Breaking In isn't your classic caper, but it's the only genre I can fathom this type of film to be, as it revolves around an aging veteran safe-cracker and his young protégé who's learning the ropes and making scores of cash in the process. I don't believe this film made much of a splash in theaters in 1989, as it is unremarkable with an OK cast, including an aging Burt Reynolds, who is actually quite funny and effective, sans the cosmetic surgery. He plays Ernie perfectly, who mentors the young Mike and warns him of the dangers of becoming too greedy, which is exactly what happens to him, although perhaps too predictably might I add. Burt Reynolds makes this film interesting, especially the way he scolds young Mike and downplays his own lifestyle in the process; it seems he respects his profession more than his young partner, played by an average Casey Siemaszko, who does an OK job, but pales in comparison to Reynolds.

Parts of Breaking In which didn't work for me was right after Ernie scolds Mike for spending too fast, then getting fired from his job, then basically giving the Mike an ultimatum, a few scenes later they're great pals again, and it lacked continuity for me. Sheila Kelley was beyond annoying and slowed this film down a bit, especially that grating voice.

Overall, Breaking In has some quality scenes, mainly with Ernie and Mike's desire to steal from local establishments, their methods used, and how each live with their money.
