Recently, I had the chance to sit down with Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon, who are out promoting Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Both Rudd and Coon have been outspoken in their love of the original Ghostbusters, as well as the original cast, and I couldn’t help but put them both on the spot a little bit. Given that young audiences are discovering the original Ghostbusters thanks to these new movies, I wondered which classic comedy featuring some of the cast Rudd and Coon might suggest younger audiences check out next.

One day in 1979, the phone rang at producer Bob Weiss’ house. “Be on your property tonight,” said the voice on the other line. According to the book Wild and Crazy Guys: The Comedy Mavericks of the ’80s Changed Hollywood Forever by Nick de Semlyen, later that evening, an object came flying over the fence and onto Weiss’ backyard. It was the script for a Blues Brothers movie that Wiess commissioned from Dan Aykroyd, who created the musical comedy act with John Belushi for Saturday Night Live.
If the way that Aykroyd delivered the manuscript was odd, the contents inside were even weirder. Titled The Return of the Blues Brothers and credited to the “Scriptatron Gl-9000,” the script was 324 pages long, far more than the 120 page standard, and filled with unlikely digressions.
Weiss shouldn’t have been surprised. Even if the 26-year-old Aykroyd had written a script before (he hadn’t...

One of The Monkees watched The Beatles create a famous part of “A Day in the Life.” Around the same time, The Monkees released their own song that was similarly avant-garde. Both of the songs are five-star classics.
The Monkees’ Micky Dolenz saw The Beatles’ record ‘A Day in the Life’ at a party
During a 2017 interview with Cleveland Scene, Dolenz explained that The Monkees’ sitcom was “about this band that was trying to be The Beatles. Trying to be famous. But on the television show, we never were [famous]. It was the struggle for success that was part of the theme of the show and I think that endeared it to a lot of kids — kids who were in their garages and basements trying to be famous.”
The connection between the Fab Four and the Prefab Four extended beyond that. Dolenz was present for the recordings of certain tracks of Sgt.

Just days after what would have been Tupac Shakur’s 52nd birthday, police have announced they issued a search warrant at a home in Henderson, Nevada, a city that sits under 20 miles outside of Las Vegas, where the rapper was gunned down in 1996.
According to Lt. Jason Johansson of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, “The search warrant that we conducted is in connection with the Tupac Shakur case…It has been a while…It’s a case that’s gone unsolved and hopefully one day we can change that.” As per the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the scene of the warrant appeared to be a tense one, with officers approaching the home with guns drawn. No arrests appeared to have been made.

On that note, a couple hundred movies will be leaving HBO Max in April 2023, including several that horror fans may want to watch before they can no longer be found on there.
That list of horror movies leaving HBO Max next month includes James Wan’s Malignant, as well as last year’s holiday horror movie Adult Swim Yule Log (don’t miss that one!).

Tupac Shakur's socially conscious poetry and fiery, political lyrics are forever cemented in music history, but the legendary rapper also had a burgeoning career in acting. Upon the time of his tragic murder in September 1996, Tupac was becoming all the more prolific as a performer, his filmography growing even after his death. What's more, there was a chance that, eventually, audiences would have seen the rapper/actor pop up in big-budget movies like the "Star Wars" prequels, in which George Lucas may have cast him as Mace Windu.
Tupac was always involved in the world of the stage ever since his childhood days at the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he acted in Shakespeare productions that would influence his depictions of gang conflicts. The artist's breakout lead role was in the 1992 crime drama "Juice," in which future Mace Windu actor Samuel L. Jackson also appeared in. Besides this,...

