Keeping Faith In ‘The Traitors’
Staying faithful: Has there been another entertainment show with an impact nearing that of The Traitors in recent years? The reality whodunnit format has sold around the world after debuting in the Netherlands, becoming a smash on Peacock and the BBC in the UK. For my money, it’s the casting that’s marked it out from the crowd, and casting will be all-important to the upcoming British celebrity version. As Stewart and Max revealed yesterday, the BBC and Studio Lambert — which makes the UK and U.S. versions — are close to a deal make a version with famous faces. Exclusive: Channel 4 has axed its splashy version of U.S. survival format Alone after one season.
The series from Squid Game: The Challenge producer The Garden, which has aired in the U.S. for a decade, has been one of a handful under consideration for a second series recommission over the past few months, we understand. Producers had been preparing for a second season.
In Alone, 11 contestants are dropped into the remote Canadian Wilderness, where each must survive entirely on their own. Eventual winner Tom Williams took home the £100,000 in September 2023 after battling the elements, wild animals and an extreme test of mental strength. The show had been unveiled by Channel 4 in August 2022 alongside The Traitors-esque format Rise and Fall.
Alone began quietly over the summer with an audience of around 700,000 per episode but this figure nearly doubled when consolidated viewing was taken into account, and the show...

By now, the world knows that Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist are getting a divorce.
It’s only been three months since The Golden Wedding, and The Golden Bachelor’s first couple is already calling it quits.
It was a massive shock to Bachelor Nation, as we thought Gerry and Theresa might stand the test of time.
After all, they were “so in love” after getting engaged on the show that they rushed to the alter and got married less than two months after the season finale aired.
But Gerry’s season wasn’t without controversy, and despite being one of the most popular franchise stars, he was accused of being a bit of a player and a bad boyfriend ahead of that episode — causing some fans to question if he was really a good guy or if he was just a really good actor.

Exclusive: The co-producer of Squid Game: The Challenge is bringing its fixed rig expertise to more genres following the success of the Netflix smash, and has promoted three execs to help with the push.
Prolific British unscripted outfit The Garden has nurtured a reputation over the past decade for a string of hit fixed rig shows for broadcasters such as 24 Hours In Police Custody and 24 Hours in A&e, but has recently turned to more formatted fare including the Squid Game gameshow and Channel 4’s Alone, a UK version of the History hit.
CEO John Hay, who has taken sole charge from Magnus Temple and Nicola Hill, said the reshaping of the outfit’s strategy has been a long time coming, and there are plans to move the dial further.

Happy New Year! ‘Terror Train’ Dares to Ask Whether Dying Is Preferable to Watching a Bad Magic Show
On Friday nights — and special occasions!— IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: You Know, Getting Murdered on a Train Might Still Be Better Than Going to Times Square
The underwhelming New Year’s Eve party is a universal human experience if there ever was one. The holiday is ostensibly the biggest night of the year for debauchery, but burnout, outlandish expectations, and rowdy crowds often turn it into a letdown that makes it a little easier to trade our holiday cheer in for January discipline. But no matter what disappointing experience comes your way tonight, you can take comfort...

Exclusive: Netflix is on the verge of greenlighting French and German versions of reality format Surviving Paradise from Squid Game: The Challenge producer Studio Lambert and Raw TV, as it steps up its strategy in the premium unscripted space.
Nothing is signed but Deadline understands a deal is relatively close. If greenlit, the two versions would be filmed in their respective languages and Netflix would take a similar approach to The Circle, with Studio Lambert and Raw producing the different versions from a central hub.
In Surviving Paradise, 12 players believe they’re about to live it up for a summer at a beautiful villa. However, when they arrive, some remain in the villa while others are condemned to camping in the wilderness, and they all compete to enter the villa and win a $100,000 cash prize. Tilda Swinton famously cut her acting teeth on the experimental films of late director Derek Jarman such as Caravaggio and The Garden as well as life-long friend Joanna Hogg’s debut short Caprice and Sally Potter’s Orlando.
Nearly 50 years later, she has continued to work with Hogg as well as in the experimental cinema arena, finding a new Jarman-esque kindred spirit in Thai artist and filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
Speaking in an in-conversation event at the Marrakech Film Festival on Monday, the actress revealed how some of the big commercial studio pictures she has worked on across her career have felt personally more experimental to her than her avant-garde work.
“I’ve been really fortunate to have some adventures in worlds of filmmaking that I never thought I would be able to go into,” she said.

