Wait - what?! They're filming a secret film in Cannes, about Cannes, right now? Apparently it is indeed true. I was sent a link last week to an article on Forbes talking about how Alec Baldwin, who appears in Woody Allen's To Rome with Love (not premiering here), will be in town filming a movie the entire time he's here. Filmmaker James Toback (of Fingers, Love & Money, The Big Bang, Black and White, Tyson) is directing it, he "has an idea", and it's supposedly "a feature or a mocumentary about... the Cannes Film Festival." Very, very interesting. Baldwin has already been spotted in town with Toback, so it's all real. It's happening. The article on Forbes doesn't seem to have many extra details, as they go on to say that it's a "secret" film being shot in Cannes. "The film crew will be hitting all the big parties and events,...

Series finale of 'Hannah Montana' airs this Sunday.

It's hard to believe that after Sunday's final episode of "Hannah Montana," Miley Cyrus will officially leave her alter ego behind. After four seasons, 98 episodes, a full-length movie and a 3-D concert film, Cyrus will be hanging up her blond wig for good.
As the show wraps up, it begs the question: What's next for the teen queen? Well, Cyrus, 18, seems to be putting recent tabloid troubles behind her and concentrating on her very busy movie career. She has several flicks in the works, including "Lol," in which she stars alongside Demi Moore and "Twilight" star Ashley Greene.
"Miley is a phenomenon — she's accomplished so much in the movie, TV and music worlds that it's not surprising how much attention was attracted during filming," co-star Greene said. "But we're both...

Back in November, Rock Mafia's Tim James revealed to MTV News that plans were being formed to turn the sexy clip for their tune "The Big Bang" into an even-sexier movie starring its video girl, Miley Cyrus. Now it seems the project is well under way.
E! News reports that Miley's mom, Tish Cyrus, has been meeting with Suzanne Todd — a producer on films such as "Alice in Wonderland," the "Austin Powers" films and "Memento" — to turn the music video into a full-length feature. Sources tell the website Miley is looking to reprise her role to pick up where her ghostly character left off. There's no word yet if Kevin Zegers will return to the project.

Every time we run a story about one of the Wizard of Oz films that are in development, the same question comes up: where's Wicked? The Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West told the story of Oz from the perspective of the witch of the title, then spawned a tremendously successful stage musical, and there have been rumors of a film for several years. But this may not be quite what you're expecting. This version of Wicked, developed by Salma Hayek's company Ventanarosa Productions, is based on the novel, rather than the musical, and will see life as an ABC miniseries. Variety [1] says Erik Jendreson (Band of Brothers, Otis, upcoming film The Big Bang) is scripting, with an eye toward an eight-hour miniseries. (The type of thing, it's worth seeing, that we don't often see any more from the major networks.

I was browsing around some of my posts on the previous season of Doctor Who, Matt Smith’s first series, and I was suddenly reminded that the end of “The Big Bang” appeared to be promising us this for the Christmas special: An Egyptian goddess loose on the Orient Express. In space... Don’t worry about a thing, Your Majesty -- we’re on our way. That was the Doctor on the phone in the Tardis the last time we saw him*. I called it a cheeky tease back then, and wondered if it was Liz Ten on the other end of the line. And it was all completely forgotten. Steven Moffat is such a bastard. *Okay, not quite the last time. The Doctor also appeared in The Sarah Jane Adventures this autumn, in an episode called “Death of the Doctor,” which quite clearly takes place almost immediately before “A Christmas Carol.

"Keep the faith. Stay off the naughtiness."
With charm oozing from its every pore, the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas special did not take long to win me over and remind me that my life is substantially happier with new stories of The Doctor, Amy, and the Tardis from the mind of Steven Moffat. Perhaps I was completely invested at the sight of that pre-credits honeymoon suite gag that gave us a hint of the role play that young lovers and newlyweds Amy and Rory might now share as a result of their previous adventures, with her in her old bobby outfit and Rory in that Roman centurion outfit that symbolizes his willingness to patiently wait millennia in order to protect her. If it was not that, then I certainly was energized a few minutes later when the Doctor tumbled out of that chimney on Christmas Eve and immediately took control of...

Just a short post, as I have presents to attend to. Don't read this if you haven't seen it in the Us though. Come back after, by all means!
The 'Doctor Who' Christmas special is a tradition in my house now - I want to watch it in peace and quiet, Mum falls asleep five minutes in and the snoring is terrible, my brothers - though they have every right to - natter through the whole thing, the dogs won't sit still and I get frustrated because I don't have absolute silence.
This year was different - Mum simply went upstairs for a nap and the dogs were pleasantly quiet, one of my brothers didn't watch because he had a lovely new Wii game and that meant the other one had nobody to talk to. This may sound like a rather miserable Christmas affair to you. To me,...

Bruce Drinkwater, Professor of Ultrasonics at the University of Bristol, thinks a real-life sonic screwdriver is possible. From a press release: Ultrasonic engineers at Bristol University and The Big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair are uncovering how a real life version of the fictional screwdriver - which uses sonic technology to open locks and undo screws - could be created. Professor of Ultrasonics, Bruce Drinkwater, who is working with The Big Bang to inspire young scientists of the future, says the answer lies in ultrasonic sound waves. By operating the waves at frequencies way beyond the realms of human hearing, they can be used to apply forces to objects.

