With a little of Megan's help, Lexi decides to take a business approach to finding a relationship using hiring techniques. Meanwhile, both Jane and Michael are saddled with legal fees over their courtroom time, but whereas Jane wants to cut costs, the greedy Michael wants to continue to splurge money. Then Michael saves the live of a wealthy patient, named Perry Hutchins, who gives him a Ferrari as a grateful gift. Also, Kyle continues to keep his suspected sterility from Amanda who soon becomes disturbed by Kyle's moody behavior, which includes an impromptu trip to scout bands in New York for the Jazz Club where he goes overboard with the seedy club owner, named Ricky, and his groupies.

Michael resorts to hustling the Whilshire's medical funds to get $100,000 to invest in Perry's shady business deal, and later regrets it when Perry skips town with the money. Meanwhile, Eve tries to intervene to settle the riff between Amanda and Kyle but not does not succeed due to Amanda's anger and Kyle's further decent into excess. Also, Megan's secrecy about her work to find a man for Lexi makes Ryan suspect that she's returned to her old prostitution profession.

After being tipped off by a drunken Kyle about Eve's past, Peter travels to her home town in Oakdale to conduct his own investigation and meets the parents of Eve's deceased football player boyfriend who still bitterly hate her for the death of their son. Meanwhile, Ryan confronts Kyle about his drug and alcoholism, while Amanda decides to reach out to Kyle despite his problems. Also, Megan continues her secret work for Lexi while Ryan grows more suspicious about her work. Then after a confrontation, she clears the air over her man-searching for Lexi. With Peter out of town, Michael takes over as temporary chief of staff at Whilshire, while a new nurse named Audrey presents problems when after Michael passes her over for a promotion, she brings sexual harassment charges against him.

As Valentine's Day approaches, Kyle and Ryan's domineering and militant father, Mack, arrives in town for a visit for Kyle's birthday where he soon causes trouble for both of his sons during a dinner with them and Amanda and Megan. Meanwhile, Jane throws Michael out of the apartment after finding out about the sexual harassment charges against him after a confrontation with Audrey. Peter suspends Michael, while the rest of the hospital staff refuses to support Michael in his lawsuit knowing of his past reputation. Lexi continues to pressure Megan to find her soul mate, and she eventually discovers who is her perfect match: Ryan. Also, Peter objects to Eve leaving town with the Jazz Club band for a gig in San Francisco. At the end, Michael secretly meets with his secret lover/partner in crime, Audrey, and congratulates her for a job well done.

Kyle disappears after he torches the building site of his and Amanda's house where he reveals his secret to her about him being sterile. Meanwhile, Michael sets plans with Audrey for her to break off the lawsuit against him so he can sue the hospital for wrongful termination. But when the equally devious Audrey demands an huge sum of money from Michael for her services, he refuses. So Audrey sets up a compromising video shot of her and Michael to blackmail him. While worrying about Kyle's whereabouts, Amanda fires Rikki G's band from the Jazz Club after blaming them for Kyle's desperate condition, much to Eve's anger. Also, Jane and Ryan travel to a Mexican resort to land an account where Lexi also goes there in Megan's place with the intent to snare Ryan for herself.

After Amanda's visit to Kyle (now committed to a rehab clinic) does not go well at all, rumors begin to fly about Amanda and Peter getting chummy with each other. In Mexico, Lexi and Ryan brainstorm on an ad campaign, then compete with each other to see who will take credit for their idea. Meanwhile, Michael starts a counter-lawsuit against Whilshire Hospital for $2 million in damages, while Audrey continues to hound him after he makes up with Jane. Eve, jealous about Peter and Amanda's relationship, sings her latest gig at the wrong place at the wrong time and gets arrested. At the end, when Amanda thinks that she's pregnant, the news sends Kyle into a jealous rage and he accidentally injures her while fighting with Peter.

While Amanda is in the hospital for her injuries, the rumors about her and Peter's alleged affair only strengthen among everybody at Melrose, despite their denials, which sends both Kyle and Eve packing, he for Boston, and she for a getaway with an old friend from prison named Jackie. Meanwhile, Audrey splits town, but not after double crossing Michael when she sends the videotape of them together to Peter, and Jane accidentally sees it as well which reveals all of Michael's sins. Also, Lexi researches Ryan's past and travels to New York and meets three of his ex-girlfriends whom he deserted after proposing to them.

