This was hands down the worst anime I have ever seen...
bickeringbird9 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
... Or quite possibly, the worst, well, anything I have ever seen. And let me tell you, I have seen some terrible things.

It's actually quite difficult to put into words just how mind-bogglingly atrocious this series is, and yet I suppose I'll have to try. God give me strength.

To begin, absolutely nothing makes sense. One may find a inconsistencies in even the best fiction, but in DNA^2, the very premise is a glaring plot hole: Supposedly, the leading lady Karin travels nary a century back in time to stop Junta, a boy with a genetic mutation, from overpopulating the world. The writers argue that since Junta fathered 100 children, and his children fathered 100 children, and so on, the world would boast an extra million or so people (I'm using my math here; the show only claimed an extra 12,000. Did I mention this makes no sense?). Considering how much the world population has grown in the last 10 years, this is kind of a drop in a bucket. Not to mention, there are a huge number of factors which would make this estimate a wild overreach (for example, how many of those children would have been aborted, how many of the women he impregnated would have had children anyway, etc.).

I suppose one could make the case that the population explosion was only limited to Japan, so it would still be a problem. But that brings me to another plot hole: even if Karin was sent back on time to control the future's population and wipe out the excess people, she's ... umm ... still wiping out excess people. Which is a) horrible, and b) guaranteed to catastrophically alter the future in ways no one could expect.

Beyond the main storyline, not a minute passed where someone didn't behave nonsensically or spout the most inappropriate dialogue.

Now, I know what you're all thinking: whatever, it's mindless fun, so turn off your brain and just enjoy the ride. Unfortunately, DNA^2 is not only mindless, but clichéd and predictable. I can't recall a single character who had a shred of personality beyond their own personal gimmick, save for maybe Ami or Tomoko, who doesn't have much going for them, either. Most of the humor is based on bodily fluids, and though it's intended to offset a constant stream of fan service, the two sort of cancel each other out in an odd way; the fan service ceases to be sexy when all you can focus on is Junta's mouth bulging with vomit, and the gross-out humor just becomes sad considering its context.

Any other humor is either cheesy or just plain bizarre. And let me make this clear: When it's done well, I like cheesy and I love bizarre. But DNA^2 was not so much well done as it was like watching a socially inept 11-year-old try to tell a joke.

Admittedly, it does get better toward the end, and the OVA is sometimes even good enough to be mediocre (though it is a little more serious, but maybe that's why?). Unfortunately, the final scenes of both plummet the series right back down into the abysmal.

Unless you intend to watch this with a group strictly for lampooning or riffing, I would strongly suggest you stay away.

The Mega-Playboy is Born!
Lady_Targaryen19 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This anime is so funny and entertaining! I consider it to be a comedy more than anything else! The story is quite fantastic, with girls coming from the future, boys allergic to girls and a future world, that a single guy, will make a big mess with so many heirs, but that's what makes the anime so cool! Sadly I didn't finish to watch it until the end, but I read the whole Manga and I liked it very much!

Junta Momonari is a high school student with a bizarre problem that always makes him distant from the girls: Whenever he becomes aroused by a woman, his "female allergy" kicks in, and the poor boy throws up. Not to mention that he is terrible with the girls, the kind of guy who is too shy and awkward. One day, he meets Karin Aoi, a cute girl who proves to be from the future, and that suddenly shoots him. She is a DNA operator, and her job is to change Junta's DNA to avoid him to become the Mega Playboy, a guy with such a sexual charisma that will make the world overpopulated in the future with his sons and heirs. What Karin will later know, is that she was the one who CREATED him, since the bullet was wrong...

Excellent concept, but leaves MUCH to be desired.
cobra-ky16 July 2012
I'd like to start off by saying that this was a new experience for me. This is the first anime I have watched in full, and I was even inspired read the manga (another first for me). However, I thoroughly enjoyed this series as a whole. I did think that some of the humor was slightly cheesy and run into the ground, but most of it was alright. I think that the character development was excellent for most characters, especially in Karin's case. Karin Aoi starts off as a naive girl with a fiery personality, but as she is forced to make tough decisions, Karin becomes a very mature young woman.

There are a few things that ruin this series for me, and the front runner of those is the ending...Now, I won't ruin it for anyone, but because of the ending, I'd love to meet the writer of this series, shake his hand, and punch him in the face. The ending ruined the entire series (for me anyways). Instead of walking away having enjoyed a great story, I am just left here wondering what possessed Katsura to write this ending. It's just heart-wrenching and depressing.

You may be wondering by now why this got a 7 from me by now, after reading my rant about the awful ending. I gave it a 7 because of the great character development, the decent story, the great artwork an animation, and how memorable it was. I would recommend this series (and the manga) to almost anyone, considering the fact that I'm not even into this kind of stuff and I enjoyed it.

Also, a message to Katsura and the other creators that won't read this: If you were to pick this project back up for a spin off series for Karin, you'd have a gold mine. She was a fan-favorite from what I've heard, and I can guarantee that it would be a hit, so long as you don't screw it up again. Please pick it back up and give us an ending that doesn't SUCK.

Under Rated
jamesbright-4398520 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The show deserve a general rating of 8 +. It was under Rated indeed and out of too many shows I've watched, this is one of my favorites. To some point, i prefer it to Attack on Titan and Fairytale and for the dude who said it's unrealistic, I disagree. This is the only japanese anime I've watched so far with a more realistic storyline unlike Naruto and co. Please think properly before you write a review. I love the show and really hoped that Junta ended up with Karen which never worked out really since she was from the future. So you see, quite realistic.

If Dragon Ball Z was a romantic comedy
elonmusk-is_a_moron12 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
When I was a young teen I was very into this series; I know some people accused it of being a "Dragon Ball Z rip-off" due the main character resembling a bit super saiyan Goku, and even having a transformation sequence, but those similarities were what captured my attention on the first place.

And no, the series isn't a "rip-off" despite taking some visual inspirations from Dragon Ball Z. It's more like a romantic comedy with some science-fiction and action elements. Also, the characters are completely different, personality wise. The same goes for the themes and story.

It honestly seems people are just very quick to dismiss some stuff as "rip-off" of the mere basis of surface similarities.

It was a good series. Kinda wish it a had a more satisfying conclusion, but it was entertaining to watch.
