Brems (numa@pipeline.com) about the audio restoration: The MPAA requested cuts after screening the orig film in a raw state (unmixed audio, etc). Most of those cuts, you can guess, were in and around the "over-the-top" violence, including the Kinney and Murphy death scenes. Portions of these scenes were cut before the final audio was mixed, and the only sound elements available during the Criterion transfer for these deleted shots was straight production audio. In some cases there was no audio at all! For instance, there's a restored shot of Kinney laying on Delta City REALLY getting pulped, and the program track was blank! It was fairly easy to pull audio in from surrounding digital program track in Soundtools without affecting the surround sound track. It was just constant machine gun noise. It wasn't so easy doing this for the Murphy death scene, due to the dialog and variety of soundeffects in the scene. You may notice some "fake" stereo in the quiet portions of the program there. It took a couple of edits before THX finally approved the audio track for release. BTW - If you review that scene in the original theatrical cut, Murphy is suddenly and inexplicably missing an arm. The shot where he actually loses it has been restored in the Criterion release. In some ways, I think the head-shot is more dramatically effective in the theatrical cut, because it's cut in such a way that Murphy sees the bullet coming. In the restored scene, because they wanted to put as much of the beautiful (it is, really) dummy in the shot as possible, Murphy's too busy being anguished to see anything. Check it. |
