(Sidney Lumet, John Guillermin, Guy Hamilton, 1974-82; StudioCanal, PG)
The production partnership of John Brabourne (the Eton-educated seventh Baron Brabourne) and Richard B Goodwin (who started out as a teenage tea boy with the Rank Organisation) is one of the most interesting in the British cinema. Its highlights include David Lean's A Passage to India and the two-part Little Dorrit, but its most popular works were the period Agatha Christie pictures that brought all-star casting and unfashionably high production values to the whodunit and set new standards for the string of TV productions that followed. Brabourne's father-in-law Lord Mountbatten helped secure the rights from Dame Agatha, and the three best are the Hercule Poirot mysteries in this Blu-ray set. Ustinov plays the Belgian sleuth both in John Guillermin's Death on the Nile (1978), scripted by Anthony Shaffer and superbly photographed by Jack Cardiff, and in Guy Hamilton's bland...

Actor known for his roles as clergymen, favourite uncles and tragic-comic characters
There is a great tradition in the rotundity of actors, and Roger Hammond, who has died aged 76 of cancer, stands proudly in a line stretching from Francis L Sullivan and Willoughby Goddard through to Roy Kinnear, Desmond Barrit and Richard Griffiths, though he was probably more malleably benevolent on stage than any of them.
He reeked of kindness, consideration and imperturbability, with a pleasant countenance and a beautiful, soft voice, qualities ideal for unimpeachable clergymen, favourite uncles and tragic-comic characters such as Waffles in Chekhov's Uncle Vanya (whom he played in a 1991 BBC TV film, with David Warner and Ian Holm), a man whose wife left him for another man on his wedding day but who has remained faithful to her and forgiving ever since.

There have been more than 400 film and TV adaptations so far, and counting, some brilliant, some memorably awful
The opening credits of BBC1's new three-part adaptation of Great Expectations (27-29 December) show a chrysalis cracking open to reveal a pair of trembling wings. A few seconds later this delicate emergence is replaced on screen by the escaped convict Magwitch (Ray Winstone) erupting from the stagnant waters of the Essex marshes. Covered in blood and slime, he is at once the monster of nightmares and a huge misshapen baby gasping its first breath.
In a single sequence, the director Brian Kirk gets to the heart of Dickens's novel as a fable of rebirth and renewal. Together with Sarah Phelps, the screenwriter, he has created a world in which characters are forever seeking to transform themselves – or each other. A spookily young Miss Havisham (Gillian Anderson), still cocooned in her tatty wedding dress,...

Versatile actor and writer often called upon to play toffs and bumbling clerics
The actor Jonathan Cecil, who has died of pneumonia aged 72 after suffering from emphysema, spent much of his career playing upper-class characters. That is hardly surprising since his father was Lord David Cecil, Goldsmiths' professor of English literature at Oxford University, and Jonathan's grandfather was the 4th Marquess of Salisbury. Although often typecast as a comic blueblood, there was infinitely more to Jonathan than that. He excelled in Chekhov and Shakespeare, and four times played Sir Andrew Aguecheek in Twelfth Night, always investing the character with a silvery pathos. In 1998 he had an outstanding season at Shakespeare's Globe, where he appeared in As You Like It and Thomas Middleton's A Mad World, My Masters, in which he played Sir Bounteous Progress – "gazing benignly", as John Gross wrote, "on almost everything, even his own undoing".

Sands Films, a London movie studio facing closure because of rising rents is seeking help from small investors
In the old laundry room skilled seamstresses are finely stitching costumes for this autumn's production of Anne Boleyn at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In the studio Keira Knightley is rehearsing for director Joe Wright's big-screen adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. In the basement of the Grade II-listed former granary facing the Thames a volunteer archivist pores over a unique reference collection of 19th century images, photographs and magazine clippings. Upstairs, crushed into a warren of rooms, lies an unparalleled collection of costumes used in films such as Little Dorrit, A Passage to India, Pride and Prejudice and The Young Victoria.

Perhaps, when the words Little Dorrit kept coming up during last night's Emmy Awards broadcast, you were all, "Little who?" Or maybe you filtered out the unfamiliar phrase altogether and have no idea what I'm talking about. But wait! There's a reason why the BBC-wgbh Charles Dickens adaptation picked up so many trophies, including Outstanding Miniseries plus the writing and directing awards in that field. I'm not even a Dickens fan like that, but my 19th-century-British-literature-obsessive girlfriend sure is, so I watched the miniseries when it aired this spring. The cast was one of those sprawling BBC ensembles, featuring memorable performances from actors I'd never seen before (Claire Foy, as debtor's daughter Amy Dorrit) as well as some familiar faces (Matthew "Mr. Darcy" Macfadyen as earnest hero Arthur Clennam, Andy "Gollum" Serkis as creepy villain Rigaud). And the plot -- all about wealth and class and massive finance-industry malfeasance --...

The 2009 Emmy Awards had a lot of surprises to unfold. Both old and new dominated the 61st Primetime Emmys. It was a big surprise when AMC's "Mad Men" won for the second year in a row in the drama series category and "30 Rock" won for the third consecutive year for comedy series category. Glenn Close got the lead actress award for FX's "Damages" and Bryan Cranston for AMC's "Breaking Bad" for the 2nd consecutive year. These two awards came as real shocks. There were big winners like PBS' "Little Dorrit", with seven awards, HBO's "Grey Gardens", which took six and NBC's "30 Rock", which won five. There were 20 various shows that took home the 28 Emmys handed out on the Sunday. The three hour long show was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris. He spiked jokes in between the musical n....

