Amitabh Bachchan as Ganga Ram, Mithun Chakraborthy as Jamuna Das ( Mithun replaced Jeetendra), and Rishi Kapoor as Saraswati Chandra, were the original trio to star in this film. Mukesh Khanna was approached to play the main villain. It is rumored that shooting with the trio had taken place before the final changes took effect.
The song Disco Bhangra was conceived with Mithun Chakraborthy in mind. When the script was changed,Amitabh ended up doing the song. He self admittedly felt uncomfortable doing the song.
The original script was written by Kader Khan, but due to rivalry between Manmohan Desai and Kader Khan the script was changed. In the original script the movie was a three hero project, and the third hero's role was written for Rishi Kapoor.
Mithun Chakraborty didn't co-operate to dub his dialog's and Sudesh Bhonsle stepped in who dubbed some of his dialogues. The speculation at the time was that Mithun felt the director Manmohan Desai played favorite to Amitabh Bachchan. Mithun was upset with how much his role was edited out. His role now seemed very weak. So in retaliation he refused to complete his dubbing The film released in 1988 with a few scenes with Mithun's voice dubbed. Surprisingly in later years a different version was released on DVD. In this version released, Mithun's voice was not dubbed in any scene's. Mithun spoke his dialogues in his own voice and not a dubbing artiste as in the original released version. This would come as a complete shocker due to the story of Mithun not completing his dubbing due to problems with Manmohan Desai. Many wonder when Mithun dubbed for those scenes and why this version was not released in 1988 when the film was first released . Both version of the film are on you tube.
Pravin Bhatt's dull cinematography and S .Ramanathan's below average production value was criticized heavily by the public. Manmohan Desai's past films usually had great cinematography and production value. The film for the most part not being set in a urban atmosphere also went against Ganga Jamuna Saraswathi. Even in films like Coolie and Mard, there was good presentation and balance show of urban city life and characters. Ganga Jamuna Saraswati did not enough of that.