October is here, which means a bevy of new titles available to watch on HBO and HBO Max. First and foremost, however, we have the highly anticipated “The White Lotus” Season 2, which debuts on Oct. 30 on HBO and will be streaming on HBO Max at the same time. New location, new characters (save for Jennifer Coolidge from Season 1), same music.
Also new this month is the docuseries follow-up “The Vow: Part Two,” further exploring the inner sanctum of Nxivm, which debuts on Oct. 17 on HBO and is streaming on HBO Max the same night. There’s also “Avenue 5” Season 2 on Oct. 10 and the new Chip and Joanna Gaines series “Fixer Upper: The Castle” on Oct. 14 (that one will also debut on Magnolia Network and discovery+ at the same time).
Other noteworthy additions this month include library titles like “Nightcrawler,” “The Witch,” “Terms of Endearment” and the underseen comedy gem “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Things are going pretty, pretty well for HBO and HBO Max at the moment thanks to the smashing success of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. With its list of new releases for October 2022 though, HBO Max appears ready to up the ante even more.
The headlining title on HBO Max this month is undoubtedly The White Lotus season 2 on Oct. 30. Mike White’s freshly-Emmy-winning comedy looked to be a one-off after season 1. But cooler heads prevailed and the series is now returning in an anthology format. What will season 2 look like? Guess we’ll find out when the show checks in to Sicily later this month.
Aside from The White Lotus, HBO also has a few other TV shows of note this month. The torturously titled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler debuts its third season on Oct. 6. That will be followed by Avenue 5 season 2 on Oct.

R.L. Stine fans, rejoice! We seem to be the middle of a renaissance for projects based on the writing of "The Stephen King of Kids Horror." Thanks to the popularity of Leigh Janiak's terrific "Fear Street" film trilogy, Netflix is reported to be cooking up even more movies based on Stine's slasher-mystery property. There's also a new live-action "Goosebumps" TV show in development at Disney+, which is already home to the lesser-known but genuinely sturdy "Just Beyond" anthology inspired by Stine's genre-blending graphic novel series of the same name.
Elsewhere, shooting is now underway on "Zombie Town," a film based on yet another one of Stine's horror books for younger readers. Published in 2012, the novel follows 12-year-old friends Mike and Karen as they head out to see the titular zombie flick in a theater, only for movie's brain-hungry monsters to lurch off the screen and begin wreaking havoc on their unsuspecting town.

Peter Aykroyd, the former cast member and writer on “Saturday Night Live” and brother to Dan Aykroyd, has died. He was believed to be 66. A cause of death has not been released.
Aykroyd’s passing was announced on Saturday’s Simu Liu-hosted episode of “Saturday Night Live.” The program aired a tribute to the late comic in the form of a short film that he had starred in titled “The Java Junkie.” The noir parody features Aykroyd as a buggy character darting around town to satiate his coffee addiction. Dan Aykroyd is back in action reprising one of his most iconic characters, Ray Stantz, for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which Sony is set to release Nov. 19.
And while he’s thrilled to be involved in the new baton-passing franchise chapter — directed by Jason Reitman and produced by Ivan Reitman, who helmed the first two Ghostbusters and is Jason’s father — the 69-year-old icon also has plenty of thoughts about the state of comedy; the new Saturday Night Live cast; his friend, the late John Candy; and his most notorious bomb, 1991’s Nothing But Trouble, among other topics.

In terms of being outlandish, Nothing but Trouble was certainly able to take that tile and run with it since the whole premise was something that just reeked of crazy, which made it perfect for the 90s since it was helping to establish an identity for the decade, even if it was still more or less building it up and had kind of an 80s feel to it. There’s likely enough problematic content in the movie as it stands that it might have to be adjusted a bit for the current era, but all in all the prospect of finding

