Alison Maclean is not a prolific filmmaker. While her resume is littered with TV (Sex and the City, The Tudors), music videos (Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”) and short films (the superb domestic horror Kitchen Sink, and a segment in Subway Tales), films are few and far between. Her third feature is The Rehearsal and if its release feels awfully quiet then you can probably thank the near 20-year gap between feature projects and her return to her native New Zealand with a thorny film about tricky subject matter and written with a sense of ambiguous mystery.
My knowledge of New Zealand cinema is by far not as thorough as Australian film, but Maclean’s Crush is perhaps my favourite from there that isn’t Heavenly Creatures or The Piano. It is a film rife for rediscovery, not least of all for the delicious performance by Marcia Gay Harden...

Transformers: The Last Knight is a tiresome mix of self-aware silliness and Budweiser-branded apocalypse porn, but compared to Michael Bay’s previous Hasbrosploitations, at least this one is – dare I say – momentarily fun? Not enough to avoid becoming a dizzy mecha-mess of metallic chaos, mind you. Let’s be realistic. Early predictions of a 3:20 length only missed by about 50-or-so minutes, sticking to the franchise’s boorish signatures. First it’s men against bots, then bots against bots, then Medieval bots against newer bots, then Earth against Cybertron (like, the planets themselves) – be still, my swirling head. Focus on the blatant Suicide Squad ripoff and dogpiled sexual humor. Maybe that will distract from from the distractions themselves.
If you’re keeping tabs on Transformers continuity, The Last Knight is where it all ties together (or, kinda tries). Autobots and Decepticons are now outlaws. National governments assemble anti-robot agency branches...

We’re not huge fans of the word “detox” here at Health. Our bodies are able to remove toxins on their own naturally, and they don’t need additional help from a special diet or juice fast to do so. That said, when goop (Gwyneth Paltrow‘s lifestyle website) published its annual detox plan earlier this month, my coworker, Alison, and I were intrigued. After a December diet that mostly consisted of cheese plates and sugar cookies, the idea of hitting reset on our healthy eating habits sounded pretty great.

One of the overlooked outcomes of last week’s election is the growth of the marijuana legalization movement. Buying, possessing and using the stuff is going to be legal for adults in Massachusetts, Nevada, California and Maine – as it is now in Colorado, Alaska, Washington State, Washington D.C., and Oregon. Over 20 percent of Americans reside in states where such use by adults is legal. In over half of these United States, weed is kosher for medicinal use.
First Fun Fact: A few years ago, the Heeb Magazine website informed us that, properly handled, cannabis is indeed kosher. That should popularize the Passover herb plate.
Second Fun Fact: If not for weed, we might not have our direct sales comic book distribution system. Back in the mid-60s, we started seeing retail outlets called “head shops” pop up all over this great nation. These places were sort of like today...

Last Thursday, the Lgbt Community Center here in Manhattan (a.k.a. The Center) had its opening reception for their exhibit Wendel’s World: Gay Life in the 1980s. For those of you that don’t know, Wendel was a comic that ran in The Advocate throughout the 1980s created and drawn exclusively by the underground comix pioneer, Howard Cruse.
The reception was filled people who have been passionate fans of Howard’s for decades, as well as some newcomers. The walls of the fourth floor of The Center were decked out in framed Wendel pages including one of my favorites where Wendel’s good friend Sterno has fun at his place with Cyril. Other notable Lgbt cartoonists such as Ivan Velez and Jennifer Camper were in attendance, as well as Howard’s husband Eddie Sedarbaum. They also had wine and cheese which isn’t a reason to go to these sort out things,...

Last year, the top twelve films tallied a mere $79.9 million over the final weekend in October. It was the sixth worst weekend of 2014. Looking over the list of newcomers hitting theaters this weekend*Burnt, Our Brand is Crisis and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse*and the lackluster returns of last week's new releases, it appears this weekend's top twelve will be even worse by about $10 million. Despite four new wide releases last weekend, none of them were able to crack the top three. The Martian has taken the #1 spot three out of the last four weekends, returning to the top position last weekend after briefly ceding to Sony's Goosebumps the week prior. Both films have shown small, weekend-to-weekend drops and it appears they'll be jockeying for first and second place again. Managing to play to two different audiences, both films should drop in the 33% range for weekend's just north of $10 million.

