Night Club (1989) Poster

(II) (1989)

Nicholas Hoppe: Nick

Quotes

  • Beth : [wielding a camcorder, making home movie]  Nick, the movers are gonna be here any minute!

    Nick : I know.

Beth : [narrating]  This is where it all began. Two years ago, they were all but complete strangers. Who would have thought that a couple of margaritas and one night of bliss on this imported rug would lead to... "darling, won't you marry me?"

    [he is busy typing]

Beth : Come on, Nick, we have to meet the real estate agent to give us the keys to the warehouse.

    Nick : Just a sec.

Beth : [narrating:]  Nicholas Taylor, believed by most people to be a writer of serious fiction, but in actuality, he's the owner of the wildly successful new night club, Zex House.

    Nick : [incredulous]  Zex House?

Beth : Mr. Taylor, I hear you have big plans for this new night spot. Can you tell us about them?

Nick : Hang on, I'm almost finished with this chapter. You know how I work better under pressure.

Beth : Here we have it. From fiction to fact, art versus business, can he do it? Or will success spoil Mr. Taylor?

Nick : Come here, read this.

Beth : Read it? What if I don't like it?

Nick : You'll like this. It has a happy ending.

Beth : [he caresses her as she reads]  "For the past two years, they had shaped their love in the confines of these walls. Now he believed they could make it. But even if he didn't, in their hearts they would always carry the imprint of their romantic maneuvers." This is a happy ending?

    Nick : Oh, there's more.

    Beth : No, there isn't.

    Nick : Yeah.

    [there isn't, but he adds:]

Nick : He looks into her eyes with a sincerity he hasn't felt since he was fifteen, in love for the first time.

    [leading to their passionate kiss]

  • Beth : [arriving at building]  Here we are! Our new home!

[he goes to the front door]

Beth : Wait, I gotta get this on tape. We'll play it on opening night.

Nick : [tries to open, but...]  It's locked!

Beth : [scene shifts, they're at the back of the property now, he is going to gain access somehow]  Nick, maybe we shouldn't be doing this.

Nick : We paid a lot of money for this place. I'm going in.

[climbs up chain-link fence, jumps over barbed wire]

  • Lisa : Real enough for you?

Nick : At this point, I don't care if it's real or not.

[as his dream vision stands looking over the railing:]

Nick : You look so much like my wife.

    Lisa : Oh really?

Nick : [stroking her cheek]  Your skin...

Lisa : [very confident and cool]  Soft.

  • Beth : [entering]  What time did you get home?

Nick : I don't know. Maybe an hour ago.

Beth : How did it go? Did you get the money?

    Nick : Not exactly.

    Beth : What happened?

Nick : He didn't wanna do it.

Beth : Did you explain it to him? How much money he could make?

Nick : Yeah, I told him. He's not interested.

    Beth : I see.

    [nods]

    Beth : And that's that?

    Nick : That's that.

    [heads off]

Beth : Nick, what is it with you?

Nick : Once again, your husband fucked up.

Beth : Oh, spare me the self-pity! What are we gonna do when he comes over tonight? Milk and cookies?

    Nick : It's a long drive, I'm sure he'll be hungry.

Beth : Do you have to turn everything into a joke?

Nick : [scoffs]  First, I'm self-pitying. Now I make too many jokes.

Beth : Nick, I'm trying, I really am. Do you wanna work this out or what?

    Nick : I don't know.

    Beth : You don't know.

    Nick : All right, maybe I don't.

Beth : [folding her arms]  Why's that?

Nick : Happy endings make me sick.

  • Nick : [as she kisses him]  Don't start something you don't have time to finish.

Beth : It won't take long.

Nick : If it's a matter of expediency, I can take care of it myself. Two hands, it only takes one.

Beth : [smiling]  You use the other one to turn the pages, don't you?

    [scoffs]

Beth : Well, I guess we'll both have to wait till later.

Nick : [as she goes off on modeling assignment]  Guess so.

  • Nick : [as he sees her in the mirror]  I missed you this morning.

Lisa : [smiling as she comes up behind him]  Did you want your wife to find us?

Nick : [as she caresses his chest]  I told her about us.

    Lisa : I don't believe you.

Nick : She didn't believe me either.

Lisa : I'm not surprised. The state you're in.

  • Nick : [as Lisa stands before the mirror, fixing her earrings]  Is there someone else? You're married?

    Lisa : You're married. You're jealous.