25 years ago today, audiences first saw Kevin Costner’s turn as Robin Hood on the big screen. It was on June 14, 1991 that Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves opened in theaters. Facing off against Costner’s heroic outlaw was Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham, just three years after he made his first movie appearance in a role that would become a new classic villain, Hans Gruber in Die Hard. Rickman and Morgan Freeman got critical approval for their performances. Costner and Christian Slater, not so much. Both were nominated for Golden Raspberry Awards for Robin Hood, for Worst Actor and Worst Supporting Actor, respectively. Costner “won” his award, while Slater “lost” to Dan Ackroyd in Nothing but Trouble. Also part of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’ legacy: “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You.” Believe it or not, the theme ballad that Bryan Adams bleated out for this movie earned him an Oscar nomination. But Raspberries or no Raspberries, Oscars or no Oscars, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves found its audience. It was the second-highest grossing movie of 1991, beaten only by Terminator 2: Judgement Day. And it was viewed countless times on VHS for years after that. Other notable June 14 happenings in pop culture history: • 1940: Jimmy Stewart film The Mortal Storm opened in theaters. • 1958: The indoor Alice in Wonderland ride opened next to the Mad Tea Party teacups ride in Disneyland. It was also the day the Columbia Sailing Ship first took passengers around Tom Sawyer Island. • 1959: The Matterhorn Bobsleds, Submarine Voyage, and the Monorail opened at Disneyland. Over 2,000 celebrities, members of the press, and dignitaries attended, including Vice President Richard Nixon. • 1965: Paul McCartney recorded the song “Yesterday” at what is now known as Abbey Road Studios in London. McCartney recorded it without the rest of the group, just with a string quartet, his vocals, and an acoustic guitar, making it essentially the first solo performance by the band. He recorded the song in two takes. • 1969: John Lennon and Yoko Ono pre-recorded an interview with David Frost that would air on July 10 that year. Lennon said in the interview, “We're trying to sell peace, like a product, you know, and sell it like people sell soap or soft drinks.” • 1970: Eric Clapton’s new band, Derek and the Dominos, gave their first live performance, at London’s Lyceum Theatre. • 1972: Simon & Garfunkel reunited to perform “Bridge Over Troubled Water” at a fundraising concert for presidential candidate George McGovern at New York’s Madison Square Garden. • 1980: The Pretenders fired bassist Pete Farndon, whose drug use had led to an increasingly strained relationship with his bandmates. • 1980: Billy Joel began six weeks atop the Billboard album chart with Glass Houses. • 1985: Family Feud, which had debuted in 1976, aired its final episode on ABC until CBS re-launched the game show in 1988. • 1989: The game Tetris was released for Game Boy in Japan. A North American release followed in July. • 1990: CBS, which had been the national broadcaster for the NBA since 1973, televised an NBA game for the final time. It was Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Detroit Pistons and Portland Trail Blazers. • 1996: Jim Carrey movie The Cable Guy opened in U.S. and Canadian theaters. • 2002: The Bourne Identity and the Sarah Michelle Gellar Scooby-Doo movie opened in theaters. • 2003: Helen Mirren had the order of Dame bestowed upon her when Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II published the list of those she’d chosen to promote to the Order of the British Empire. Three years later, Mirren portrayed Elizabeth II on film in The Queen. Sting and 007 actor Roger Moore were also conferred with the title of “Sir” on this day. • 2011: Andy Grammer released his self-titled debut studio album. Birthdays: Juno writer Diablo Cody (turns 38 today), singer Boy George (55), Reign actor Torrance Coombs (33), Pretty Little Liars actress Lucy Hale (27), actor-motivational speaker J.R. Martinez (33), Glee actor Kevin McHale (28), Falling Skies actor Will Patton (62), Austin Powers director Jay Roach (59), Spy Kids actor Daryl Sabara (24), Blindspot actor Sullivan Stapleton (39)...

The Movie Doctors is more than Wittertainment jumping from the airwaves to the printed page. Here's our review...
How do you write a review about The Movie Doctors, by Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode? Well, you just…, ah I suspect many of you got there first.
And if you did, this is your book. A fascinating, broad and beautifully presented collection of arguments, articles, diagrams and disputes that leap from the airwaves of Wittertainment (aka The Kermode & Mayo Film Review on Radio 5 Live/Radio Five/Five Live/we keep forgetting what they're officially called these days) and onto the printed page, there’s plenty that others could learn from this.
For in an era where books for fans of things have a habit of taking that audience for granted, that’s absolutely what The Movie Doctors doesn’t do. Running to over 300 pages, and with sky-high production values,...

If there's an antidote for raising teenagers, Will Smith needs a prescription.
The Concussion star sat down with Ellen DeGeneres on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Thursday and dished on everything from his upcoming tour to the trials and tribulations of parenting.

