Found footage may not be a theatrical sensation anymore (if it ever really was), but the genre is alive and well on the VOD market. Well, alive at least. It’s accessible in a Diy sense due to not really needing actors or a budget in order to create, quality be damned. A few years back one of the most notable entries was The Houses October Built, which was a hybrid of documentary footage (the full documentary is included as a bonus on the first film’s Blu-ray) and a narrative through line. The doc is about haunts around the country...

This fall semester I started taking an Italian language class two evenings a week with my daughter, and Thursday night I was looking to decompress after our first big quiz. (Scores haven’t been revealed yet, but I think we did just fine.) So I started rummaging through my shelves and came across the Warner Archives DVD of Francesco Maselli’s A Fine Pair (1968), an ostensibly breezy romantic caper comedy which reteams Rock Hudson and Claudia Cardinale, a pairing their public was presumably clamoring for after their previous outing together in Blindfold (1965), a Universal programmer written and directed by Phillip Dunne, the screenwriter of, among many other notable movies, How Green Was My Valley. I’ve had a mad crush on Claudia ever since I first saw her in Circus World (1964) with John Wayne when I was but a youngster, and I always welcome the chance to visit movies of...

Remember when the History Channel used to be a reliable source of information? When it featured credible documentaries that you almost felt comfortable enough citing in an essay (if only teachers would allow that)? Those days are long gone in favor of a more sensationalist channel that attempts to reel in viewers by making grandiose promises and then failing to deliver on them. Secret Access: The Presidency is the perfect example, as its premise isn’t too far-fetched—truths about the operation of this country few people outside the President’s staff knows about—but eventually even it capitulates to a concept that’s just too good to be true.

Quadrophenia (Criterion) Franc Roddam’s 1979 film based on The Who’s classic rock opera tells the story of working class lad Jimmy (Phil Daniels) struggling to find his identity in a rapidly changing Britain, circa 1965. Jimmy is a “mod,” a youth movement dedicated to wearing snappy suits, driving Vespa motor scooters bedecked with side mirrors, popping amphetamines and obsessed with the new sound of bands like The Who and The Kinks. Their other pastime is engaging in bloody brawls with “rockers,” throwbacks to the 1950s, who listen to Elvis and Gene Vincent, wear leather biker gear, grease in their hair and drive massive motorcycles a la Marlon Brando in “The Wild One.” Often cited as a worthy successor to “Rebel Without a Cause” as the greatest angry youth picture ever made, it is that and more, including a first cousin to the “kitchen sink” dramas of scribes John Osborne,...

In a very odd sort of news, Kathryn Bigelow, the Oscar-wining director of The Hurt Locker, is accused of having Top-Secret access to information about the killing of Osama bin Laden. This might not be so much of an attack on the director for being a civilian and reading all the secret details, but on President Obama and the White House "granting" the rights to Bigelow. How this accusation all started and the details is actually a bit suspicious and interesting.
To start, Bigelow has a film in development that chronicles the events leading up to the raid that eventually killed Bin Laden which gained lots of steam after the killing. Now, in an August 6th edition of The New York Times, Columnist Maureen Dowd wrote that the White House administration are giving "top level access to the most classified mission in history."...