Nick : I have no right to be.

[starts putting his T-shirt back on]

Lisa : But you are anyway.

[he nods, and she strokes his wet hair]

Lisa : I'm all yours. Yours only.

Nick : Do I see you again?

    Lisa : [kissing him]  Maybe.

[backing away in enticing way, smiling at him]

Lisa : In your wildest dreams.

    [the security rail is locked]

    Lisa : Open the door.

    [he just smiles]

Lisa : I'll scream until your wife hears me.

Nick : Fine, then she'll have to believe me.

[purposefully, Lisa screams long and hard]

Nick : Oh, I forgot to tell you, she had to go to a meeting.

Lisa : [turns around, grinning]  You believe that?

Nick : [clearly uncertain]  What are you implying?

Lisa : [shrugs]  That's your imagination at work, not mine.

  • Lisa : [buttons loose, offering herself]  The name's Lisa.

Eddie : [pleased by the pretty girl]  What's on your mind, Lisa?

    Lisa : What's on yours?

Eddie : [smiles]  A little of that's always on my mind.

Peter : [surveying Lisa]  Nicholas, didn't anybody tell you that in California, breast enlargements are both affordable and tax-deductible?

Eddie : [waving away his henchman]  Not now, Peter.

Lisa : Do we have a deal, Eddie?

Eddie : I've got nothing to lose I haven't already lost.

Lisa : Why talk about the end when we've just begun?

    Eddie : Nothing lasts forever.

Nick : [as his fantasy girl falls into the wrong hands]  Changing flags, huh? "I'm all yours. Yours only." You think I do not see what is going on here?

Eddie : I don't. Fuck it, I'll find out later.

[his hands roaming over Lisa's bare flesh]

Nick : [to Lisa, who's enjoying Eddie's attentions]  You think I'm going crazy, huh? But I know exactly what's going on here. You're mine. You're my fantasy.

Lisa : That's exactly where you're wrong, darling. A woman like me, I'm everybody's fantasy. I'm what you want, I'm what every man in his right mind wants.

[smirks at Nick as Eddie caresses her intimately]

Lisa : You picked the wrong woman, Nicholas. Sorry, but I'm for hire. Speaking from experience, most people can't handle the truth of their fantasies anyway. You don't need me, and I don't need you.

[Nick rushes forward trying to get Eddie to back away, but Peter blocks him]

Lisa : I mean, I like you and everything, but

    [scoffs]

Lisa : it just gets too damn complex for guys like you. The guilt. If it's fun, it's bad, if it's bad, it's fun. Well, bad can't be fun, because bad is bad. You can't have fantasy and guilt,

    [shakes her head]

Lisa : it will drive you crazy. That's why I go with guys like Eddie here, simple, no conscience, and if there is any, it is successfully repressed by acts of violence and macho-sexual expression. I was designed that way. You should know that, Nicholas. I mean, you and I were doing great for a while there, but

    [scoffs]

Lisa : you began confusing fantasy and love. Fantasies are longing for love.

    [scoffs]

Lisa : You don't come to me looking for love. I'm all in your imagination, and I can't even imagine what love is. It comes from the strangest places inside of us.

    [body heaving]

Nick : [hollowly]  You are my fantasy!

Lisa : [disdainful laughter]  Oh, really? Then why are Eddie and Peter here, hmm? Do you fantasize about them too?

    [Eddie grunts]

Nick : [as his fantasy girl smirks at him]  No!

  • Lisa in the guise of Beth : [jumping out of Jeep as she's just run Nick over]  Oh my God! Nick! Are you okay? Shall I get a doctor?

Nick : [groaning, clutching his rib-cage]  No, I'm okay. I need some more sun.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : Wait here just a sec, okay?

[goes to switch off ignition, then comes back]

Lisa in the guise of Beth : Come on.

Nick : [doesn't want to be led back inside]  Don't go in!

Lisa in the guise of Beth : What's the matter?

Nick : The others are still there.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : What others?

Nick : Eddie and... and Peter.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : I don't see their car or anything.

[Nick looks around, but there really is no other vehicle]

Lisa in the guise of Beth : Come on.

  • Lisa in the guise of Beth : [back inside]  See? Nobody here but us. How sweet, you arranged a picnic!

Nick : [as she sits down]  I was waiting for you.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : I'm sorry. I got stuck completely and had to change two of the layouts.

Nick : Are you having an affair?

Lisa in the guise of Beth : With who?