“Squid Game: The Challenge” will premiere next week with a prize worth millions on the line. And no one can be trusted in this competition series that was inspired by the hit South Korean thriller “Squid Game.”
“Squid Game: The Challenge” was first ordered in June 2022, less than a year after the premiere of “Squid Game.” The 10-episode show is a co-production between Studio Lambert and The Garden, which is part of ITV Studios. Stephen Lambert, Tim Harcourt, and Toni Ireland from Studio Lambert and John Hay, Nicola Hill, and Nicola Brown from The Garden serve as executive producers.
The show is a spin-off reality competition inspired by the streamer’s successful title, “Squid Game.” That nine-episode Korean language series is centered on financially broken contestants who are invited to play children’s games for a cash prize — but not only are the stakes high, they’re deadly. The show debuted on Netflix Sept.

Toward the end of boygenius’ headlining set at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 2, Phoebe Bridgers asked the sold-out crowd for a favor. Could we all put away our phones for the next song? Remarkably, all but a scattering of contrarians complied.

Thanks to her new album I Inside the Old Year Dying, Pj Harvey is finally playing shows again. The singer-songwriter kicked off her first tour since 2017 this weekend in Dublin, performing her new LP in its entirety before dusting off some old favorites. Check out clips of the concert below.
Harvey’s latest work keeps up the folk-tinged sound she’s been cultivating since her 2009 reinvention White Chalk. As such, new tracks like “A Child’s Question, July” feature rumbling percussion and maudlin keys as the singer reaches for her upper register. It makes sense, then, that after her I Inside the Old Year Dying set, the artist would dust off a song like the ghostly “Angelene,” from Is This Desire?, for the first time since 2012.

Ben Whishaw has stealthily become one of Britain’s most prominent actors, offering kind aphorisms as the voice of Paddington Bear and issuing intelligent retorts as the latest incarnation of Q in the James Bond series. But a deeper look at his filmography over more than two decades reveals a much more varied body of work. From the meek gentility of Women Talking to the brutal physicality of Surge, from playing with the iconography of Bob Dylan in Todd Haynes’s I’m Not There to committing to the absurdist antics of Yorgos Lanthimos’s The Lobster, Whishaw knows how to surprise in any register.
The actor gets one of his most compelling showcases to date in Ira Sachs’s Passages. As the graphic artist Martin, he’s one corner of an emerging love triangle between his husband, the film director Tomas (an electric Franz Rogowski), and the Parisian schoolteacher Agathe...

During Tudum: A Global Fan Event, which was broadcast live from São Paulo, Brazil, Netflix shared the first official look and teaser for the upcoming reality competition, “Squid Game: The Challenge”. The new series is based on the popular Korean-language and Emmy-winning thriller and will see real people vying for a cash prize in what the streaming platform is claiming to be “the biggest reality competition series ever.”
In the 30-second clip that debuted during the Netflix convention, audiences got a brief taste of the intense competition to come. “This November, the world’s most notorious game becomes reality,” the footage read as it showed footage of “Squid Game”‘s now-iconic sets being reconstructed for real people. The teaser also showed some of the contestants entering the arena for the first child’s game, Red Light, Green Light, with Young-hee, the motion-sensing animatronic killer doll returning after first appearing in season 1 of the scripted series.

“The world’s most notorious game becomes reality.”
That’s how Netflix is describing its new competition series, Squid Game: The Challenge that’s dropping in November.
The streamer didn’t reveal much about the game based on its runaway hit Squid Game, other than to show how they transformed a massive warehouse into a spot where 456 players will compete or a $4.56M cash prize – the largest cash prize ever for a reality series.
The ten-part series will see contestants competing in a series of games inspired by the show plus some new ones and their strategies, alliances, and character will be put to the test while competitors are eliminated around them.
It is produced by Studio Lambert, the All3Media-backed producer behind Netflix series such as The Circle, and Peacock/BBC hit The Traitors, and The Garden, the ITV Studios-backed producer behind Channel 4 ob-doc series 24 Hours in A&e....

Taking Toei
Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund Public Investment Fund (Pif) has increased its stake in Japanese film and TV studio Toei Company, from 5% to 6.03%, according to a report by the Reuters financial news agency. The move comes shortly after Toei published a ten-year plan for international expansion.
Toei includes film and TV production operations, the T-Joy cinema chain and Toei Animation. Last month, it said that it had beaten its film revenue record, thanks to the success of titles including “The First Slam Dunk,” “The Legend of Butterfly” and “One Piece Film Red.”
The stake increase also follows Pif’s February announcement that it had increased its stake in Japanese games and console maker Nintendo to 8.26% and that (along with the Singapore state fund Gic) was a buyer of a $966 million bond issue from Korean entertainment-tech firm Kakao Corp.