Horror filmmakers have a special fondness for shedding teenage blood.
After all, teens are horror's primary audience, so it's especially frightening -- and cathartic -- to see teens like themselves targeted by deadly evil, often just for behaving like normal adolescents. In the last four decades, movies about teens targeted by slashers have become the mainstay of movie horror.
With horror flick "Kitchen Sink" arriving in theaters soon, it's worth looking back at some of the most celebrated teen horror movies of all time. Just remember, don't separate from the group, and don't have sex.

I am a fan of Larry Cohen. From Black Caesar, Hell Up in Harlem, the It’s Alive series, and Q: The Winged Serpent, the man has developed a diverse body of work, and most of it is at least worth watching. Somehow, Gold Told Me To had eluded me up until Blue Underground released it to Blu-ray. This was not at all what I expected it to be, and may have become one of my favorite Cohen films. Fans of offbeat cinema should take note, this is one of this year’s Blu-rays that you’re not going to want to miss. I say “offbeat” because from the outside looking in, this just looks like your typical New York City thriller, where people are being terrorized by an unknown murderer. In reality, this is a Sci-Fi tale at its very core, and ventures into even stranger territory before it’s all over.

After Arthur Christmas and now this, Jim Broadbent will have to be careful he doesn’t end up typecast as Santa Claus (coming in 2016: Mike Leigh’s Kitchen Sink Santa!). He seems happy to fill out the red suit and beard for Get Santa, though, and the trailer is now online. Looking for all the world like Miracle On 34th Street given a more cynical British twist, Get Santa is set a few days before Christmas and finds the jolly figure in a bit of a bind. See, Santa was test-driving his brand new sleigh when he crashed in London. Now the reindeer are wandering through the city and the man himself has ended up in a garden shed, where he’s discovered by 9 year-old Tom (Kit Connor).Being a helpful sort, Tom doesn’t immediately hold him for ransom and demand all the toys in the world, but...

Could January 2015 be the best January ever? January is traditionally the dump month, when last minute Oscar hopefuls gain steam and studios fill multiplex screens with movies they'd prefer not to have on their permanent records. But that's all changing thanks to an overloaded release schedule. Today, if a studio has a good movie, it makes more sense to put it out when someone has time to actually see it then stack on top of industry-approved seasonal dates. A radical practice. Take "Black Sea," a submarine thriller starring Jude Law. Based on the first trailer, it's a claustrophobic ticking clock drama with a little bit of pulp ("How much Nazi gold is in that sub?" "$182 million!") and a lotta bit of Scottish accents. It's not bombastic enough to go toe-to-toe with the "Avengers 2," nor does it have the inherent prestige factor to duke it out with Harvey Weinstein during the October-through-December window.

To categorise an entire country’s cinematic output in a single article is a seemingly impossible task, and one that will likely leave a cavalcade of audiences wondering where their favourite releases are located.

It has been a rather long, almost interminable wait, but finally, Duane Hopkins’ sophomore feature will finally be making its world premiere debut at the Venice Film Festival. A visually engulfing multi-pov portrait that tapped into the motivations and behaviors of a teenage wasteland, while the nouveau British cinematic wave Cannes’ Critics’ Week selected Better Things showcased Hopkins’ skill set, the cloud formations were perhaps layers of blue, but the actual tone of the film was shades of dark sky grey. Calling his debut film “bleak” is an understatement.

Australians will soon be able to watch New Zealand films online, for a price.
The New Zealand Film Commission has just launched Nzfc Films On Demand, an online streaming service which initially offers 13 features including Vigil, The Navigator, Kitchen Sink, The Six Dollar Fifty Man, Night Shift and The Singing Trophy, and six shorts.
The plan is to make the service available to Australia and other countries and to expand the menu to eventually include all films co-funded by the Nzfc.
.We will be adding Australia very soon - in fact, our intention was to launch with Nz and Australia but we realised a few days before the launch that Australians using the service would automatically receive a Gst receipt,. Nzfc marketing manager Jasmin McSweeney tells If.
.We are creating a non-gst receipt and once this work is completed, Australia will be added, hopefully very soon, though I don't have an exact timeline.

Those who enjoy the rich, ambitious, character-driven dramas of director Paul Thomas Anderson but who live far from major cities may have to wait a little longer to see his next film, Inherent Vice. Anderson’s adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s pulpy detective noir will get a limited release on December 12, 2014, but will not go into a nationwide release until the first post-holiday weekend of January. It is a similar release pattern to many Oscar-oriented films over the years, notably 2013′s Her (that came out in mid-December but went wide right before the Golden Globes) and 2012′s Zero Dark Thirty, as well as the director’s own There Will Be Blood and Magnolia.

