For those of us who weren’t lucky enough to attend a Beatles concert in the 1960s, Ron Howard’s Eight Days a Week just might be the next best thing. The 2016 documentary traces the band’s rise from a cramped and dank cellar in Liverpool to record breaking television appearances, jam packed stadiums, and—ultimately—rock immortality. Lovingly assembled through rare and often unseen fan home movie footage, Howard’s film also draws on more familiar material—restored to the highest echelons of HD— and new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. All told, it’s a joyous...

Guy fondly revisits Scott Bakula-starring time travel series Quantum Leap, the closest we’ll ever come to a live-action Mr Benn…
Throughout the 90s, Starfleet’s Captain Archer bounced around time meddling in other people’s lives, aided and abetted by the third-tier villain from Beverly Hills Cop 2 in holographic form. No, this wasn’t a fever dream – this was Quantum Leap: possibly the lowest-key sci-fi show ever televised (and all the better for it).
I’d argue that Quantum Leap was one of the best sci-fi shows that really didn’t need that much in the way of fictionalised science. Indeed, when the plots began to lean on this aspect more heavily, the show seemed to lose sight of what made it great in the first place. The internal logic started to unravel, the plots became increasingly far-fetched, and it even started to become a little (whisper it) naff…...

Dave Appell, the Philadelphia songwriter-producer behind such 1960s rock ’n’ roll hits as “Let’s Twist Again” and “Limbo Rock” from Chubby Checker and Dee Dee Sharp’s “Mashed Potato Time,” has died. He was 92. Appell, who later produced the Tony Orlando and Dawn hits “Knock Three Times” and “Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree,” died Tuesday, his family announced. He lived and had a studio — where he was still working into his 90s — in Cherry Hill, N.J. Starting in the late 1950s, Appell was a mainstay for a decade at the

While ‘The Shocking Twist’ sounds like an Edm remix of a Chubby Checker song, its actual purpose is to deliver something unexpected to film-goers or book readers or game players. When done right, these moments are iconic – be it the end of The Sixth Sense, Reservoir Dogs or the death of Aerith in Final Fantasy VII. They can also be really dumb, and pose countless questions about the plot points that came before – like in The Dark Knight Rises, or in many of the games on this very list you’re about to read about and hopefully enjoy.
A plot twist, like what your Facebook feed says about handguns, is a tool. In the right hands, it can make a great game legendary, in the wrong hands, it’ll massacre any and all positive feelings you have toward a title. Twists must be used responsibility and with much care,...

Chubby Checker's lawsuit over a smartphone app that claims to measures penis size is the latest in a checkered record at attempting to maintain relevancy through the twists and turns of pop culture.
The app is is called the "Chubby Checker" referring to a slang term for an erection.
The 71-year-old Checker, whose real name is Ernest Evans, is suing Hewlett Packard and its subsidiary Palm, Inc. for $500 million, claiming the app associates his name with obscene, sexual connotation and images, without giving him "compensation for the unauthorized use of the Chubby Checker name and trademark," Webosnation.com reported.
The lawsuit comes as Checker tries to reinvigorate his career by promoting "Changes," a new single.
"With all of this activity surrounding the excitement and the legend, we're more interested in airplay than litigation," Checker said in a statement to The Huffington Post. "As they say in the legal community,...

When AfterElton asked me if I'd be interested in doing a story on full-frontal male nudity in the movies, I said, “Interested? I've been researching it since I was 12!” What prompted the idea is of course the film Shame, which stars Michael Fassbender as a man addicted to sex. When the film debuted at the Venice Film Festival earlier this year it set off a shockwave because of its sexual explicitness, including a much-discussed full-frontal reveal by Fassbender. Add to that the recent flurry of attention that stills of Jonathan Groff's nude scene in Twelve Thirty hitting the Internet generated, and it seems like these days cinema penises are a trending topic.
Everyone from film critics to Freudian analysts to gender theorists has written about male nudity in film. And sorting through the pronouncements on the male gaze and Lacanian mirrors and power inequities between the sexes in Hollywood...

I didn’t think I would have to insult the intelligence of our readers by pointing out a very simple fact, but based on the first comment we received, I guess I should make something clear. This is a list of our favourite soundtracks of 2011. We are currently working on a list of the best original scores, which should be posted sometime within the week. Let us know if you think we left out any soundtracks you would recommend. Enjoy!
10 – Young Adult
One of the themes of Jason Reitman’s upcoming film Young Adult, is the idea of being stuck in the past, and trying to relive your glory days, and so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack to the film is loathed with 1990s alt-rock cuts. Due December 6th via Rhino Records, the fifteen-track disc features the Replacements, the Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., Teenage Fanclub, Cracker, 4 Non Blondes, Veruca Salt and many more.

In a sea of deceased parents, familial love and self-acceptance, Kristin Cavallari had the least-emotional tale during story week. It may have led to her elimination in the third week of “Dancing with the Stars.”
The audience, the judges, the hosts and Kristin herself seemed shocked at her departure despite consistently high scores. Viewers may have found her dilemma–go to college or move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment–too shallow.

In the late 1950s/early '60s, rock 'n' roll was still in its infancy, drawing from such musically and racially disparate genres as country, R&B, gospel and blues for influence and inspiration. It had only been a few years since Billboard stopped calling R&B songs "race records," and the U.S., especially in the South, remained racially divided, with many black women serving as maids for white families.
Tate Taylor's upcoming film adaptation of the popular 2009 book "The Help" explores the racial and class dynamics between the titular maids and the families they support, with an accompanying soundtrack that draws from folk, country, doo-wop and early rock 'n' roll.
With the exception of "The Living Proof," a new song written and recorded by Mary J. Blige, "The Help" soundtrack is period-appropriate, combining classics such as Bob Dylan's folky "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" and...

Plus, the Johnny Cash project, Alex O'Loughlin's body, Hedwig to Broadway, crushing Rick Malambri, and meet Death Bear.
While promoting that awful looking JLo movie The Backup Plan, Alex O’Loughlin mentioned that the stunts on the Hawaii Five-o pilot were brutal, and there was no way he could take his shirt off for any beach scenes due to the bruising. There goes my entire interest in the show.
Kaley Cuoco, Sheldon’s foil in The Big Bang Theory, has landed her first feature film, I Hop. She’ll play with James Marsden, a slacker who injures the (CGI) son of the Easter Bunny (Russell Brand) and has to take him in. That sounds just awful. I mean really, really awful.
Telescopic Text is a brilliant concept. Just click the words and watch the story grow.
There’s a rumor that Hedwig and the Angry Inch is headed to Broadway,...
