'Batman' suit:
"Its closer to 'The Dark Knight Rises'," said series showrunner David Stephens.
"It's a little more metallic 'Bat battle-y' looking rather than something like the 'Suicide' one or the 'Affleck' one"...
"... it's got to look good. Because you don't want to spend five years, and all of a sudden go, 'Great episode, but that was a really crappy looking costume.'
"There’s a lot of pressure, but luckily our wardrobe department is amazing so all the designs they're doing are going to be great. And we went with short ears..."

The cast and creators gave us a lot of info about what to expect from Gotham Season 5.
Batman is on his way to Gotham. First, however, the Fox series named after the comic book metropolis has ten episodes left in its fifth and final season run before the hero arrives. And for Dark Knight to rise, Gotham must fall.
And fall it shall, based on the news to come out of last week's Gotham panel at New York Comic Con. The biggest revelation was that the tenth and final episode would jump a decade into Gotham’s future, and feature Batman, as well as a portly Penguin in a top hat, with umbrella and monocle. It's not the only instance the season will be playing with time.
“We pick up at the top of season five, at the conclusion of No Man's Land, Day 365,” showrunner John Stephens told Den of Geek.

The first trailer has been released for the 5th and final season of Gotham. The trailer starts off with a recap of the series and then ends with a first look at what is in store for the final ten episodes. As you’ll see, Gotham City is looking pretty bleak after the events of Season 4.
Season 4 ended with Gotham City being turned to No Man's Land, following Jeremiah's destruction of the city's bridges, keeping anyone from coming into the city or leaving it. Gotham City is now overrun by villains, with only Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie), Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), and Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) left to defend it.
Good luck guys! It looks like they have their work cut out for them! I can’t wait to see how this series comes to an end!

Gotham has been a huge hit for the last few years and, although devisive amongst the fans, it remains it's own unique take on the Batman universe. It could almost be called an "Elseworlds" version of Gotham City. The fourth season recently released on blu-ray and season five rumors are heating-up!

The show is featuring their own take on the legendary No Man's Land comic book story arc during the fifth and final season of the series. The latest casting news is that Shane West is being brought in as Eduardo Dorrance, an old Army buddy of Jim Gordon. There aren't any further details about this casting, but eagle-eyed fans will note that the name of the character closely resembles the real name of the character King Snake, Sir Edmund Dorrance.

Geoff Johns is working on a new Shazam series for DC. Here's everything we know...
Over the last two years, DC Comics has found its soul again. Kicking off with the Rebirth one shot in spring 2016, DC combined a kind of back-to-basics approach to its heroes with a knack for matching the right creative teams to their characters. We've had some potentially all-time great creative runs on Green Arrow, Batman, and The Flash, potentially all-time great comic series such as Mister Miracle, and recent all-star launches like the Brian Michael Bendis Superman books and Scott Snyder's Justice League.
But where has Shazam been in all of this? Well, the right creative team is finally in place.
Coming this November is a new Shazam series from Geoff Johns and Dale Eaglesham. The new book spins out of backups that ran through early arcs of Johns' Justice League,...

As Michael Jackson's beloved and only daughter, Paris Jackson grew up in a house ripped out of fairytales. Neverland Ranch, the fantastical estate filled with ferris wheels and petting zoos, was Paris' playground. But now the 19-year-old model is all grown up and living in No Man's Land...or so it would seem. Watch our video to see Paris' humble hippie dwellings. When Paris came of age, it was reported that she relocated to her father's former estate in Encino, pre-Neverland. Apparently she wanted to live somewhat in seclusion, and the estate was recommended (as the Jackson family heiress, she still had legal rights to it). But since the bulk of the mansion was still under construction, Paris decided to move into the quaint guesthouse where her father made demos of hits like "Beat It" and "Billie Jean." And since the place was a bonafide hub of creativity and positive energy,...

Gotham Season 5 will allow the show to wrap up its early Batman story. Here's everything we know so far.
Gotham Season 5 is definitely happening!
Gotham Season 5 was renewed by Fox in what TV Line describes as an "11th hour decision" for the network. Gotham Season 5 will mark the final batch of episodes for Fox's Batman prequel, and the idea is that this will be the year that will "wrap up" Bruce's early journey to becoming Batman.
The renewal was a little bit of a surprise considering that Gotham hasn't been at its most fabulous - in terms of ratings, at least - during its fourth season. The show saw a steep decline in viewership during its fourth season, after a relatively strong season premiere. But its fans are loyal, and its streaming and international numbers might be strong. And there is something to be said...

It looks like Gotham's final season will kick off in March...
Gotham season 5 is definitely happening, which is a relief. Earlier this year, news broke that Gotham had been renewed in an "11th hour decision" for Fox, and season 5 will mark the final batch of episodes for the network's Batman prequel series. The idea is that the renewal will give the show a chance to wrap up Bruce's early journey to becoming Batman, which may or may not include a time jump (it probably will).

Wolf Creek 2

These days, we're all jaded and amused when it comes to scandals in baseball, but 25 years ago this week (on September 2, 1988) came a movie that reminded us of a time when we were actually shocked over events that tarnished the reputation of the national pastime. With a cast led by rising stars John Cusack, Charlie Sheen, and D.B. Sweeney, "Eight Men Out" recounted the story of the 1919 Black Sox scandal, in which gamblers paid several players on the Chicago White Sox to throw the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds.
Writer/director John Sayles, adapting Eliot Asinof's book of the same title, portrayed the Black Sox players as exploited workers out to punish their skinflint owner and claim bonuses that had been denied them. And while they did so in a way that was illegal and unsportsmanlike, they were meted out an awfully harsh punishment (being banned from the...

Fast Five Blu-Ray Combo Pack Universal Home Entertainment 2011/130 & 132 mins/Rated & Unrated List Price: $34.99 – Available October 4, 2011 A lot can change in a decade. Is the Fast and the Furious series really that old? I remember on April 28, 2001, exactly ten years ago, I got the chance to see the first installment in what has become a money making franchise. This was actually the original date the film was to be released, but Universal Pictures felt they had a summer hit on their hands and pushed it back to Friday June 22. Yet I got the chance to see the pic two months early through one of those market research groups. I'll admit it, I found the film rather underwhelming. After seeing trailers for the feature through much of the Winter, I thought Rob Cohen had made a nice little crime thriller. Twenty minutes into the film, the thing took a 180 for me when...