Though it is used (cropped and not as colorful) on the cover of Criterion Collection’s DVD, I hadn’t seen this fabulous UK quad poster for Ronald Neame’s The Horse’s Mouth until recently when I read about a wonderful discovery in a London tube station. Four years ago, workers at the Notting Hill underground station discovered a passageway that had been sealed off half a century earlier when the station had converted from elevators to escalators. Left behind in the sealed tunnel was a time capsule of late 50s graphic art in the form of movie posters and advertisements left more or less intact.
This is the kind of thing I dream about (you can see more photos here). The sealing of the tunnel can be roughly dated by the release dates of the four films advertised. The Horse’s Mouth came out in the Us in...

This week on Trailers from Hell, writer and produce Alan Spencer talks Joshua Logan's outsize 1969 gold rush musical "Paint Your Wagon," starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Marvin and Jean Seberg. Movie musicals don't come with a more problematic pedigree than director Josh Logan's Paint Your Wagon. Starring two notably tone-deaf non-singers, Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood, and written by that exemplar of "Kitchen Sink" realism, Paddy Chayefsky, Logan's film is a 2 1/2 hour musical made at a time when the genre was considered box-office poison (the film turned out to be one of Paramount's highest grossing films but never earned enough to cover its budget). Marvin, who had a No. 1 hit in the UK with his rendition of "Wanderin' Star," turned down The Wild Bunch for this.

What do Sex Tape, Beware The Night and Kitchen Sink have in common? Well, they are all movies from Sony that Box Office Mojo reports have shifted their release date. Beyond that they have virtually nothing in common. Sorry, that wasn't a fun game at all. Coming first will be Beware the Night, writer-director Scott Derrickson's follow-up to the 2012 horror hit Sinister. Eric Bana will front the film as a New York City cop whose lost his faith and finds himself facing off with a man possessed by the devil. Olivia Munn and Joel McHale will co-star as Bana's worried wife and tough partner, respectively. Described as a crime drama with doses of action and horror tropes, Beware the Night is now in production. Previously slated for release on January 16th, 2015, it's been pushed forward to July 2nd, 2014. In its old spot, the film would have opened against limited...

"There's going to be people who do it for religious reasons and I can't argue with that - if you've got to be married before you can 'ave it away, fine.
"But it just doesn't mean anything - people get divorced all the time. You have a fall-out over who ate the last Jaffa Cake and that's enough to split up.

The cast of characters in writer/director Curtis Harrington’s autobiography Nice Guys Don’t Work In Hollywood: The Adventures of an Aesthete in the Movie Business (Drag City Incorporated, www.dragcity.com) is nothing short of amazing. A partial list of featured and supporting players includes avant-garde pioneer Kenneth Anger, director James Whale, Jean Cocteau, Shelley Winters, Robert Bresson, Forrest (Forry) Ackerman, Christopher Isherwood (who punched Harrington), Stanley Kubrick, Debbie Reynolds, Roger Corman and the cast of Charlie’s Angels. To call his CV eclectic is something of an understatement, and it’s doubtful that any other major or minor Hollywood figure’s career moved as Harrington’s did: from the resolutely experimental to the realm of low brow American television drama of the ‘70s and ‘80s.
Born and raised in California, Harrington was entranced by movies, art and literature at an early age. Among his early accomplishments,...

While the upcoming Kitchen Sink knowingly winks at genre mash-ups with its story of a human-vampires-and-zombies alliance against invading aliens, the fact remains that it obviously wants to laugh at its genre cake and eat it too. (“You’re stupid, genre cake!” it says, before gleefully devouring it anyway.) Still, knowing that Bob Odenkirk and Patton Oswalt are in it definitely gives credence to claims it’s more of a comedy than anything that might accidentally also make a lot of money, telling the story of a group of awkward high-school teens just trying to survive the pains of adolescence ...

Sony Pictures has revealed that Patton Oswalt, Bob Odenkirk and Ian Roberts will join genre-frenzy movie The Kitchen Sink, as the full cast begins to take shape.
Oswalt, Odenkirk and Roberts will star in The Kitchen Sink, in what is being described by Deadline as a “genre mash-up” of zombies, vampires and aliens. The project that has been in the works for quite some time, with Robbie Pickering directing a script from Oren Uziel, and Ron Schmidt and Jonah Hill on board as executive producers. Matt Tolmach is producing the movie and had this to say about The Kitchen Sink back in 2011 (from The Hollywood Reporter):
“It’s more in the spirit of The Breakfast Club than anything, but you get an idea of the title in an early scene where two kids are running from zombies. Those zombies suddenly are attacked by vampires. Just when they are all facing off,...

