Diverse, awe-inspiring and memorable treasures that have sadly fallen off the radar
The noughties were a tough decade for film music fans. Not only was there the unprecedented loss of four great masters in the form of Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Michael Kamen and Basil Poledouris; the nature of the industry itself began to go through some seismic changes, not all of them for the better.
With the art of film scoring becoming ever more processed, driven increasingly by ghost writers, electronic augmentation and temp tracks, prospects looked bleak. However, this shouldn’t shield the fact that there were some blindingly brilliant scores composed during this period. Here’s but a small sampling of them.

Marvel Comics
The fact that the X-Men franchise focuses on a team of heroes – including the immortal Wolverine and the mind-reading genius Professor X – means that these movies always need several strong villainous characters to match. At the very least, each film needs to be a tough-to-beat big bad (for the brainy X-Men to worry about) and a collection of formidable henchmen (to fight everyone else).
As the franchise has been going for 16 years, a lot of the most famous villains from the X-Men comics have already made it to the big screen. Audiences have seen multiple Magnetos and William Strykers by this stage, as well as memorable takes on Bolivar Trask, The Sentinels, Sebastian Shaw and The Hellfire Club.
So, in order to keep the franchise going for another 16 years, Bryan Singer and his 20th Century Fox cohorts will have to delve deeper into comic book lore.

What an interesting situation Hans Zimmer was put in when he was asked to do the music for Batman v Superman. This was the guy who shaped the tone for The Dark Knight Trilogy (along with James Newton Howard for the first film), as well as Man Of Steel with his epic and fitting scores. However, with Batman v Superman he was facing a bit of a conundrum. Sure, since BvS takes place within the same universe as Man Of Steel, it makes sense that he'd come back to do the music. But what about Batman? This Batman is a very different one than what Nolan brought us with Christian Bale, and as such, how weird would it be that Zimmer would be responsible for bringing themes to two completely separate iterations of the same character?
Instead of doing that, Zimmer decided to bring on composer Junkie Xl to assist him with the film,...

Coming to theaters in two weeks is director Ed Zwick’s riveting Pawn Sacrifice.
It’s the story of Bobby Fischer, America’s foremost chess player, who faced the reigning champion, Boris Spassky of Russia, in a series of matches that held the world spellbound.
For fans of 1972’s “Match of the Century,” the film is everything you’re hoping for. Zwick’s movie is flawless right down to the re-enactment of the 1971 interview with Dick Cavett.
Bobby Fischer first makes waves in the elite world of chess as a 6-year-old whiz-kid from Brooklyn famous for his laser-like concentration and ability to dominate all challengers. By his teens, the boy wonder has gone from chess savant to international grandmaster, but his meteoric rise is punctuated by unpredictable personal behavior and escalating demands that raise hackles in the conservative chess establishment.

Judd Apatow is the maestro of the dick joke, the current reigning king of gross-out humor, and the guy who brought you all those hey-bro-let’s-get-drunk-and-get-laid movies. But Apatow’s secret weapon, and the likely reason for his broad appeal, is that he’s admittedly a family-values guy at heart. From The 40-Year-Old Virgin to This Is 40, the binge drinking and drug use and sexcapades in Apatow films always wind up leading to monogamy, long-term commitment, and reinforcement of American social norms.
So it makes for an interesting collision of creative talents – and personal values – when the similarly raunchy but more deeply subversive comic Amy Schumer teams up with Apatow in Trainwreck. Schumer writes and stars in the film, which focuses on a thirty-something journalist and dedicated wild child also named Amy. Amy drinks hard, parties harder, and hops constantly from one new sexual encounter to another, following the...

Trainwreck
Written by Amy Schumer
Directed by Judd Apatow
U.S., 2015
Amy Schumer already cemented her place on my year’s favorite entertainment list when she managed to loosely remake 12 Angry Men for the fourth episode of Inside Amy Schumer, but not satisfied with owning television, Schumer decides to revive the romantic comedy for 2015. Lazy writing has cursed the genre for much of the last few decades and studios have responded in kind by not pursuing that market with the gusto they used to. A film this funny and engaging might change minds at some studios because Trainwreck is a very good romantic comedy.
As soon as the film opens it’s clear that the story will not be hitting the same beats that audiences are used to. Schumer eschews traditional romantic comedy dynamics by opening with Gordon (Colin Quinn) trying to instill a paralytic fear against monogamy in his young daughters.

