Good afternoon, it’s been a huge week in international TV and Max Goldbart is here to guide you through. Read on.
Berlinale Controversy
Dramatic yet unsurprising: Andreas and Zac have penned a string of exclusives over the past few days that concluded with the Berlin Film Festival’s high-profile u-turn Thursday afternoon, disinviting members of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) to the opening ceremony after initially sending invitations to five politicians from the party. The move felt simultaneously dramatic yet unsurprising. The industry outcry over the AfD’s presence at the Berlinale opening ceremony had been extensive, and anger was also growing among Berlinale staff. “Over the past few days, there has been an intense discussion in the cultural sector, in the press, and on social media as well as within the Berlinale team about the invitations of AfD politicians, a right-wing extremist party, to the opening of the Berlinale,...

Samuel L Jackson and Dave Bautista are to star in Afterburn, a post-apocalyptic adventure about a treasure hunter racing to recover the iconic Mona Lisa.
Indiana Jones’ insistence that ‘it belongs in a museum’ never gets old, but we might be poised to hear a new variant on the adventuring archaeologist’s popular refrain. As details of Dave Bautista’s next film emerge, we’re hoping that hearing Bautista yell that ‘it belongs in an art gallery!’ will soon sit in the popular culture pantheon of quotes, right next to Harrison Ford’s enduring classic.
Why? Well, for his next action flick, Bautista plays a treasure hunter searching for the Mona Lisa in a post-apocalyptic future. If that wasn’t a wild enough premise, it looks like he might have to contend with Samuel L Jackson (who plays a freedom fighter named Valentine) along the way. Oh, and there’s...

A formidable actress, Laura Dern has been working in Hollywood since age 5. At 13 years old, the daughter of icons Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern became the youngest Miss Golden Globe and soon thereafter earned critical acclaim with her breakout role in Blue Velvet. The 1986 film also marked the first time Dern and director David Lynch would work together throughout her career, a pairing that continues with Twin Peaks’ celebrated return on Showtime.

It wasn't enough that the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. saved "Enlightened" from cancellation by nominating it for Best Comedy Series. Now leading lady Laura Dern has emerged as an early frontrunner for an Emmy following her surprise Golden Globe win. Dern bested the frontrunner -- newcomer Zooey Deschanel ("New Girl") -- as well as previous Emmy contenders Tina Fey ("30 Rock"), Laura Linney ("The Big C") and Amy Poehler ("Parks and Recreation"). This is Dern's third Globe after previously taking it for telefilms "Recount" (2008) and "Afterburn" (1992). Dern was Emmy-nominated for both of those performances but lost both times. Comedy Actor champ Matt LeBlanc ("Episodes") lost his Emmy bid last September to Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory") who wasn't even nominated by the Globes this year, although he won this race last year. LeBlanc plays an exaggerated versio...

Hot on the heels of two Golden Globe nominations, HBO has picked up "Enlightened" for a second season. The ratings-challenged dramedy was a surprising inclusion in the Globes' Best Comedy/Musical Series category while Laura Dern picked up an expected bid for Best Comedy/Musical Actress. Dern -- who won Globes for telefilms "Recount" (2008, supporting) and "Afterburn" (1992, lead) and reaped Emmy nods for both -- could well prevail again this year. She does, however, face a challenge from Zooey Deschanel ("New Girl"). Both actresses compete for new series as did the last two champs: Laura Linney ("The Big C") and Toni Collette ("United States of Tara"). The news from HBO was not all good as Thomas Jane's second consecutive Globe bid for Best Comedy Actor could not save "Hung" from getting the chop after three seasons. Critics and audiences alike failed to embrace this show about a hig...

• Tom Wilkinson won a Golden Globe to match the Emmy Award he won for this supporting role as Benjamin Franklin in "John Adams" last fall. He is also nominated this evening as lead actor in a telefilm or miniseries for playing a modern day political advisor, James Baker, in "Recount." • Laura Dern has a long history with the Golden Globes, including being Miss Golden Globe back in 1982. However, despite one lead actress movie nod ("Rambling Rose," 1991) and two leading actress telefilm noms ("Afterburn" in 1992 and "The Baby Dance" in 1998), she was winless until tonight. Unlike fellow supporting winner Wilkinson, Dern did not win an Emmy Award for her work...