Over two years ago, it was thought that Jonah Hill would make his directorial debut with a genre mash-up called Kitchen Sink. Instead, it will be Robbie Pickering (Natural Selection) at the helm of the story which takes place in Dilford, a town where vampires are at the top of the social order, zombies are at the bottom, and the humans were in the middle. But this order is thrown into upheaval as an alien race begins to invade, and a high school-aged vampire, zombie and human as have to try to save their town. Basically the coming-of-age tale has everything but the kitchen sink, and that's where the title comes from. Now comedians Patton Oswalt and Bob Odenkirk have joined the cast of the interesting film. More below! The script from Oren Uziel appeared on the 2010 Black List and Sony's Matt Tolmach picked up the script as one of...

Originally set to be Jonah Hill’s directorial debut, the Black List-approved “Kitchen Sink”—described as “The Breakfast Club” meets “Zombieland” with vampires and an alien invasion thrown in for good measure—has beefed its cast with some solid comedic forces. Deadline is reporting that Patton Oswalt, Bob Odenkirk and Ian Roberts (the Literal Doctor on “Arrested Development” and “Key & Peele” showrunner) have joined the film in unnamed roles, though it’s highly likely that the roles will be teachers or school administrators, given the high school setting of the genre mash-up. Will Smith isn’t letting the disappointing “After Earth” slow him down and he’s pushing ahead with his next starring role, con-man movie “Focus.” THR reports that Xerxes himself, Rodrigo Santoro is joining the film as a “magnetic and powerful owner of an international auto racing team who is vying for” the affections of female...

The Kitchen Sink Drama is unique to British cinema. They are essentially films seen through the lens of social realism. A determination to examine the lives of the working and dispossessed classes in a non sentimental way is crucial to the Kitchen Sink drama. The movement began in the late 1950s and has survived to this day with the oeuvre of Ken Loach and films such as Nil By Mouth.
Tackling thorny themes is a trademark of the Kitchen Sink drama. Abortion, divorce, homelessness, single motherhood, inter racial sex, poverty and homosexuality were all ripe topics to be examined. There was also the advent of The Angry Young Man – usually working class men railing against everyone and everything.

You wouldn’t know by looking at her, but Vanessa Hudgens needed an adjustment on Thursday (August 1) as she paid a visit to her chiropractor in Santa Monica, CA.
And by the looks of her perfect posture it did her some good, as the "Spring Breakers" star left looking refreshed in a floral skirt and white sleeveless top.
Hudgens can next be seen on the big screen on August 23, when her latest film, "The Frozen Ground" hits theaters. She’s also been busy lending her voice to an animated film, "The Great Migration.”
The 24-year-old is now in talks to star in “Kitchen Sink,” a movie that revolves around a group of teens who form an “unlikely alliance with vampires and zombies in order to take on an alien army.”
She’ll definitely need to see the chiropractor again after finishing that flick!

Spring break, forever: According to TheWrap, Vanessa Hudgens is in talks to star in "Kitchen Sink," a high-concept genre riff that focuses on a group of teens who team with vampires and zombies to fend off alien invaders. (It's like "Monster Squad," but for modern audiences; no word yet if Wolfman and his nards will appear.)
Oren Uziel wrote the script for "Kitchen Sink," which appeared on the 2010 Black List, a collection of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood. Uziel was recently tapped by Sony to write "Men In Black 4."
For Hudgens, "Kitchen Sink" would be another shift away from expectations. The actress, who also stars as a prostitute in this year's thriller "Frozen Ground," has said in the past that her goal is to become the type of performer who's taken seriously for their work.

Sony.s upcoming horror comedy The Kitchen Sink hasn.t really been living up to its title in the casting department, but that tide appears to be turning as two known names are now attached to the project. Comedian Denis Leary has definitely signed on, The Wrap reports, while Disney-gone-Harmony Korine actress Vanessa Hudgens is in early talks to sign on. What good is a horror comedy without comedy and sex appeal, right? Kitchen Sink, which has seen a good number of Zombieland comparisons in terms of tone, is based on a 2010 Black List script written by very busy screenwriter Oren Uziel, and begins with an full-scale alien invasion in a small town. In order to take down the alien threat, a group of the town.s citizens team up with zombies and vampires. Leary is set to play one of the most affluent and intelligent people in town...
