Exceptional French Tunisian drama
Mozjoukine15 April 2004
The French Arab co-productions are a consistent source of superior films and this may well be their peak achievement.

Michel Boujenah gives an outstanding leading performance. "Because you are fat and poor, you think you can treat everyone like trash" his victim wife reproaches him, giving some hint of the complexity of the writing.

The action sprawls through being Jewish in WW2 (again!) the Arab resistance, belly dancer weddings, flour as the Tunisian oil, lost love, folklorico detail, spectacular historical re-staging.

Nice to find French main stream regulars Nat and Hanin mixed into all this.
