We’ve talked about Stephen King as the king of horror literature, but there’s another name who is pretty important in the grand scheme of horror. He has had tabletop games, video games, comic book adaptations, and movies made after his work. He has sort of become like John Carpenter in a way. You hear all the time how a movie, or its score in particular, is Carpenter-esque and that has happened to one Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He only lived to 46 and had many works published after his death, but also is the man behind the old gods and the Cthulhu mythos. Even when filmmakers and game designers don’t use creations directly from the author’s work, a lot of horror can be considered Lovecraftian. While some of the more famous ones like Re-Animator and From Beyond are stone cold classics, I wanted to look at an underseen adaptation.

Director Katt Shea (Poision Ivy, Stripped to Kill 1 & 2, The Rage: Carrie II) is remaking her own 1989 vampire movie Dance of the Damned. I've never seen the original, but based on the trailer (watch below), it looks like a great Skinemax flick starring Cyril O'Reilly sporting the ultimate vampire mullet. It also stars Starr Andreeff (Syngenor) and Maria Ford (The Haunting of Morella, Slumber Party Massacre III). In the original O'Reilly plays a vampire who seduces a stripper who is contemplating suicide. The VHS is going for $16 on Amazon, or you can watch it on YouTube for free.

Welcome to the first installment of a new column here at Fangoria.com, Back Catalogue. Sometimes the Catalogue will cover new releases of older films, and sometimes it will feature exactly what the title implies, back catalogue items. These will normally be from smaller specialty labels that have formed the backbone of the horror fans ability to build a truly representative collection of their favorite films. I'm proud to start this column back up after a two year hiatus and promise to work hard to recommend films that you're in danger of forgetting about, have maybe never heard of, or that might be ready to go out of print.
I'm also proud that the first edition of Catalogue is all about Synapse Films. Anybody who goes to conventions and has stopped by the Synapse table has not only seen first hand the amazing array of labor of love releases and Special Editions they produce,...

While the cover of Synapse Films’ recently-issued Special Edition DVD of Syngenor reminded me of Alien, the first half of the movie itself reminded me of my pre-Internet days. I’d randomly grab 3-4 videos to rent from the 99-cent shelves—one from the science fiction section, one from the horror section, one from the action section—and pop each one into my trusty Vcr, watching on my 13-inch TV until I got bored and then popping the next one in.
With that mindset, I had Syngenor on auto-pilot ... it seemed like a fairly typical late 80s/early 90s “evil corporation exploits science for profit, creating monster soldiers that run amuck killing people,” kind of a riff on Robo-Cop and what have you ... and then David Gale (the older evil doctor in Re-Animator, here playing the corporation’s CEO) gave a really twisted line reading that sounded like it didn’t belong in that scene,...