At the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles tonight the winners of the 61st annual Primetime Emmys were announced. While Neil Patrick Harris was certainly a better host than last year's quintet of reality show hosts, there weren't many spectacular moments that stood out during the broadcast. The same could be said of the Emmy winners; most of the shows and talent that won a statue were the ones that critics predicted. For example, AMC's Mad Men, last year's winner for Best Drama Series, won it again. So did 30 Rock for Best Comedy Series. To no one's surprise The Daily Show nabbed a couple more statues in the variety categories and The Amazing Race took its seventh consecutive Emmy, continuing its domination of reality program honors.

The ceremony of 61st Primetime Emmy Awards has just ended but some notable moments from the live event were captured. Neil Patrick Harris opening number and a dance sequence by several dancers from shows such as "Dancing with the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance" were among the highlighted moments apart from the winners revelation.
Harris, wearing white Tuxedo, worked the stage with a Broadway number of "Put Down That Remote". "30 Rock" and "Mad Men" managed to grab the coveted awards at the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. The former was hailed as the Best Comedy Series while the latter was the winner of Best Drama Series. With Family Guy the first animated show to be nominated as best comedy series in nearly half a century, things are looking a little different for this year's 61st annual Primetime Emmys. TV's biggest night - which CBS will broadcast live Sunday starting at 8 p.m. - is still expected to shower plenty of gold upon NBC's comedy 30 Rock and AMC's drama Mad Men, just like last year, but with How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris as the ceremony's first-time host after his stellar turn emceeing June's Tony Awards, the evening should also benefit from some categories starring new contenders.

Tina Fey's NBC series "30 Rock" took home its third trophy for best comedy, but the star/writer/executive producer said that having more nominees in the category this year made for "a more surprising and exciting night." She also refused to believe the Web chatter that her show was the front-runner: "The Internet is always wrong." Meanwhile, she said her dream guest star is Meryl Streep, who could play a love interest for Alec Baldwin's Jack Donaghy. Remembering that the two are doing just that in the upcoming film "It's Complicated," Fey changed her mind, saying Streep maybe could play Grizz Chapman's love interest. But Fey added: "We've been lucky to have so many guest stars, but this year we're really trying to focus on the (regular group of) characters."

Justin Timberlake has made new history at 2009 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, the TV Academy's walk-up to the Primetime Emmy Awards. At the event, which was held on Saturday, September 12 at Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, the singer/actor took home Guest Actor award in Comedy Series category for his guest appearance in "Saturday Night Live", making him the first host of the show who wins award at the event.

Tina Fey added another Emmy to her collection, this time for her hugely popular impersonation of former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
Surprisingly, though, PBS' miniseries "Little Dorrit" emerged as the top winner during Saturday's Creative Arts Emmy Awards, where Andrew Davies' adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic collected four awards, the most of any program.
Overall, there isn't a clear front-runner going into Sunday's Primetime Emmys, with seven programs -- including HBO's heavily nominated "Grey Gardens" and "Generation Kill," Fox's "American Idol" and ABC's canceled dramedy "Pushing Daisies" -- nabbing three Creative Emmys apiece.
It was business as usual in the network tally Saturday, when HBO led the pack with 16 statuettes, followed by NBC with 11 wins and ABC and Fox with 8.
On the heels of one of its most-talked about seasons, NBC's venerable sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live" won both acting comedy awards.

It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
MacFarlane's Family Guy was also nominated for best comedy series, the first time an animated show has cracked that category since The Flintstones in 1961. Two years ago MacFarlane decided to pull his show from contention in the animated series category to have it considered for best comedy.
Mad Men, the drama about the advertising world in the sixties, picked up 16 nominations in the drama categories, including a best actor nod for Jon Hamm. Hamm is also nominated as...

Freema Agyeman, who debuted on the UK's latest genre series, Survivors, on November 23 said, “I couldn’t have wished for a better start to my career than Doctor Who. It was like a rocket that blasted me up and as a consequence I have all these opportunities presented to me. It feels like it would be rude to say no.”
The 29-year-old told the London Telegraph that she plays Jenny Collins, “a teacher trying to escape a population-killing virus in a six-part remake of the 1970s cult drama.” Survivors.
“Jenny is bright and capable but in this situation she is overwhelmed,” she described. “Looking after her sick flatmate gives her a purpose to get through the situation. The whole thing is about trying to find hope.”
“Doctor Who was a good warm-up,” Agyeman admitted. “You’d be running around on the edge of cliff, chased by someone holding a fake...

London -- U.K. studio facilities behemoth Pinewood Shepperton posted solid interims despite the global economic downturn, but warned that the ongoing SAG dispute could have a major impact on fortunes for the group in the months to come.
Pinewood Shepperton, listed on the stock exchange here, told markets that its pretax profits rose to 3.8 million pounds ($7 million) for the six months ending June 30, up from 2.9 million pounds from the same period in 2007.
Revenue at the group, which owns and operates both the Pinewood and Shepperton studio complexes on the outskirts of London as well as Teddington Studios, hit 21.7 million pounds ($39.8 million) in the first half, up from 18.3 million pounds in 2007.
The uptick means shareholders enjoy a 5% increase in the group's interim dividend and can rest easy knowing that the board secured a five-year banking facility of? 70 million pounds ($128 million) in August to fuel its expansion ambitions.
