John Wright, the film editor who received Oscar nominations for his work on Jan de Bont’s Speed and The Hunt for Red October, one of six movies he cut for John McTiernan, has died. He was 79.
Wright died April 20 at his home in Calabasas after a battle with prostate and bone cancer, his wife of 57 years, Jane Wright, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Wright’s résumé also included such other high-profile films as Sam Peckinpah’s Convoy (1978), Paul Michael Glaser’s The Running Man (1987), Stan Dragoti’s Necessary Roughness (1991), John Woo’s Broken Arrow (1996), Bryan Singer’s X-Men (2000), James Gartner’s Glory Road (2006) and Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk (2008).
He collaborated with directors Mel Gibson on The Passion of the Christ (2004) and Apocalypto (2006); with Graeme Clifford on Frances (1982) and Gleaming the Cube (1989); and with Randall Wallace on Secretariat (2010) and Heaven Is for Real (2014).

Christopher Walken is an outrageously accomplished actor of stage, film and television. And now, at the age of 79, he’s seeking to win his first ever Emmy Award. He’s looking to do this in the Best Drama Supporting Actor category for playing Burt Goodman on the Apple TV Plus series, “Severance.”
Walken’s submission is the season’s fifth episode, “The Grim Barbarity of Optics and Design.” Irving (John Turturro) is about to try and go visit Burt in the Optics and Design (O&d) department at Lumon Industries when the office printer prints several copies of a disturbing painting that shows the O&d workers slaughtering the Macrodata Refinement (Mdr) workers. As Mark (Adam Scott) and Helly (Britt Lower) make their way down the corridors, we see Burt in a conference room practicing saying something to himself.

Of the half dozen TV programs that each received at least five acting Emmy notices in 2022, “Squid Game” is the only one with no past contenders in its nominated cast. The quintet of Korean performers recognized for their work in the Netflix series’ first season range in age from 28 to 77 and have screen acting resumes that date as far back as 1994. One of the show’s three supporting nominees, Park Hae-soo, has earned this mention 15 years into his career, which has consisted of equal parts stage, film, and TV work.
Park has decided to have Emmy voters consider his performance in the inaugural season finale of “Squid Game,” entitled “One Lucky Day.” At the beginning of the installment, his character, Cho Sang-woo, stands as one of two finalists in the central contest, along with Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae). Having survived five deadly games in pursuit of a massive cash prize,...

The first season of “Severance,” which originally streamed from February to April on Apple TV+, proved quite popular with Emmy voters this year. The show reaped 14 nominations in the primetime drama categories and blazed a trail as the first Apple program to compete for the top honor of Best Drama Series. Of the three male actors recognized for their work on “Severance,” only former Best Comedy Guest Actor champ John Turturro has won an Emmy before. Four decades into his career, he now holds the distinction of having earned TV academy notices for guest, lead, and supporting performances.
Turturro has submitted the seventh episode of “Severance,” entitled “Defiant Jazz,” for Best Drama Supporting Actor consideration. In the installment, his character, Irving Bailiff, and his Lumon Industries coworkers are met with stricter security measures after they begin learning too many of the nondescript company’s dark secrets. When Irving discovers that...

Two years after winning his first Best Drama Supporting Actor Emmy for his portrayal of Cory Ellison on Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” Billy Crudup has earned another TV academy notice for his work on the program’s second season. If he succeeds on this outing, he will follow Stuart Margolin (“The Rockford Files”), Michael Conrad (“Hill Street Blues”), Larry Drake (“L.A. Law”), Ray Walston (“Picket Fences”), Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) and Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”) as the seventh man to win multiple supporting Emmys for a drama series. After Conrad, he would also be the second actor to receive this award for each of his show’s first two seasons.
Crudup has submitted the season two premiere episode of “The Morning Show” for Emmy consideration this year. In the installment, entitled “My Least Favorite Year,” Ellison is fired from his Uba network CEO job but soon...

One of the most surprising television shows to emerge this season is Apple TV+’s “Severance,” a workplace thriller set in the mysterious Lumon Industries that subverts the audience’s expectations from its opening scene to the final shot of its climactic season finale. As Caroline Framke, chief television critic for Variety, observes, “‘Severance’ becomes the best kind of TV surprise: one that rewards early patience with a real knockout of a back half.” The series has proven to be a word of mouth hit, and has gained a ton of traction in the lead-up to Emmy nominations voting, which begins June 16.
Here are my top five reasons why “Severance” can prove to be an Emmys powerhouse this season.
1. It’s streaming on Apple TV+

Patricia MacLachlan, author of the best-selling and award-winning 1985 children’s book Sarah, Plain and Tall and its sequels that were turned into three popular early 1990s Hallmark Hall of Fame TV-movies starring Glenn Close, died March 31 at her home in Williamsburg, Mass. She was 84.
Her death was confirmed by her son John MacLachlan to The New York Times. No cause was specified.
The book series and the three films chronicled the adventures of a Maine woman named Sarah Wheaton (played by Close in the movies) who travels to Kansas in 1910 as a mail-order bride to a widower and care for his two young children. Christopher Walken played widower Jacob Witting in all three movies.
The three films based on the book series were co-written by MacLachlan: Skylark in 1993, and Sarah, Plain and Tall: Winter’s End in 1999. Two other books written by MacLachlan outside the Sarah series also were adapted...

Apple TV Plus is finalizing its Emmy plans for acclaimed hit “Severance,” which just had its season finale last week. Variety has learned exclusively how the streamer plans on dividing its large ensemble into the drama categories.
Stars Adam Scott and Britt Lower will try their luck in the lead drama actor and lead drama actress races. At the same time, Patricia Arquette, John Turturro, Zach Cherry, Tramell Tillman and Jen Tullock will angle for supporting drama attention. Perhaps the biggest mystery of who may end up where, Christopher Walken will not be submitted for guest actor in a drama, as originally presumed by Apple because of his role in more than half of the episodes of the season. He will compete alongside his co-stars Turturro and Tillman in supporting actor drama. The deadline for entering programs for primetime programming is May 12, so any of these plans are subject to change.

Greylock, we hardly knew ye.
That's because The Republic of Sarah Season 1 Episode 13 marked the end of the series, with the cancellation announcement coming with only one episode remaining.
Since the season was filmed months before airing, there was no opportunity for closure, with most characters facing new, uncertain futures following the finale.
Probably we should have realized that The Republic of Sarah wouldn't be with us long when it landed on The CW, home primarily for superhero, paranormal, and science fiction programming.
CW stuck it in the doldrums of summer, with ill-fitting lead-ins in first All American and then Roswell, New Mexico. Both are quality shows but aren't particularly compatible with "Sarah."
Perhaps we should be grateful that a network was giving us something other than a reality show which celebrates the morally or ethically ambivalent.
"Sarah" had an intriguing hook but one that required a viewer actually pay attention.
