Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, Patrick McGoohan’s The Prisoner was imaginative, unfathomable, and years ahead of its time...
It’s fifty years this month since The Prisoner premiered on British screens, bringing with it blazers, badges and mind-bending bad guys. The show ran for a mere two years, two truncated seasons and seventeen episodes, but its surreal imagery, iconic catchphrases, cerebral plots and absolutely bonkers ending have earned it a perennial place in our cultural consciousness.

George H.W. Bush’s 93rd birthday was a celebration at sea.
The former president, who turned 93 on Sunday, rang in the occasion by setting sail with his loved ones off their Walker’s Point compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, where he and wife Barbara Bush spend their summers.
Bush’s spokesman Jim McGrath tells People it was the 41st president’s “first outing on his boat this summer — one very happy former commander in chief!”
Bush posted a photo of the boat ride on Twitter, captioning it: “What better place for the Gampster to have birthday emails read by a truly wonderful granddaughter in law?...

Allegedly, First Lady Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy made really good waffles. I say “allegedly” not because the waffles attributed to her in various cookbooks aren’t objectively good; they’re actually wonderfully airy and crisp, thanks to an innovative technique involving whipped egg whites and baking powder. But did she ever actually cook or consume the waffles? Does it matter? Didn’t she do enough for her country, between being the exceptionally tolerant wife of a blatantly randy president, the widowed mother of small children expected to bear up beautifully in public after her husband was murdered before her eyes,...

The promo photos from David Bowie's final album have landed, and his looks skews more The Thin White Duke than Ziggy Stardust. On Friday - the icon's 69th birthday and the release day of his new album Blackstar - a striking shot of a beaming Bowie suited up in Thom Browne was posted to his official Instagram account. Shot by Bowie's longtime photographer Jimmy King, the photo is believed to be taken from his last official photo shoot. Bowie died Sunday surrounded by family after battling cancer for 18 months. But the pop culture mainstay was busy creating until the end.

Many happy returns to Daniel Radcliffe, who celebrates his 26th birthday today (July 23)! He may have made a name for himself as heroic wizard Harry Potter, but in the years since Deathly Hallows - Part 2, he's excelled in indie roles and displayed something of a flair for comedy.

Having broken through in Hollywood as a member of the Brat Pack, Downey Jr quelled turbulent times in the '90s to emerge as one of the most bankable big screen stars. Finn reaches the point of no return in this week's episode of the ever-compelling The 100. Here's Caroline's review of Human Trials...
This review contains spoilers.
2.5 Human Trials
What do you do if one of your show's main characters is the most boring person on screen? If your central love story doesn't catch on and viewers immediately jump ship to another pairing? What if he's the one thing people complain about in an otherwise critically adored first series?
If you're The 100, you completely overhaul that character, shift the rest around to fulfil whatever roles are open, and make him the most morally ambiguous and troubled character on the show. That's what they've done with Finn, anyway, and it's drawn a fair amount of criticism. It's fairly safe to say that his actions in this episode, Human Trials, are the major point of no return for him, but it's something that's been...

The scattered group is en route to a reunion thanks to this week's episode of The 100. Here's Caroline's review...
This review contains spoilers.
2.4 Many Happy Returns
Sometimes, having the characters on an ensemble show like The 100 split up and spread across multiple locations can be a great thing, like the early episodes of The 100's second season, but really only if it's temporary. Sooner or later it's good to get everyone back together and on the same page, and Many Happy Returns started that process off.
Clarke is back at Camp Jaha, for one, though Anya wasn't so lucky. The decision to have Anya be the next casualty of this pleasingly kill-happy show is surprising given how much past episodes have asked the audience to invest in the relationship between her and Clarke, and I wonder what lasting effects their truce will have on both Clarke's character...

The 100 is really rolling on all cylinders now. Season 2 has hit the ground running, and there have been no signs of slowing up. If you are not watching this show, you definitely should be. While season 1 was admittedly clunky in the beginning, the second half picked up momentum and it never slowed. It’s easily at the top of my “you should be watching this” list. This week’s episode, Jaha has apparently landed Very far from the Eastern United States (or radiation created a random desert). Clarke and Anya are being tracked, but Clarke regains some leverage. Wick returns, and works on a project with Raven. Bellamy and Finn’s band of misfits loses a member, has a reunion, then further divides. Really, it was quite a rollercoaster. I’ve found Chancellor Jaha’s story extremely compelling. The sequence from a couple episodes ago when he donned a space suit and leaped…...

The 100 added another action packed episode to its ranks tonight. “Many Happy Returns” was filled with cat fights, rescuing damsels in distress, and blood. To top it off, there were plenty of necessary reunions rounding off the hour of drama with just a touch of emotional release.
Lindsey Morgan soaked up an awful lot of screen time tonight as her character, Raven, struggled to adjust to life on the mend. Morgan was the surprise star of season one, and she continues to bring a depth to the cast that it desperately needs. Raven shares a lot of the same bold traits as Clarke (Eliza Taylor), but she has more of a subtle edge to her. As much as they butt heads, they compliment each other that much more.