The 2014 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards It's hard to believe I've been doing my own brand of "awards" for seven years now. Perhaps because film awards seem to have grown increasingly irrelevant, but when you watch as many movies as I do per year it is nice to sit back and remember the finer moments of the past year, especially when we're stuck in the doldrums of the early year releases, dealing with the likes of Jupiter Ascending, Taken 3, Blackhat and Seventh Son. So, as we are now only a few weeks away from the 87th Annual Academy Awards, it's time to hand out the 2014 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards, looking back on a year that turned out to be much better than it initially appeared it may be. A hard question I'm trying to answer is just what kind of year in movies was 2014c Like previous years, blockbusters came and went.

Following three TV movies over the past decade or so, TNT decided a while back to turn its "The Librarian" franchise into a regular TV series. Now the results can be seen in a new full-length trailer for "The Librarians" released today by the network.
While Noah Wyle led the charge in the telemovies, here he takes a back seat and will pop in and out in a recurring role as the enigmatic supervisor of a new group of characters who will take on the task of looking for artifacts with mythical powers around the globe.
Said new faces include the likes of Rebecca Romijn ("X-Men"), Emmy winning comedian John Laroquette, Christian Kane ("Angel"), Lindy Booth ("Dawn of the Dead") and Australian soap star John Kim. Look out for a Bruce Campbell cameo too in the trailer, whilst the likes of Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin will pop up in the show.

All I could picture as the closing credits began for "Maleficent," the big-budget fantasy picture that Walt Disney Studios is releasing on Friday, was a whole generation of women explaining how deeply and permanently broken their view of men was by Angelina Jolie when they were just princess-crazy little girls. It is safe to say I will not be taking my kids to see "Maleficent," a film that is so swollen with psycho-sexual subtext that I felt like I was watching a true hijacking of the mainstream. But… by who? Robert Stromberg, who directed the film, is a production designer who has been involved in creating some of the richest, most detailed fantasy worlds on film over the last decade, and who worked in visual effects for 20 years before that, and he certainly brings that skill set to bear on how he establishes a sense of time and place in "Maleficent.

There's always one day during the Sdcc when you just shake your head, laugh, and say, "This schedule is ridiculous." Saturday, July 20th, is shaping up to be that day this year.
Horror fans will have a lot of choices to make as the "Bates Motel" panel battles the one-two punch of Godzilla and Seventh Son. Later in the day you'll be faced with choosing to learn more about "True Blood," Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, or "Being Human." Right now 20th Century Fox's presentation that runs at the same time remains "To Be Announced," but once details are revealed, we'll provide an update.
Other panels vying for your attention throughout the day are "The Originals," "Grimm," I, Frankenstein teamed with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (that combination should make for some interesting audience reactions), a look at gameplay from Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One, more games, comics,...

It's not an Oscar moment - I should've remembered to post this when the Golden Globes were handed out - but it's still an awards moment worth sharing, and one that I'm not sure everyone is aware of. In short, Ving Rhames won a Golden Globe award in 1998 for Best Actor in a TV Mminiseries for his performance in HBO's Don King: Only in America. At the ceremony, Rhames, in tears over his win, called fellow nominee Jack Lemmon (nominated for 12 Angry Men as Juror #8) to the stage. And after Lemmon joined him, Rhames said, "I feel that being an artist is about giving, and I'd like to give this to you," and handed his Golden Globe trophy to Lemmon, who was...

The definition of a slasher film varies depending on who you ask, but in general, it contains several specific traits that feed into the genre’s formula. Author Vera Dika rather strictly defines the sub-genre in her book Games of Terror by only including films made between 1978 and 1984. In other words, she saw it as a movement. When someone describes Brick, they don’t define it as a noir, but instead neo-noir . In other words, it’s a modern motion picture that prominently utilizes elements of film noir, but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media that were absent in those from the 1940s and 1950s. So does one consider Scream a slasher film or a neo-slasher, or simply put, a modern slasher?
Some consider Thirteen Women to be the earliest slasher – released all the way back in 1932. Personally I think that is rubbish. Thirteen Women is more like Desperate Housewives on sedatives.

Chicago – This is usually the time of year where we bemoan the months that have just passed and talk about the quality to come in the Fall. The fact is that if the upcoming season is half-as-good as the previous three, 2011 is going to be the best year in film in ages. It’s been a Very strong year at the cinema and there’s every indication that we ain’t seen nothing yet.
There have been many years where it has been honestly difficult to produce a list of twenty films (a top ten and ten runner-ups) for which we feel you should mark your calendar and buy tickets in advance. This year is the opposite. Even with some significant help by not including flicks we’ve already seen, it was Still tough to narrow it down to twenty. And the fact is that we’re missing many of...

