Julia Louis-Dreyfus did not appear in this pilot episode. In fact, she was unaware that the episode existed until it was released as part of the DVD box set in 2004.
Lee Garlington was originally supposed to be a member of the cast, as Claire, the coffee shop waitress who gave Jerry and George friendly advice. But when the show was picked up, her character was dropped.
In this, the pilot for Seinfeld (1989), Kramer's (Michael Richards) name was "Kessler." This discrepancy was the basis of a joke in episode 9.8 The Betrayal (1997), where there is a flashback to when Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld) and Kramer first meet. When introducing himself to Kramer, Jerry says "I saw your name on the board downstairs. Kessler, right?," to which Kramer responds "Actually, it's Kramer."
In this episode, Kramer/Kessler (Michael Richards) has a pet dog (named Ralph in the script) but he is never seen again. The dog was added so that Jerry Seinfeld could perform a stand-up bit about dogs but the segment was cut.
After the series was picked up in 1990, all subsequent airings of this 1989 pilot include the familiar "Seinfeld" title/opening and theme music as opposed to the original "The Seinfeld Chronicles" title and theme music, which was completely different. Both versions of the episode are available on the Season 1-2 DVD set. In syndicated reruns, this episode is titled "Good News, Bad News."
