Kate Beckinsale was one of the leading actresses who made her breakthrough in the 90s in her small but impressive role as Her in Kenneth Branagh’s Much Ado About Nothing. She continued showcasing her incredible versatility in British costume films such as Prince of Jutland, Cold Comfort Farm, Emma, and The Golden Bowl.

From nuns and handmaids to webslingers and oversexualized teens, Sydney Sweeney has done a fantastic job in her decade and a half of acting.
While she has been dubbed a sex symbol, that title doesn't even begin to define the actress's range of skill when it comes to dramatic roles.
Having amassed 22 awards nominations and securing three wins, primarily for her breakout role in Euphoria, the actress has become a mainstay in the entertainment industry.
Though she's been acting since 2009, it wasn't until recently that she started blowing up the news circuits with her career-defining performances.
One thing that can be said about the actress is that she takes every opportunity to elevate her characters as far as possible.
Here, we've assembled a set of Sweeney's most notable television and film roles. From comedy to horror to gritty drama, the actress is not limiting her role choices.

Sydney Sweeney is an up-and-coming young actor who has taken the world by storm because of her brilliant talent. The American actress has been acting from a young age and she has been around the industry for a long time. She has been doing small roles in many big movies but got her big break because of shows like Everything Sucks! and Sharp Objects, but her stardom reached a new level after her HBO series Euphoria came out.
Sweeney has also enjoyed a healthy film career and has her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films which recently produced the psychological horror film Immaculate while she did technically appear in a Marvel film known as Madame Web, let’s ignore that film as best we can. Whether you love it or hate it—or just hate that you might, kinda, maybe be chill with it—Will Gluck’s Anyone But You has found its audience. The Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell two-hander defied critics and connected with plenty of folks happy to bake in the Australian sun as the film’s stars swam around Port Jackson Bay and debated what it means to be “hot girl fit.” In theaters, the movie over-performed and grossed more than $200 million worldwide, and now on Netflix it’s soared to the top of the movie viewing chart around the world.

It took only three days for Zack Snyder’s sequel for his 2023 Rebel Moon to get to Netflix’s top, but it also took three days for Sydney Sweeney’s Anyone But You to topple Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver from the same chart.

"Anyone But You" became a surprise hit when it arrived in theaters back in December 2023. In an age where everyone is used to superhero movies and the odd horror flick doing well at the box office, surely a rom-com starring two lesser-known stars whose careers are only just starting to get going wasn't going to hit? But hit, it did. "Anyone But You" passed box office milestones, making an impressive $216 million worldwide on just a $25 million budget. Oh, and it was also based on a William Shakespeare play.
It might seem strange to think that a loose adaptation of the Bard's "Much Ado About Nothing," could be so surprisingly popular, but perhaps "Anyone But You" is ushering in a new era of cool Shakespeare adaptations, á la Leonardo DiCaprio with "Romeo + Juliet" back in the mid-'90s. Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney are opening up about the marketing behind their hit rom-com Anyone But You.
The film grossed $219M at the worldwide box office since its release in December. Now Powell and Sweeney are talking about the rumors they were having an affair leading up to the premiere that helped attract moviegoers to see the film.
“The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry,” Powell said in an interview with The New York Times. “Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry. That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sydney is very smart.”

Despite the film’s success, some people have pointed out some overdone and cringy scenes in the film. Being a loose adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, the film’s director Will Gluck addressed the criticisms and pointed out that all those ‘cringy’ tropes and scenes are directly lifted from Shakespeare’s writing.

Sydney Sweeney is a marketing genius. That’s Glen Powell’s reasoning for how their rom-com “Anyone but You” went from anything but a success to a box-office and VOD hit.
“The two things that you have to sell a rom-com are fun and chemistry. Sydney and I have a ton of fun together, and we have a ton of effortless chemistry,” Powell told the New York Times. “That’s people wanting what’s on the screen off the screen, and sometimes you just have to lean into it a bit — and it worked wonderfully. Sweeney, who also executive produced the film through her Fifty-Fifty Films banner, was directly behind the “Anyone but You” marketing strategy. It included romantic pictures of her and Powell, longing looks on red carpets, and lots of flirting in interviews. And when Powell and his long-term girlfriend broke up, the rumors heated up.

When Ilana Wolpert was studying English literature at the prestigious Duke University, she never imagined that one of her first loves – Shakespeare – would lead directly to writing R-rated movies.
But the writer found her life changed when she took a screenwriting class in her senior year, and her love for the classics led her to adapt Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing into a contemporary rom-com. The enemies-to-lovers romance became Anyone But You, and it's coming to streamers this Tuesday.
What's It About?
Ben and Bea meet in a coffee shop and form an instant connection. They spend a perfect day together – but the next morning their wires get crossed, their defenses go up, and they both blame each other for the relationship failing.
Six months later, Bea's sister is getting married. Ben's connection to the family means that they end up on the same flight, and start pushing each other's buttons right away.

Batman actor Michael Keaton reprised his role as the DC hero in the recent comic book film The Flash. Although it’s become a tradition for Batman actors to work out for the role, Keaton was able to skip the process.

Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney turned dating rumors about her and Glen Powell into a humorous gag during her Saturday Night Live hosting debut.
Sweeney and Powell recently starred in the rom-com Anyone but You, a modern take on William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. During filming, Sweeney and Powell’s on-set chemistry stirred up rumors about the two having an affair. Powell was with his girlfriend Gigi Paris at the time while Sweeney is engaged to Jonathan Davino. (Powell and Paris later broke up).