Welcome to the Gay Globes – er, sorry Golden Globes. With all the gay-themed and gay-favorite nominees this year, you can see how a gal might get confusion. The nominations were announced this morning and the list includes best picture nods for Black Swan and The Kids Are All Right, in drama and comedy respectively.
Both films received four nominations each including a pair of nods for their actresses, with Annette Bening and Julianne Moore for best actress in a comedy and Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis for best actress and supporting actress in a drama. So, to summarize, make out with a lady on screen this year and have a good chance of touching a Globe – er, sorry Golden Globe. If you were doing it right on screen I’m sure hoping you rounded second already.
The Golden Globe nominations, with their recognition of both movies and TV, are always a mixed bag.

I was rather skeptical when it was announced that Matt Smith was taking over the role of Doctor Who for the new incarnation's fifth season, but I was pleasantly surprised by his abilities from the very first episode. Each new Doctor faces a massive challenge stepping into a role that has been around since the early 1960s, and is moreover a cultural icon in a sense that nearly reinvents the term, but Smith had the further hurdle of following David Tennant, and he had reinvigorated the franchise to a degree that many might have thought impossible.
The first episode of the season is among the best efforts of the new foray into the Doctor Who series (yes, it's hard to make sense of this being the fifth season of Doctor Who), with the new Doctor meeting his new companion, but as a young girl. Not only a solid story on its own,...

If you're a fan of Doctor Who, you're well aware of his handy tool, the Sonic Screwdriver.
In our recent Specialty Items Holiday Geek Gift Guide, we featured a couple of these screwdrivers...though they were only of the toy variety for fan and collector amusement. Now, there's word that living breathing scientists out there are actually working on the technologies to create a real Sonic Screwdriver.
The screwdriver, for those who don't know, is the ultimate tool, used mainly to fix pretty much anything and get past all types of locks, both electric and mechanical.
The hope is to develop a tool that emits incredibly powerful ultrasonic sound waves that will form something resembling a miniature tornado, allowing users to move and manipulate objects using the waves.

Narcissist that I am, I sometimes go back to read my past reviews on the Shadowlocked website. I was just checking out the one for The Big Bang, in which I was foolishly attempting to make out that I'd found the ability to travel back in time to meet my five-year-old-self.
As you do.
Anyway, the ham-fisted point that I was trying to make was that Doctor Who is chiefly for kids. Although it enjoys a sizeable adult following, kids especially love Who. What's great about this is that they take it at face value, ignore the shortcomings and get caught up in the different fantasy worlds, scenarios and monsters. A good example of this approach is season 17 adventure The Creature From The Pit.
The difference between adults' reactions and kids' reactions to Pit is bigger than Mick Jagger's gob. To a child, Pit is an atmospheric fantasy adventure...

The hero of Dr. Who has the ability to transform and recreate himself many times over. This is an ability shared by the Dr. Who franchise in general, which has allowed the BBC to continue producing new episodes, despite the fact that the character first debuted in 1963. The modern revival of Dr. Who, which began in 2004, carries on the tradition of constantly revamping the show and replacing the actor who portrays the enigmatic hero.
For those unfamiliar with the series, it depicts the adventures of a time-traveling alien genius who uses his vast intellect to defend the innocent against dangerous monsters and space invaders. The unnamed hero travels under the alias of “the Doctor.” Doctor who, you ask? No one knows. Hence, the title of the show.

The relatively young distribution arm of Tribeca Enterprises, Tribeca Film, just grabbed the Us rights to The Big Bang Club in what may prove to be it’s biggest acquisition to date. Tribeca will be theatrically releasing the film, which had it’s world premiere at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, in the second quarter of 2011, as well as on video-on-demand, and other platforms. The character-driven drama was written and directed by South African Steven Silver, who exec-produced Shake Hands With The Devil and another 2010 Tiff premiere, Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie. Gist: With a B-list cast of Ryan Phillippe, Malin Akerman, Taylor Kitsch, Neels Van Jaarsveld and Frank Rautenbach, The Bang Bang Club was the name given to four young photographers, Greg Marinovich, Kevin Carter, Ken Oosterbroek and Joao Silva, whose photographs captured the final bloody days of white rule in South Africa and the final demise of apartheid.

We're a little over a month away from the return of the Doctor, Amy, and Rory, and the wait has been long enough already. When "The Big Bang" happened in May, I don't think any of us realized just how much we'd be missing the new Tardis travelers over the break. Here's a hint: we miss them a lot.
The Christmas special, which will mark the return of the group, is slated to air on Christmas Day, December 25 (just in case you didn't know). The episode, the first Christmas special penned by new showrunner Steven Moffat and the first to feature new Doctor Matt Smith, will undoubtedly be markedly different from previous specials that have become a staple of the program since its reboot in 2005. After all, this one's based on Dickens.

Rock Mafia's debut single "The Big Bang", which features Miley Cyrus on its upcoming music video, has come out for listening pleasure. It's a drum-driven song and will have its anticipated video debuted next month on November 1.
Beside having Miley, "The Big Bang" music video will also see Kevin Zegers playing opposite the Disney star. In a sneak peek unveiled earlier this month, Miley is involved in a car crash, and Kevin who plays a parking attendant witnesses the accident.
In addition to the horrific scene of car crash, the video will still explore romance between the two characters. Of the make-out scene he did with Miley, Kevin admitted it was "weird" because they each had their real-life love interests on set that day. "She's ... just a beautiful young woman sort of roaming around," he praised her. "It's definitely not raunchy in any way."...