One chaotic round of updates coming up.
Jane Espenson has announced the new project she has been working on with Alessandra Torresani, Brad Bell (Cheeks) and Sean Hemeon, in an interview with CliqueClack. Yes, it's Husbands, a web series about "two guys, a newly dating couple, who celebrate a new marriage equality law in Vegas and wake up married." A couple of snippets from the interview:
Km: What do you hope to become of Husbands in the long run? If it simply stays as a free series on the web, will that satisfy not only you but the actors?
Je: Honestly, I would love to see Husbands turn into a network television show. I’m loving the freedom that we’re enjoying as we put it together ourselves, but there’s something about it that feels so accessible — it’s Ab Fab, Dharma and Greg, Will and Grace … it feels...

The SyFy Channel has officially announced their plans for Comic-Con 2011. The only shows I watch these days at the SyFy Channel include Being Human and Ghost Hunters, which unfortunately won't even be there this year. At least it's not in the schedule below. I also just started watching Wearhouse 13 which turned out to be a pretty good show.
Which of the panels will you be attending from the SyFy Channel this year?
Here's the full announcement with all of the details:
In continuing with its yearly tradition of delivering the ultimate fan experience at Comic-Con – and winding down the convention with the hottest party of the entire weekend – Syfy has unveiled its plans for participation at Comic-Con 2011.
As in years past, a multitude of talent from Syfy’s hottest series will participate in interactive panels, where fans can get their burning questions answered and get all the behind-the-scenes secrets on their favorite shows!

Scream 4
Opens: April 15th 2011
Cast: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Mary McDonnell, Emma Roberts Director: Wes Craven
Summary: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with family and friends, but it also brings about the return of Ghostface which puts the whole town in danger.
Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.
Yet the "Scream" series itself never could quite capture that glory again. By the time the...

My Idiot Brother
Opens: 2011
Cast: Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan
Director: Jesse Peretz
Summary: Ned is a well-meaning idealist just released from prison for dealing cannabis. In succession, he disrupts the lives and homes of his three sisters: a career-driven journalist about to get her big break; a bisexual hipster whose lies are disrupting her relationship; and a married mother who hasn't noticed that her marriage is falling apart.
Analysis: Scoring a good response over the weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, this broad light comedy with a sweet heart charmed the pants off The Weinstein Company to the tune of around $6 million for distribution rights. That covers most of its sub-$10 million budget, a number that it could potentially outgross by several factors if the good-natured tone hinted at in the reviews were correct. If anything, the few negatives tended to be because this...

I've got a long list of updates and rumors for you today and perhaps the most interesting of which comes courtesy of Pajiba, which has it from a source that Quentin Tarantino is either "being discussed or already attached as the future director of The Shadow." Should this rumor prove true it would also mean Tarantino would serve as co-writer.
Sam Raimi and David Slade (30 Days of Night, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) had previously been attached to direct the movie, based on a crime fighting vigilante who began popping up in serial radio programs and magazines in the 1930s. Alec Baldwin starred in the most recent film adaptation, a 1994 release directed by Russell Mulcahy (Resident Evil: Extinction).
It should be noted that an official Tarantino representative has told MTV News there is no truth to the story, but this type of pulp crime story sounds like it would be right down his alley.

Every seven years, 30 of the world’s most deadly assassins take over a random city and compete for a ten million dollar prize. The rules are simple. The contestants have twenty-four hours to be the sole survivor, if not a tracking device implanted in their abdomen will detonate. Let the game begin.
If you’re a fan of action blockbusters like Transporter or Crank than The Tournament should excite you. The film is ninety minutes of explosions, slow-motion, 300-style fight sequences, and shoot-em-up action. But what really sets The Tournament apart from most films in this genre is the gratuitous gore, hence the appeal to fright fans. There are plenty of exploding heads/dismemberments and because the tournament takes place in a random city, there is no shortage of civilian casualties. The body count is high and unlike cartoonish films like Transformers, the mayhem is bloody and visceral.
But if you’re like me,...

I had not heard about the movie The Tournament until this weekend. That's in spite of it featuring some names you know, like Ving Rhames, Robert Carlyle, and Kelly Hu from X-Men. The new trailer is out, and it's got blenty of action, including what I'm guessing has to be an effects shot involving a double-decker bus.
I don't usually expect much out of these movies that in any way feature a billionaire entertaining himself and his wealthy friends by running a tournament to the death, but I did kind of enjoy Death Race last year, so I'm open to giving this one a shot. Before you watch the trailer - not that it's ambiguous in any way - please enjoy the synopsis:
"Every seventh year in a small English village arranged a special tournament called The Tournament. Nobody knows anything about it. Nobody will ever get to know anything.