Lexi finally launches her plan to break up Ryan and Megan by persuading Megan to propose marriage to Ryan first in hopes that he will panic and leave in a huff as he did with his other former girlfriends. Dr. Ilene Schulman, the Chief Resident at Whilshire Hospital and an old foe of both Michael and Peter, returns and threatens both of them as they vow to fight her ruthless, tightfisted corporate policy at the hospital of denying people medical treatment for their lack of insurance. When Ilene discovers Eve's background, Eve's friend, Jackie, decides to take matters into her own hands. Amanda, now reconciled with Kyle, can't balance finances regarding her current and future homes, and starts to turn a cold shoulder towards Eve. Also, Jane moves out of Melrose to get away from Michael and she moves into his vacant beach front house and throws a housewarming party for some of the Melrose residents.

Shortly after proposing to Megan, Ryan makes a run for it according to Lexi's plan, but not for the reasons she suspects. Instead, Ryan travel to a catholic boarding school in New York to visit his eight-year-old daughter, Sarah, whom no one knows about, and who's in the care of his sister-in-law, Terry, who still blames Ryan for the death of his wife in a car accident years ago. Upon returning to Los Angeles, Ryan keeps his promise to Sarah of not ever marrying again by breaking up with Megan by telling her about his fling in Mexico with Lexi, but he also confides in Kyle about his secret. Meanwhile, Eve faces a return to prison because of her involvement with Jackie. But a quick intervention by Amanda saves Eve from that. Michael rallies the hospital staff for a protest as Dr. Shulman makes a play against Peter to bring him down. Eve also learns that the land in Texas formerly owned by Peter's late father is more valuable than anyone thought when oil is discovered on the property. Also, Amanda puts more time into her advertising company than with helping Kyle try to sell the Melrose apartment complex, driving him to work out his frustrations at Jane's house.

Michael and Lexi join forces and travel to Poughkeepsie, New York to investigate Ryan's secret and end up masquerading as a reverend and nun, respectively, to get inside the catholic school where they finally meet Ryan's daughter, Sarah. Alone with Sarah later, Lexi pretends to be Megan to ask the little girl more about Ryan. Back in Los Angeles, Eve and Peter make separate investments with their windfall when Eve wants to invest in the Upstairs Jazz Club, and Peter decides to buy out the hospital. Meanwhile, Amanda sets Megan after Lexi's clients to bring them in for A.W.A., while at the same time, Amanda learns that an anonymous financier has asked to buy the Melrose apartment complex. Also, Jane meets a Jim Rogers, a potentially new client she considers her "knight in shining armor," but who becomes obsessed with her after a one-night stand. But the final twist comes when Lexi reveals to be the one that bought the Melrose complex and her first things are halving everyone's rent as well as evicting Amanda and Kyle.

Having caught Megan in bed with Michael, a new conflict begins between Ryan, Megan, Michael and Lexi which soon turns nasty and makes Ryan think about getting closer to his daughter Sarah. Michael also tries to get back together with Megan, but with little avail. Meanwhile, Amanda tries to land a prospective new client for A.W.A., a devious millionaire named Tony Marlin, who suggests a veiled condition for his business. When Marlin meets Eve for the first time at the Jazz Club, he tells Amanda that Eve should be the one for a commercial advertisement. Michael and Peter put the hospital psychiatrist, Dr. Louis Visconti, as a spy on Dr. Irene Shulman to find what she's up to, but they don't expect for the two of them to get as close as they do. Also, Kyle begins to criticize Amanda's return devotion to her work than being with him which leads him to seek companionship with Jane whom they are living with at the beach house. At the end, Sarah runs away from the catholic school and somehow arrives in Los Angeles where she runs into Michael and Megan at the Melrose complex.

