Each week we take a look at what’s new and what’s essential viewing on the various VOD and movie streaming services. There is a dose of Superheroes and sci-fi this week, along with a very silly comedy indeed and a couple of films with a very different take on the cop thriller genre.
Oblivion (2013)
Joseph Kosinski jumped head first into the CGI ocean with his 2010 revisiting of the Tron franchise, and despite a critical slap the film was an enjoyable updating of Disney’s neonclad world. Once announced that Kosinski was to return to sci-fi for his next film, with Tom Cruise no less, the hype train for Oblivion was building despite the ostensibly similar After Earth joining it in a crowded summer season.
The result is a fun film, with Cruise and Morgan Freeman bringing some gravitas to a fairly light story set in a beautifully realised world.

"However pious, however holy, temptation hunts us all!" Ato Pictures has debuted a theatrical trailer for the supernatural thriller The Monk, directed by German filmmaker Dominik Moll. This premiered way back in 2011 and is just now getting a Us release this March, but it looks incredibly dark (blame the Dp!) and creepy and weird as all Hell, but interesting. Mostly because it stars French actor Vincent Cassel as a monk brought up a monastery, corrupted by temptation. There's a lot of weird imagery, complimenting a story adapted from Matthew Lewis' classic novel. If a gothic supernatural thriller sounds fun, give it a look. Watch the full Us trailer for Dominik Moll's thriller The Monk, originally from ShockTillYouDrop: Madrid, in the 17th Century. (Warning: Significant spoilers follow!)
When we last saw the Eighth Doctor at the end of season four’s “To the Death”, he was…not in a happy place. Lucie Miller and Tamsin were both dead. The Doctor’s great-grandson Alex was dead. The Monk had escaped and the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan was an emotional wreck. We see the Doctor vow to somehow go back in time and rescue Lucie (and presumably Alex and Tamsin). Then the episode ended and we all looked eagerly to the resolution of this plot.
Well, it’s been a couple years now, and Big Finish have finally released “Dark Eyes”, a boxed-set that basically amounts to season five the Eighth Doctor Adventures. One would expect it to pick up where the last story left off and to see the Doctor trying to find a way to save his friends and family.
One would be wrong.

★★☆☆☆ Based on the Gothic novel by Matthew G. Lewis, German director Dominik Moll's fourth feature The Monk (2011) delves deep into the world of an 18th century Spanish Capuchin monastery, where one of its most revered brethren is drawn towards the black arts of sin and the supernatural. Abandoned on the steps of the monastery as a baby, Father Ambrosio (Vincent Cassel) grows to become an impassioned preacher. However, when a new novice appears within the cloistered walls, Ambrosio's faith is tested to extreme lengths.

As of last Friday, The Monk, the latest adaptation of Matthew Lewis’ revered and controversial eighteenth-century novel, made its way into select cinemas across the U.K.
The film, co-written and directed by Dominik Moll, centers on Ambrosio (Vincent Cassel), an acclaimed monk who, after becoming entranced by a masked figure (Déborah François) who takes shelter in the monastery, is lead down a destructive path full of sin.
Earlier this year at the 2012 Glasgow Film Festival, HeyUGuys had the opportunity to speak to Dominik about what initially drew him to Lewis’ source material, how he went about bringing the themes and ideas into the 21st century and what it was like to work with Vincent Cassel.
Here’s the interview in full:
___________
HeyUGuys: What was it about Matthew Lewis’ source material that made you so interested in bringing The Monk to the cinema screen?
Dominik Moll: Well, several things.

Another busy weeks of cinema releases this week but despite the wide array of movie offerings, there’s clearly one fantastical, latex-clad, cross-over blockbuster which towers above all the others. I am of course referring, to Strippers Vs Werewolves.
Apparently there’s some small, niche movie about a bunch of crazy vigilantes who gang up to fight with one of their mentally disturbed brothers, but I doubt you’ve heard of it.
No, but seriously folks, stitch your sides back together and i’ll level with you, The Avengers Assemble is out this Friday and after the months of trailers, stills, clips and more trailers, the anticipation is as they say at fever pitch. I imagine many of us have tickets booked up for the opening weekend already and after near unanimously positive reviews in the press, expectations are sky high.
As one might expect, few studios have bothered putting...

