I've said it once and I'll say it again, because when I said it the first time, I was alone...just like now...
Hmm...
Oh, never has a horror movie been so deliciously cheesy than it was in the 80's. Delicious, delicious cheese in the form of THE SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE, SLEEPAWAY CAMP and SLUGS was smashed into the faces of film-goers who never knew how lucky they were until it was all over. The 80's was a time in which horror movies were allowed to be fun. They were filled with inconsequential characters who's first name you would be hard-pressed to remember as they ran from a killer with a drill, or from an animal/insect gone amok, or from what would turn out to be a 13-year-old hermaphrodite with a freaky face and a tiny dingle thing.
Here we have SLUGS, one of the best 80's horror movies. It's about a small town overrun with Donna Summer. No, I kid. Of course this town is overrun with SLUGS. Not the sticky, slow, undeadly kind, but the sticky, slow, DEADLY kind. These slugs could crawl everywhere and anywhere, but these slugs mostly preferred to crawl in Old Man Trash's trash basement, filled with empty pizza boxes and other trash. (For the record, my goal in life is to live like this man, in that when I have trash, I throw it down the cellar steps into a room I apparently will never need to use). So, since slugs love garbage (a fact that I learned watching SLUGS; also a fact they may very well be untrue), they descend to Old Man Trash's trash basement and they hang around, sucking onto trash as if it was an aphrodisiac. This will be their home base to suck trash and have slug sex, I guess.
Right around here is when we meet Mike Brady, a health inspector and 1/9th of a Bunch of Bradies. Honestly, was naming a character Mike Brady during the enormous popularity of THE BRADY BUNCH a smart move? Hey, better yet, you know what WAS a smart move? SLUGS!!
The best way to dictate to you what SLUGS is about would simply be to have you think of JAWS. Take away JAWS and put SLUGS in the title. That's basically it. Small town Mike Brady realizes a strain of mutant slugs is invading the town. He attempts to alert authorities; said authorities laugh. People begin to die one by one under strange, mysterious, slug-like circumstances. Then an expert on slugs shows up and the two hunt the slugs.
However, one thing Spielberg's film never had: an exploding face.
Or slugs.
But I digress.
As Mike Brady begins his investigation on this strain of sticky killer slugs, we meet his next door neighbors, of which the wife is a drunk--a plot point that will play heavily later on in the film--and the husband who wears suits and does nothing else. Hey, remember when I said the wife was a drunk and that it would play heavily in the film? Well, that can play heavily now. Wife comes home from grocery shopping, pours a glass of wine, throws a bundle of lettuce into the sink and passes out on the couch. Then a slug shows up, having crawled out of the drain and into the lettuce. Wife eventually wakes up from her drunken stupor and begins cutting the lettuce--you guessed it--and the slug! Later that night, husband eats the lettuce, and slug slices, and feels wonderful about it. He feels so wonderful, in fact, that when he takes his wife out to eat the following night, blood drains out of his nose into his water glass and his face explodes.
SLUGS!!
Mike Brady comes home to the news that his neighbor had been killed. Then he sees a giant slug in the garden and it bites him when he points at it for too long. He marvels at the biting slug, and also at its size, which is about 6 inches. I guess that's impressive, but if you're Mike Brady, you're f*cking terrified. Soon, the said expert from earlier shows up and they begin their sluggery. Meanwhile, a couple of naked high schoolers, while in their lovers embrace, fall victim to a sea of slugs that formed quickly on the floor under their bed. The slugs crawl inside their butts (probably) and they also explode (hopefully).
Without ruining the end for you, Mike and other guy blow up the entire sewer system, killing all the slugs. Sewer lids rain down upon cars and street like it's the apocalypse. Then Mike and other guy celebrate with a glass of Slug champagne.
Unless the other guy died in the sewer.
I think he died in the sewer.
Mike celebrated the end of the slugs with a glass of slug champagne.
The slugs were never seen again, but you know what was seen? Crap like SAW, HOSTEL and other crappy crap that made horror movies unfun again. Hopefully one day Eli Roth will eat a slug burger and his face will explode.
