I found this film one sleepless night on the Sundance Channel. I did not watch it live, but I recorded it because the headline looked provocative. I was not sure if I would like it at all, but decided to go through with it anyway. I was surprised to learn that this film is very good (exceptional cinematography by Olivier Gueneau as well). It is an artistic study of a man on a downward slope in life. Stan (Claude Berri) is an English teacher who cannot retain his passionate desires for the 17/18 year old Natacha (Elodie Bouchez). Predictably, she refuses his poetic, Shakespearean advances and leaves Stan more angry and frustrated. His frustration is reinforced by his newfound impotency. He feels inadequate in life and makes self-destructive decisions because of it. His wife, Aurore (Aurore Clement) cannot console him either. She understands Stan more than any individual in the film, but refuses to have intercourse with him. Therefore, denying Stan his most primitive desire, and fueling his dark hobby of pedophilia. However, her fidelity is confirmed in the end. There is a beautiful line quoted by one of Stan's friends near the end of the film by Jacques-Benigne Bossuet that sums up the plight of all men rather effortlessly. This is Serge Gainsbourg's creation; he wrote, directed, and composed the score. He is most prolific as a composer and has many albums released. Gainsbourg died in 1991, which would mean that this is his last picture. This film is a great escape from the mundane, repetitive cinema of mainstream Hollywood. The Sundance Channel might be the only way to see it being that there is no available DVD or VHS. While controversial due to its subject matter, I recommend it to anyone who is interested in discovering the possibilities of cinema.
