Sex & Nudity

  • Thelma (Cassie Barasch) spies on her older brother taking boudoir photos of a girlfriend; only faces are clear. He shows Thelma the prints; they are not explicit.
  • A young girl lifts her dress for a moment; we see she has hidden a plot-relevant object in her panties.
  • Parents' conversations imply concern that the disappearance of a girl indicates the presence of a sexual predator.
  • A married man is living with another woman. Two young girls see the couple having sex in the dunes (nothing explicit is shown) and take photos. The girls discuss people "doing it" with some disgust. One mentions she has seen it on cable TV.
  • A woman removes her top. We briefly see her breasts from the side.

Violence & Gore

  • We see violent content that Thelma watches on TV: news reports of dismembered bodies, a war movie with prolific shooting, and a drama showing one man knocking another unconscious with a board to the head .
  • The two girls scuffle.
  • A person is shot, and a bloodstain is seen on their clothes.

Profanity

  • Infrequent: Thelma is called a b*tch once. S*O*B* is used a couple of times, bullsh*t, a handful of religious usages. A man is referred to as a "black bastard."

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A young girl takes a swig of liquor from a bottle; she doesn't like it.
  • A woman responds to a stressful situation by drinking liquor several times, and we see her drunk once. No smoking or drugs that I recall.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Nine-year-old Thelma finds a handgun and threatens someone with it repeatedly.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Thelma shoots Elizabeth (Ellie Raab) with a handgun several times. We see blood on Elizabeth's arm, and she drifts out to sea. Elizabeth is missing and eventually presumed dead. Her bloody clothes and the gun are found buried in the sand.
  • An unarmed man attempting to flee and innocent of the crime for which he is being chased, is shot and killed by police. The blast knocks him onto a car, cracking the windshield and leaving a huge bloody stain. The man's girlfriend is in the car. His body is shown on the ground, covered and at a distance, thus not grotesque.
