Want to make a short film based on one of Stephen King's stories? Chances are that it'll only cost you a dollar...
Stephen King is, you might say, a bit prolific. With over 50 novels, 6 nonfiction books, and 200 short stories to his name (or Richard Bachman's), King has one of the hardest-working pens/typewriters/laptops in the writing world. And best of all, when it comes to King's work, quantity does equal quality.
That's probably why Hollywood is constantly optioning his countless works for big blockbuster film adaptations. Guys like Frank Darabont, Brian De Palma, Stanley Kubrick, George A. Romero, John Carpenter, Lawrence Kasdan, and Rob Reiner have all taken stabs (no pun intended) at his work. Many of them are even great films that hold their own, which is very rare in the novel-to-film adaptation business, especially when the source material is as high-profile as King's.

One of the main attractions at this year’s Comicpalooza in Houston—in addition to appearances by the likes of Patrick Stewart, Michelle Rodriguez and Danny Trejo—was the three-day Dollar Baby Film Festival organized by Shawn S. Lealos.
What’s a “Dollar Baby?” It’s a short film based on a Stephen King story or novella. For decades, King has allowed people to acquire limited film rights to an available story for one dollar. The resulting movies cannot be released on the internet or shown at for-profit venues, which limits their availability to festivals like this one. The filmmakers can include their movies on clip reels as calling cards. King also gets a copy of the finished product. The quality of these adaptations is all over the map, but the increased availability of affordable digital cameras and video editing software means that the community is growing by leaps and bounds.

To celebrate their 13th anniversary this year, the Melbourne Underground Film Festival is going green!
No, they’re not out to save the kookaburra or anything. Instead, they’re hosting a special tribute to the New Irish Low Budget Cinema, featuring two films by acclaimed filmmaker Ivan Kavanagh, plus work by Colin Downey, Gary Kenneally and Gerard Lough.
Muff will host a repeat screening of Kavanagh’s celebrated thriller Tin Can Man — it previously screened at Muff in 2008 — as well as his latest film, The Fading Light. The three other Irish films screening all fall into the horror/thriller genres, from Downey’s The Looking Glass to Kenneally’s Stephen King adaptation The Boogeyman and Lough’s trilogy-ending The Shaken 3. And, in addition, the entire fest kicks off with the opening night Irish thriller Charlie Casanova by Terry McMahon.
But don’t think Muff is all Irish all the time this year,...

One thing you learn as you delve deeper and deeper into the recesses of good horror is that the indie films being put out by you the fans are often the ones with the most creativity and the best storytelling. You may not have large scale budgets or big name actors but the creativity shown more times than not blows us away. As is the case with this film, which by the way is based off the Stephen King short...

Oh sweet divine jebus…where do I even begin with this one?! The Boogeyman is a short film of the horror variety, well that’s what it’s supposed to be anyway. And yes it’s short (not short enough in my opinion) but is it a horror? Hell no! Ireland has never excelled in the horror genre stakes. For me the closest the Irish film industry has come to a genuine horror was back in 2007 when Paddy Breathnach directed Shrooms, a Treasure Entertainment release. The premise for Shrooms was brilliant – a pack of American sex-craved teenagers go looking for mushies aka magic mushrooms in the woods in Ireland and end up being slaughtered in unimaginative ways. Although the film was devoid of suspense or end of your seat moments or even credible dialogue, it had ambition. What then for Ger Lough’s The Boogeyman, which is based on what is,...

An Irish Filmmaker, Gerard Lough has recently completed a film based on a short story by Stephen King, which is a first for an Irish filmmaker, as far as I know. The movie is on the festival rounds at the moment and can be seen at the Horrorthon film festival in Dublin on Oct 25th and the Dollar Baby Festival in the Netherlands on Nov 13th. Press Release follows as does the trailer! I have never read Stephen King’s short story The Boogeyman, but now that I know there’s a short film adaptation on the way, I’m going to have to seek it out post-haste! We’ve got a look at the poster today so come on in and check it out!
From director Gerard Lough’s YouTube Channel: When Andrew Billings (Simon Fogarty) goes to see a psychologist to explain how an evil creature that lives in his closet is responsible for the deaths of his three children, he is met with disbelief. But as the story progresses, both Dr. Harper (Michael Parle) and the audience will start to consider the possibility that this "boogeyman" might be real after all.
No word yet one when/where we’ll be able to catch this sucker, but we’ll keep you posted.