Dominik Moll is the German-born film-maker who created the elegant noir suspense movies Lemming (2005) and Harry, He's Here to Help (2000) – now he has adapted The Monk, by Matthew Lewis, the classic English gothic novel of the 18th century. It stars Vincent Cassel as Friar Ambrosio, a charismatic monk tempted by Satan and the lures of the flesh. With an exclamatory orchestral score by Alberto Iglesias, this feverishly intense movie has a tablespoon of 1970s art-porn; the work of Walerian Borowczyk comes to mind, and Moll could well be a fan of The Omen. Cassel brings to the leading role his accustomed unsmiling intensity, as he comes to terms with the arrival of a strange new monk who wears an eerie face mask after being horribly disfigured in a fire. It is not a story of great depth or passion,...

Abandoned on the doorstep of a monastery in Spain, Ambrosio (Vincent Cassel) becomes a devout friar known far and wide for his ethics and traditionalism, much like the Capuchin monks who raised him. However, after suffering a series of terrorising dreams, he becomes entranced by a masked figure who takes shelter in the monastery. Discovering the figure is actually a woman named Valerio (Déborah François), Ambrosio seduces her, beginning his slow descent into a world of sin.
The Monk, based on Matthew Lewis’ revered and controversial eighteenth century novel of the same name, positions itself strongly as a character-driven, muted period drama. The script, co-written by Dominik Moll and Anne-Louise Trividic, focuses its attention on the psychological aspects of Ambrosio’s fall from grace, heightened by the manifestations of evil that have infected his subconscious and the arrival of the elusive Valerio, played with tremendous sexuality by François.

★★★☆☆ Gothic literature and cinema has often failed to enjoy the same glowing relationship that they did during the silent era, with sinister source material too often used to create a camp horror sub-category that lacks the dark, foreboding atmosphere of such films as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) and Vampyr (1932). Dominik Moll's medieval thriller The Monk (2011), a French adaptation of a Matthew Lewis novel, looks set to help reinvent this ailing genre.

Domink Moll’s adaptation of Matthew Lewis’s grand gothic novel The Monk enters UK cinemas on Friday and we’ve got an exclusive clip from the film for you today.
Vincent Cassell brings his considerable presence to the complex role of Ambrosio, a devout monk whose seductive and captivating sermons have made him an attractive figure and it is these qualities, along with the arrival of the mysterious and disfigured Valerio which provide the fertile ground for his downfall.
The film is an excellent take on the novel, with Cassell doing some amazing work in Moll’s visually sumptious adaptation and the clip we have here is perhaps the tipping point for Ambrosio.
The Monk is out on the 27th of April and comes highly recommended.

When Vincent Cassel burst onto the scene his visceral turns offered a surfeit of rebellion, impressions of Robert De Niro and a bit of casual violence. La Haine's Vinz grew up to be one of the most magnetic screen actors of his era and this month he's back with issues of a more cerebral kind in French psycho-drama The Monk. This new clip shows his Capucin friar, Ambrosio, sharing a doom-laden chat with a wizened - and possibly dying - elder monk. The gist? That some form of evil is at large in the monastery and it's up to him to track it down and, if necessary, punch it in the face. brightcove.createExperiences(); Dominik Moll, the man behind underrated Hitchcockian black comedy Harry, He's Here to Help, has brought Matthew Lewis' 18th century potboiler to life. Judging by this snippet, it's safe to expect Gothic spooks a'plenty...

If you haven't come across it, The Monk is a tale of a clergyman going slowly bonkers in the belfry, written by Matthew Lewis. And, no, not the one from Harry Potter, but the18th century English novelist whose fracturing man-of-God is played by Vincent Cassel in Dominik Moll's new film version of the story. Feast your eyes on the trailer below, then pray for absolution. Dominus! brightcove.createExperiences(); brightcove.createExperiences(); The Monk in question, Ambrosio (Cassel), is the brooding heart of this Gothic potboiler. The trailer hints at a holy man beset by temptations of every stripe. Like The Name Of The Rose meets Lolita, there's a young girl who catches Ambrosio's eye in his Spanish monastery, plus as much sorcery, murder and incest as you can squeeze into a medieval chancel. There will also be many opportunities for Cassel to take his shirt off, which is good...

The Monk opens in the UK next month, and to give you a feel for the film we’ve got an exclusive quad poster, which you can check out in full below. Starring Vincent Cassel, the film is an adaptation of Matthew Lewis’ gothic novel, from way back in 1796. Famed for its horrific images and violence, the text became quite influential, particularly on the Surrealist movement: Luis Buñuel almost filmed the novel in the ‘60s, before Ado Kyrou adapted that script into Le Moine in 1972. The story follows Cassel’s...