"Ya know, like when people come up to you, 'Hey, Will how you doing?' 'Oh man, I got teenagers. Simplex 2 man, simplex 2,' " he laughed. "It takes everything you have to raise teenagers."

Throughout a very prolific and sometimes uneven career as an incredibly notable genre filmmaker, Wes Craven’s aesthetic often grapples with issues of revenge and adolescence, having given birth to the iconic The Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream franchises, both series exploring notions of metatextual reinvention. Cutting his teeth with grindhouse horror titles that have since been re-made, many of his more obscure offerings have languished in the critical realm of inconsequential desolation. But it’s his 1991 offering The People Under the Stairs which is worthy of reappraisal, arguably the filmmaker’s best and most bizarre work. Campy, hysterical, creepy, and replete with a socially conscious message, it’s an early 90s cult classic that retains its power to delight and weird out.

This week's "Ask Drew" includes a moment I suspected would happen at some point, and now that it has, I'll address it here. I don't like the answer I gave to one of the questions. I don't think it's a bad answer, but it's not the right answer. On the way home, I thought of a far more appropriate response, and so I feel like I owe it to the person who sent the question in the first place. Basically, he asked me if there are any truly bad films that I love. I sort of dismissed the idea of "guilty pleasures" and then talked a little bit about "Buckaroo Banzai," but I think that's sort of me dodging the question. There are terrible movies I love. I think "Hudson Hawk" is a train wreck. I don't think I can defend it at all. It makes me laugh like a maniac in places,...

“Orphan Black” continues to hit the ground running. Last week’s episode left us with the cliffhanger that perhaps we all should’ve suspected was inevitable: Helena (Tatiana Maslany) a.k.a. Crazy Clone/Sarah’s twin sister is alive. Still blissfully unaware to that fact, Sarah and Art (Kevin Hanchard) attempt to figure out where the Prolethians who abducted Kira (Skyler Wexler) have taken her. Felix (Jordan Gavaris) shows up and greets Art, then exclaiming, “I can’t believe you let a cop into Clone club.” The feeling is mutual for Art, but he’s just glad that now he can make sense of this whole doppelgänger [...]

Goat herders. They’ve always been nothing but trouble, if you ask me. Wasn’t it a goat path that caused the deaths of Leonidas and his 300 at the Hot Gates? And now, goat herders are the reason Mark Wahlberg and his Navy SEALs buddies have to fight for their lives against a gazillion Taliban soldiers in the mountains of Afghanistan. I’m telling you, goat herders. Nothing but trouble throughout history. Anyways, check out the latest trailer for Peter Berg’s “Lone Survivor”. I’m not sure what they’re trying to imply here, but Mark Wahlberg’s hero character sounds a little, uh, dense? Based on The New York Times bestselling true story of heroism, courage and survival, Lone Survivor tells the incredible tale of four Navy SEALs on a covert mission to neutralize a high-level al-Qaeda operative who are ambushed by the enemy in the mountains of Afghanistan.

A stage actress who was featured in a handful of movies in the 1910s, Boland came into her own as a stellar film supporting player in the early ’30s, initially at Paramount and later at most other Hollywood studios. First, the bad news: TCM’s "Summer Under the Stars" Mary Boland Day will feature only two movies from Boland’s Paramount period: the 1935 Best Picture Academy Award nominee Ruggles of Red Gap, which TCM has shown before, and one TCM premiere. Hard to believe it's been 30 years since the Griswold family first took to the road in "National Lampoon's Vacation." The anticipation for Drew Holcomb’s fourth studio album, his third with band The Neighbors, is finally drawing to an end. The release, Good Light, was recorded in Memphis at Ardent Studios, and displays Holcomb’s strength as a songwriter while lyrically celebrating his devotion to wife and bandmate, Ellie, and daughter Emmylou. Many of the tracks read like love letters. “These lyrics are all quick images that to me are part of the way a love can be defined,” said Holcomb about track “Nothing But Trouble.” “California is where Ellie and I honeymooned, Wildflower is our favorite Tom Petty record that...