    Nick : Raymond.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : Raymond? What gave you that idea?

    Nick : I don't know. You didn't come home.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : I told you, I had to work.

Nick : I thought you might still be upset about that fight we had last night. And I was a bit of an asshole.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : You were a big shit, I'd say.

    [takes another sip of wine]

Nick : Look what I found.

[hands her the strip of photo-booth snapshots]

Lisa in the guise of Beth : That's from when we first got to L.A.!

Nick : You think you'll fall in love with me again?

Lisa in the guise of Beth : If I didn't know what I know now, I would, yeah.

  • Nick : We gotta get out of here!

Lisa in the guise of Beth : We don't have to be at the airport for another fourteen hours. What about the picnic? What's the problem?

Nick : Eddie came by. There's no refund. I'm gonna have to sue to get that money back. And Eddie owes the money he lent me, to somebody else. They're putting the squeeze on him.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : [coolly]  So what's he gonna do? Break your thumbs? You've seen too many gangster movies, both of you.

[as she sits down casually, singsong voice:]

Lisa in the guise of Beth : I want a nice picnic.

Nick : Beth, you're being very unrealistic.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : Me? I don't think so.

Nick : Eddie was here already. He burned our tickets and had Peter rough me up.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : This is something you saw on television, right?

Nick : You don't believe me?

[knocks the suitcase he'd been packing onto the floor]

Nick : My rib-cage tells me the pain is very real. It fucking hurts. And he probably would have pulled my spine out if somebody hadn't stopped him.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : Who?

    Nick : I don't remember.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : Your tickets are right here, honey.

[playfully dangles the mysteriously re-appearing tickets over his head]

Nick : I really need to get out of here.

[picks up some of the stuff]

Nick : I know what we'll do. We'll take our suitcases and move them to a hotel. The one we stayed in when we first came to L.A.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : I like that. But first...

[opens her jacket, revealing black lingerie]

Nick : What are you doing?

Lisa in the guise of Beth : I want you to fuck me.

Nick : Let's wait until we're at that hotel.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : [smiling]  I wanna do it in your dungeon of despair.

    [kisses him]

  • Lisa in the guise of Beth : What?

    Nick : I thought I heard a car.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : Don't worry. They'll go away.

    [cuddles up next to him]

  • Nick : [disturbing sound]  It's Eddie. He's trying to get in.

Lisa in the guise of Beth : Okay.

    [lies down again]

Beth : [heard from below]  Honey, I'm home! Are you up there?

Lisa : [as Nick sits bolt upright staring at the fake version]  Well? What did you expect, honey?

Nick : Who are you? Beth?

Lisa : I know it's a cliche, but I'll be whoever you want me to be. Besides, you're not giving me a chance. You're making this up as you go along.

[he's unsure of himself, his hand on her shoulder]

Lisa : It was fun, wasn't it?

    Nick : [mumbling]  I don't know.

    [nearing footsteps are heard]

Lisa : [smirks]  Look at it this way. You get to be with your wife and your mistress. It will drive you crazy at times. It will be like one of those French movies you admire.

Beth : [coming up]  Nick! What's up, honey?

    Nick : I don't know, honey.

[looks over his shoulder, searching for Lisa, but she is, of course, not there]

Lisa : [on TV screen, taunting electronic voice]  See you at the movies.

Beth : [as husband looks dismayed]  What is it?

    Nick : I honestly don't know.

    Beth : Did something happen?

Nick : [running off]  I gotta get out of here!

Beth : Where are you going?

  • Nick : [remorseful cry of anguish, realizing he has lost her forever]  Beth!

Beth : [on screen, dressed like Lisa, flat battery voice]  And in the end, I could see that everything was quite clear from the beginning. If only you had the courage to see it that way, Nick.

    [he comes running back]

Beth : Those were my intentions from the beginning. And now after three months of being away from you and our difficulties, I feel I could start new. With a profound sense for my life.

    [he watches ruefully]

Beth : As you can tell from the envelope, I'm in Europe. There's no return address. Not only because my assignment keeps me on the run all the time, but... also, because...

    [shakes head:]

Beth : I don't want you to follow me. It's better this way. And I'm sure after you get busy with the club, you'll agree. You keep the photos.

    [holds up the strip]

Beth : I need to travel light, Nick. I'm sorry... but there was no way of knowing... Love, Beth.

[stands up, moves off-screen and the screen goes blank]