Amanda re-awakens her ruthless, take-no-prisoners, greedy business attitude when she begins firing staff, including Jane, to finance Marlin's test commercial which will star Eve. Eve then tells Peter that she cannot go away on a vacation with him but must go to Maui to film the commercial for Marlin's cruise liners, where Peter tells Eve to bring him along. Meanwhile, Michael and Lexi come clean to both Megan and Ryan, respectively, about their trip to New York investigating Ryan's past. Lexi then tries to court a favor with Sarah by giving her a large doll house, while Ryan does not know where he now stands over his relationship with Megan and his being with his daughter Sarah. Also, Kyle continues to resent Amanda's self-serving attitude and threatens to end their marriage over her dismissing Jane from the agency.

On the cruise liner sailing along the Mexican coast to film the commercial, Marlin orders Amanda to run an interference with Peter to keep him away from Eve as he sets his plan to seduce her. Back in Los Angeles, Lexi, with Michael as her co-conspirator/lover, goes after Amanda's former staff and clients, and even meets with Marlin's wife who scares Lexi at gunpoint by telling her to stay away from him. Undaunted, Lexi manages to steal the film of Marlin's commercial from Megan and destroys it with Michael's help, then sets her sights to snare Marlin for her own agency. Meanwhile, Terry and Ryan square off over custody of Sarah, who changes things making an abuse claim against her aunt. Also, Kyle and Jane question their relationship and realize that they are meant for each other after all.

Amanda sees her own finish to her agency after her finished film product for Marlin somehow gets destroyed which leads to Amanda deciding to shut down her company. Meanwhile, Peter, feeling guilty about his fling with Amanda, tells Eve that their marriage is over and he sets his sights once again on Amanda. But Eve does not take it gracefully in which she goes over the deep end and decides to plan revenge of her own. Terry lobbies for a bigger place in Ryan's life to be with Sarah by coming on to him, which quickly arises jealousy in Megan, until Ryan proposes to Megan once again. Jane also shows a bit of jealousy when Kyle shows his concern over Amanda closing her agency. Also, Michael gets jealous as Lexi tends to business with Marlin to land his account.

After Marlin accidentally dies from an overdose of Viagra while being with Lexi in her apartment, she asks Michael for help to take Marlin's dead body back to his house to cover up any guilt of being indirectly responsible for his death, but Michael demands a price: to be with Lexi by commitment. Meanwhile, Terry tries to interfere with Ryan and Megan's coming wedding by revealing her feelings, and her body, to Ryan. Repressed memories about the Demarr football player murder are triggered in Eve. So, Peter asks Dr. Visconti to find the source of the memories, while Eve is befriended by Lexi after seeing that Eve is slowly moving to the brink of insanity and is capable of violence against Amanda and Peter. Also, Jane wonders if she may be pregnant and hesitates on telling Kyle. At the end, after the wedding of Ryan and Megan, Terry suddenly appears and kidnaps Sarah in her car which leads to a high-speed chase with Ryan which ends then Terry's car crashes into a telephone pole.

In the thrilling series finale, Terry and Sarah survive the car accident where Ryan finally makes amends meet between Megan and Terry, who agrees to leave town and Ryan to start over his life with Megan and Sarah. Meanwhile, Eve's sanity finally cracks when she kidnaps both Lexi and Michael as part of her plan to murder Amanda and Peter and set Lexi up for the fall, while Amanda's guilt over the Demarr football murder surfaces for everyone. Peter begins to have other problems when Irene Shulman starts a new plan to bring him down by charging him with mutual funds charges. After Jane tells Kyle that she's pregnant, he's eager to start his life over with her, but Jane suspects that Michael may be the father of her unborn child, but doesn't tell Kyle. Also, Michael tries to pressure Lexi to marry him, but she refuses for her career at Thomas-Sterling-Conway comes first. Fleeing from both a police investigation and the murderous Eve stalking them, Amanda and Peter take refuge at Louis Visconti's mountain cabin. When the police close in, Amanda and Peter fake their own deaths by blowing up the cabin. In the end, Peter and Amanda skip the country and secretly marry on a remote tropical island, while Eve is on her way to a lunatic asylum with no one to help her. Ryan and Megan live happily ever after as does Kyle and Jane. While a lonely Lexi continues running her advertising company, Michael, having covered for Peter and Amanda and receiving $1 million in bribe money, settles with his new job finally being the Chief of Staff at Wilshire Memorial with a large-breasted nurse as his secretary. "Life is good", says Michael.
