The crew finished shooting the movie within only 27 days as a side project of Kar-Wai Wong's masterpiece, Ashes of Time (1994). During the production of Ashes of Time, the crew was running out of time and money. Due to the tremendous pressure from the investors, the crew including all the stars agreed to make this short comedy movie for the Chinese New Year. The two films are based on the same story. While some of the same characters appear in both movies, Jacky Cheung is the only actor to play the same character in both.
In addition to a score by James Wong, the film contains a song set to the overture from Gioachino Rossini's Guillaume Tell, as well as uncredited excerpts from "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" from Georges Bizet's Carmen and Danse des petits cygnes from Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.