Romcoms has been a fan-favorite genre for a long time now and it’s hard to talk about the genre without mentioning 1999’s 10 Things I Hate About You featuring Heath Ledger. The film was a modernization of William Shakespeare’s comedy The Taming of the Shrew and easily became one of the most popular live-action William Shakespeare adaptations of all time. However, as Hollywood progressed, many new films were made and now fans are worried that 10 Things I Hate About You will soon be demoted from the list.

I'm about to propose a somewhat radical idea, but hear me out: What if enemies ... became lovers? Once upon a time, the studio system used to deliver multiple movies a year riffing on this classic rom-com premise, but recent decades have seen these exact sorts of vehicles for movie stars falling by the wayside more and more. After all, we just have to make room for more superhero movies like "Madame Web," don't we? But in a highly ironic twist, one disaster of a Sydney Sweeney-starring production has given way to another much more successful one -- and the same studio is responsible for both. Sensing a lesson here, folks? In short, long live rom-coms!
"Anyone But You" maybe didn't reinvent the wheel or anything, as laid out in Marshall Shaffer's review for /Film, but co-leads Sweeney and Glen Powell certainly managed to charm their ways into the hearts of audiences worldwide.

Sony’s Madame Web hit theaters worldwide on Valentine’s Day, and the film is getting universally panned by critics and fans alike.
Criticism is being aimed at almost every aspect of the movie, including its messy plot, sub-par dialogue, poor special effects, and miscasting of its star ensemble.
Much criticism has been directed at the casting of Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, the awkward teenage girl destined to become a Spider-Woman.
However, as these five previous roles prove, Sweeney hasn’t always been so miscast as she was in the terrible Madame Web.
Sharp Objects
Sydney Sweeney as Alice in Sharp Objects.
The miniseries Sharp Objects is an HBO psychological thriller based on Gillian Flynn’s brilliant 2006 debut novel. It chronicles the exploits of an alcoholic crime reporter, only recently discharged from a psychiatric ward after self-harming for years, who returns to her hometown to investigate the murders of two young girls.

It does not take much time in the era of social media for a photo or a moment to get attention online. It is also bound to cause a stir worldwide when it features an alluring photo of such stunning stars. Recently, the renowned filmmaker Will Gluck blew everyone away when he shared a not-safe-for-work (Nsfw) picture of Anyone But You’s leading face, Glen Powell. Did we also mention that this snap was pretty sure to become an internet sensation?
Sydney Sweeney and Powell made significant contributions to the rom-com genre towards the end of last year. Audiences were eager to see how they heated up the screen after their 103-minute flick became one of the most talked-about movies of the year. Sony’s Anyone But You, which was co-written and directed by Gluck, is billed as a contemporary—and a very loose— adaptation of William Shakespeare’s comedy Much Ado About Nothing.

I suppose going into a movie like Anyone But You with no expectations helps it land in the “oh, it really wasn’t that bad” category. I’m the exact target demographic for this film; it’s a rom-com with the cheesiness of late 90s and early 2000s rom-coms, two of the hottest (white) actors on the scene today, and a ridiculously cringy plot that is predictable from start to finish. It’s entertaining; there’s some gorgeous scenery and some splendid outfits, and everyone looks stunning, but the most important thing is that the heart is believable amidst the glamour and snark of it all. No, this is not some Oscar-worthy film, nor is it the best romance you’ve ever seen, and no, it’s not even the best comedy you’ve ever seen, but it’s still infectiously amusing, so I’d say it’s worth a watch.

TikTok may have just saved romantic comedies from being banished forever from the big screen to the hinterlands of streaming.

Anyone But You filmmaker Will Gluck has returned to the genre in which he first made his name.
The New York native has spent much of the past decade making family films such as Annie (2014) and two Peter Rabbit movies, mainly because he wanted to entertain his own young family. Now that his children are older, Gluck has made his way back to the star-driven (and star-making) romantic comedy after beginning his romcom career with Emma Stone and Penn Badgley in 2010’s Easy A and then Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake in 2011’s Friends with Benefits. He’s currently taking the same approach with Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell in Anyone But You, which is loosely based on William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing.
With the major studios all deprioritizing the comedy genre the last handful of years, Gluck admits that he felt a pressure to recapture the theatrical...

A convincing romantic and erotic attraction, we can all agree, is one of the keys to a good rom-com. Do you believe these two people love each other? Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell definitely have that in “Anyone but You.” It begins with the simple fact that both are such splendid camera objects. She, with her goldfish eyes and pout of self-possession, looks like a more wised-up, no-nonsense Brigitte Bardot, while he, with his squinty eyes and killer grin, resembles Tom Cruise with a weird touch of the young Dustin Hoffman’s geek glamour. These two have “mega movie stars of tomorrow” written all over them, though not merely because they look so good. Both are lightning-fast actors, delivering the spiked screwball banter and — important for this movie — the toxic insults with airy aplomb.
For, of course, the history of romantic comedy is also powered by another dynamic, one nearly as important as love.

"What it's about is making things surprising but inevitable," the legendary composer Stephen Sondheim once mused about the nature of storytelling to his biographer. This maxim applies doubly so for genre entertainment like romantic comedies. To woo audiences, they must make familiar tropes and trajectories feel foreign.
Trying to hold space for both focusing on the new and forgetting the nondescript finds expression within the narrative of "Anyone But You," a spin on rom-com lore. As she surveys the protruding arches of the immediately recognizable Sydney Opera House, Bea (Sydney Sweeney) reveals that she'd like to go there ... but not to admire the architecture. Instead, she wants to watch how the people who convene at the landmark interact with the building — and each other.
Her strategy could be plausibly extrapolated to provide a viewing guide for the film at large. "Anyone But You" knows viewers are well acquainted with the structure of the rom-com,...