Exclusive: Squid Game: The Challenge faced an independent safety assessment after contestants on the Netflix reality series required medical attention during filming.

The reality show version of the streamer’s hit drama ‘Squid Game’ is proving to be an ordeal for the contestants. Some 228 contestants, who were immediately eliminated from ‘Squid Game: The Challenge’ on January 23 in a game of ‘Red Light Green Light’, provided a memorable story for tabloids, reports ‘Variety’.
The story made it to the front page for British tabloid ‘The Sun’, whose January 25 splash read ‘Squid Game Horror in UK’.
The story described how contestants on the reality show — produced by Studio Lambert, the same company behind the massive hit, ‘The Traitors’ and ‘The Garden’, had been left freezing in a cavernous aeroplane hanger in Bedford, playing a seemingly interminable game where they had to hold statue-like poses for almost 30 minutes.

When John heard that Netflix was making a reality show version of the streamer’s hit drama “Squid Game,” he was all in. His love of the original series resonated with casting agents and, to his amazement, he was tapped as one of 456 contestants playing the U.K.-filmed game. As far as John was concerned, that eye-watering 4.56 million cash prize — the biggest ever in reality history — had his name on it.
“I thought I was going to win it, because I’m so competitive,” says John, whose real name has been changed to protect his identity. “When it comes to these sorts of games, I’m good at them. They’re games of chance, luck and wit. I live for that sort of thing.”
But on day one of production, John “died” playing the very first challenge.
The British native was among roughly 228 contestants immediately eliminated from “Squid Game: The Challenge” on Jan.

February, marking both Black History Month and Valentine’s Day, is the kind of stretch from which a programmer can mine plenty. Accordingly the Criterion Channel have oriented their next slate around both. The former is mostly noted in a series comprising numerous features and shorts: Shirley Clarke and William Greaves up to Ephraim Asili and Garrett Bradley, among them gems such as Varda’s Black Panthers and Kathleen Collins’ Losing Ground; a six-film series on James Baldwin; and 10 works by Oscar Micheaux.

Netflix has defended freezing cold conditions on an outdoor U.K. set where its real-life Squid Game unscripted series saw contestants sustain injuries while competing as winter temperatures plunged below zero.
On Wednesday, the streamer and its co-producers pushed back on claims in The Sun tabloid newspaper that players had been severely injured during production on a former air force base near Bedford, in England’s eastern region, during a rare cold snap.
“We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures. While it was very cold on set — and participants were prepared for that — any claims of serious injury are untrue,” Netflix and Studio Lambert, which is co-producing Squid Game: The Challenge along with The Garden, said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

The real-life “Squid Game” contestants are unexpectedly facing real life-or-death circumstances.
The Sun reported that cast members of Netflix reality competition series “Squid Game: The Challenge” required medical attention while filming during freezing weather conditions in an airplane hangar. Per The Sun, the 456 people competing for a 4.56 million prize were playing a game of “Red Light, Green Light,” also known as “Statues,” in minus 3 degrees Celsius weather, roughly 26 degrees Fahrenheit. Contestants had to remain completely motionless for the game, with some unable to move their feet due to the cold.
The series began production on January 23 in Cardington Studios in Bedford, England. Netflix reportedly gave contestants hand warmers and thermal underwear to wear while in the freezing weather conditions.
Fewer than five players required medical attention. One contestant also injured their shoulder after accidentally running into a wall.

On the Come Up, directed by actress-turned-director Sanaa Lathan and written by Zora Howard (Premature) and Kay Oyegun, is based on the book by acclaimed author Angie Thomas (The Hate U Give). The film explores the many facets of Black girlhood through hip-hop music and the general music industry. The novel is 464 pages, and the movie tries to cram all that information into two hours, which sometimes overshadows the messaging. But what works is that it speaks to a demographic that is often ignored and the culture of rap that is seldom explored from a woman’s perspective.
The film starts with Bri (Jamila Gray) being abandoned by her drug-addicted mother Jay (Lathan). The memory traumatizes her throughout her adolescence until the point she’s introduced as a 16-year old She’s also mourning the death of her father, a former rapper called Law from the Garden Heights. She wants...

Salomé Jashi's Taming the Garden is showing exclusively on Mubi in many countries starting January 19, 2022 in the series Viewfinder, as well as in the series New Voices in Georgian Cinema.Taming the Garden recounts only part of the story that happened to us all here in the country of Georgia. The film translates the story into a myth, a fairytale, and deliberately leaves out quite some background information. The actual story, with all its dimensions and elements, is immense, not squeezable into a film format. While we were working on Taming the Garden, there were many stories that stayed “behind the fences”—behind the camera. This was for various reasons,...