The tragedy of a devoted servant of God whose very righteousness leads him on the path to damnation.
What is required of us that we might live virtuous lives? Can righteousness itself lead us to sin? Can a man be condemned to damnation because of the circumstances of his birth? These are among the questions raised by The Monk, a darkly atmospheric version of Matthew Lewis' classic horror tale.
Ambrosio is born in the seventeeth century, in a deeply religious world, but like all the great moral questions, those which torment him might be applied anywhere. Abandoned as a baby,...

In 1824, the mother of Frankenstein wrote an essay entitled, “On Ghosts”, for issue 9 of London Magazine. Besides including a personal nightmare about a haunted house, Mary Shelley relates an account of a suicide, a headless corpse, and a bloody ghost. I am posting an excerpted form of the article here for your Halloween enjoyment. (The full text can be read here.) It ends as she ended it, with a folk tale about a bizarre cat funeral seen at night in a remote German forest; this folk tale is often retold and anthologized, and you may find yourself recognizing it. Her account was told to her by Matthew G. Lewis, an early writer in the Gothic tradition, and whose novel The Monk scandalized English society. He related ghost stories to Mary and Percy Shelley during the same summer that Mary’s novel Frankenstein was conceived.

The Monk (Le Moine)
Directed by Dominik Moll
Written by Dominik Moll and Anne-Louise Trividic, from the novel by Matthew Lewis
France, 2011
Dominik Moll’s The Monk is so redolent with Gothic gloom, overweening piety and suppressed lust that it’s almost in danger of self-combusting. It’s held together by a towering performance from Vincent Cassel, who recently played French gangster Jacques Mesrine, and seems to exude menace without even trying.
From the moment a baby is left to be pecked by crows outside a Capuchin monastery in Spain, you know we’re in very dark territory. Despite an ominous birthmark on his shoulder, the unfortunate boy is taken in and raised by the monks. Ambrosio grows up to be a man of unimpeachable virtue and religious zeal and a beacon of hope for worshippers like beautiful young Antonia (Joséphine Japy). But things start to unravel when Ambrosio ignores...

French-Spanish production “The Monk” is the third feature from writer director Dominik Moll (“Harry, He’s Here To Help”, “Lemming”), and is an adaptation of the 1796 novel by Matthew Lewis, itself renowned as being one of the key texts of gothic literature. Having been adapted for the screen back in 1972 by Ado Kyrou (with a script co-written by Luis Buñuel), the book has proved hugely influential over the years, not to mention controversial, being banned for its risqué content and dealing with a variety sacrilegious themes. Given this, it’s hard to imagine a better choice of actor for the lead role than charismatic madman Vincent Cassel, whose mere presence in this kind of genre fare is immediately enough to elevate to being a film of considerable interest. Cassel plays Ambrosia, a monk who has spent his whole life in the monastery after being found on its steps as a baby,...

This has admittedly been online for a while, but if it's passed you by so far, and with its French release imminent, we thought we'd draw your attention to this trailer for The Monk, starring Vincent Cassel and directed by Dominik Moll. There's a poster too. It's classy-looking stuff from the writer/director of Harry, He's Here To Help and Lemming, and if the lack of subtitles leaves you scratching your head, you should at least be able to glean some of what you need to know from the fact that it's based on the infamous Gothic novel by Matthew Lewis.*In the book, written in the 18th century when its author was just 20, Cassel's character is Ambrosio, who starts on a tragic downward spiral when he's seduced by a woman who he thinks is another monk. Cue black magic, murder, rape, satanism, the Spanish Inquisition and being thrown into dark pits,...

Machine Gun Preacher
Opens: 2011
Cast: Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Shannon, Madeline Carroll, Kathy Baker
Director: Marc Forster
Summary: After finding God, drug-dealing biker Sam Childers renounces his outlaw ways and embarks on a spiritual path, becoming a crusader for hundreds of desperate and helpless children who were being forced to become soldiers in war-torn southern Sudan.
Analysis: Despite taking the freshly rejuvenated James Bond franchise and nearly destroying it with the very disappointing "Quantum of Solace", German-Swiss filmmaker Marc Forster still has a decent amount of good will left thanks to strong earlier efforts like "Monster's Ball," "Finding Neverland," "Stranger Than Fiction" and "The Kite Runner".
Now, in his first film since that Bond outing, Forster returns to serious drama with this true story tale of a biker who became a humanitarian crusader for children in the Sudan. The story itself is fascinating, the born again Sam Childers and...