Last night, CW released the new promo/spoiler clip (below) for their upcoming "The 100" episode 4 of season 2, and it appears to be wicked intense and quite violent as Clarke decides to make some chick her prisoner after getting betrayed while heavy fighting action is going down with some of the other peeps, and more. The episode is titled, "Many Happy Returns.” In the new, 4th episode official plotline: Clarke will end up, getting burned by someone she thought she could trust, prompting her to take matters into her own hands and prove she’s not going down without a battle. Bellamy, Finn and Murphy (guest star Richard Harmon) will race against time to rescue a stranger. Elsewhere, tensions will heat up between Raven and Wick (guest star Steve Talley) while working together, and a surprising reunion occurs. P.J. Pesce directed the episode, and it was written by Kim Shumway.

News broke a couple of weeks ago about the prospect of the BBC hit series Sherlock returning for a one-off special, possibly later this year. After co-creator Mark Gatiss announced with much doom and gloom that Series 4 wouldn’t air until early-2016, star Martin Freeman spoke about Gatiss and fellow co-creator Steven Moffat having a “fantastic, really mouthwatering idea” for a one-off story.
For Sherlock fans like myself, the disappointment of having to wait even longer for Series 4 is balanced tantalisingly by the myriad opportunities that a one-off episode throws up. It’s an opportunity to keep fans on board while teasing where Series 4 will eventually go, much like the mini-episode ‘Many Happy Returns’ did before Series 3 began. It’s also possible that such an episode could be used to address some of the criticisms of Series 3 (though it’s unlikely that they’ll take up any of my recommendations).

It’s been a few months now since series three of Sherlock aired, which means we’re back to the waiting game for who knows how long. With the waiting game comes rewatches, and with rewatches comes noticing things you previously missed, such as all of the references to Conan Doyle’s canon.
Reference hunting (new drinking game maybe?) is one of the best things about Sherlock Holmes adaptations, and creators and Holmes fanboys, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, do not disappoint as they cleverly weave in tons of references every episode. Just like the two previous series’, series 3 had many references and allusions to Conan Doyle’s work, including the introduction of characters such as Mary Morstan, Charles Augustus Magnussen, and Sherlock’s new protégé Wiggins, based on the leader of the Baker Street irregulars in the canon. When Sherlock returned to BBC 1 on New Years Day, with an all-new 90 minute episode, the show achieved the highest ratings for the channel over the entire holiday period – 9.2 million, to be precise – and smashed its own series record at the same time.
The show ended its second season run on BBC 1 on 15th January 2012 with The Reichenbach Fall – an episode that presented viewers with the ultimate cliff-hanging mystery, as Sherlock appeared to fake his own death. The episode capped a strong season that had seen the regular viewership of the show grow from 7.5 million for the first episode of season 1 (A Study In Pink), to averaging over 8 million per episode in season 2.
Creators Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat promised that questions would be answered as Sherlock wound his way back to the small screen in The Empty Hearse. Heralding his arrival was a tantalizing mini-episode released online on Christmas Eve...

Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat have spoken of their delight at last night's bumper ratings for Sherlock's series three premiere 'The Empty Hearse'.
The show picked up 9.2 million viewers on New Year's Day (a 33.8% share) at 9pm on BBC One, considerably higher than its New Year launch in 2012, which had 8.8 million (31%).
Its first series debuted with 7.1 million (28.6%) in 2010.
Speaking about the response, co-creator Moffat said: "Thrilling news on overnight ratings for Sherlock. A tribute to the team who work so hard, and with such pride, on the show, and of course to the genius of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
"It's proof that audiences will show up if you give them what they want - though we can't throw Benedict [Cumberbatch] off a roof ever week."
Gatiss, who wrote the episode, added: "Delighted our loyal audience tuned in on an appropriately bleak and stormy New Year's night!

Sherlock will be returning to BBC One with its anticipated third season in just two days’ time, premiering with its first of three episodes on New Year’s Day, and the broadcaster has recently launched a seven-minute prequel ahead of its return.
The new season picks up two years after The Reichenbach Fall, in which we see Sherlock seemingly committing suicide by stepping off a rooftop, before closing the episode with him watching Watson by his graveside from afar.
It opens with an episode entitled, The Empty Hearse, loosely based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Adventure of the Empty House, in which Conan Doyle brought the character back to life after what was to be his final deathly struggle with Moriarty in The Final Problem.

It's been nearly two years since Benedict Cumberbatch last captivated audiences as his twisted and brilliant version of Sherlock Holmes. Luckily for viewers, Sherlock is coming back on the first day of 2014, and the BBC has given fans a little taster course with a prequel YouTube minisode featuring lots of Martin Freeman's Watson and a smidgen of Cumberbatch's Holmes. The minisode is titled 'Many Happy Returns', a those viewers who saw the season two finale will understand exactly which returns the title is referring to. The "Sherlock" Season 3 mini-episode, "Many Happy Returns," has been posted online early by the good people at the BBC. Now you can watch Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the short video -- the story introduces everything you need for the upcoming season.
While the exact timing of the story is not mentioned, some time has obviously passed since Sherlock Holmes' "death" at the end of Season 2. That evidence spans the world, from Buddhist temples to European court cases.
But Detective Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) isn't buying it. He knows Sherlock is dead.
