- Senta Berger plays Teresa, a businesswoman about to turn 50, married to Adam and with a student daughter. The marriage is already a bit worn out and the daughter is stubborn and insensitive. When she also pinches her sciatic nerve, her mood gets even worse, and after an unpleasant conversation with her daughter, she cancels her long-planned annual birthday party. The next morning she meets Lorenz, one of her daughter's overnight guests, in the bathroom. He is obviously just a one-night stand, but she tries to ask him questions, but can't get any more out of him than that he is an investment advisor. It's Teresa's birthday and so she visits her mother, who also has little time for her, after which she decides to have her hair cut and looks forward to an evening with her husband as a couple. But he has organized a surprise party for her with everyone she had cancels. During the course of the evening, all sorts of things go wrong and she leaves the apartment without further ado and runs out into the street. While wandering aimlessly, she observes a pimp and a prostitute jumping out of an old Cadillac and arguing in the street. Teresa spontaneously gets into the open car and drives off. She stops at the edge of the Vienna Woods and discovers a suitcase full of money and a gun in the car. After an encounter with a caring policeman, she wants to get rid of the stolen car, but just manages to get to a gas station with an empty tank. There she meets Lorenz, the supposed investment advisor, who is only a mechanic and gas station attendant. She tells him that she has stolen the car and would now like to get rid of it at a poker game. After some initial resistance, the young man is persuaded to help her in return for a share of the money. Together they go to a secret poker game in a sleazy pub, where Teresa, with a lot of effort and trickery, finally succeeds in being allowed to play and is thoroughly fleeced. Meanwhile, Lorenz is allowed to wait outside the door. When the car is used as final security and Lorenz shows the innkeeper the car, he recognizes the vehicle and calls the owner. In the meantime, the tables have turned and Teresa has won everything back in the last game, plus the money from the last player. But now that everything seems to be going so well, the owner of the car and money case is suddenly in the room. Only with the help of Lorenz, who turns up with a gun and shoots the pimp in the leg, is Teresa able to escape from the bar and they both speed off in the Cadillac. The other player, the landlord and the shot pimp follow them in a car and a fast-paced chase through Vienna at night begins. When the journey ends in a dead end, Teresa and Lorenz manage to jump into an approaching train and outrun their pursuers. They find an empty sleeping car compartment and Lorenz confesses to Teresa that he only joined them because he had fallen in love with her. They then spend the night together. The next morning, Teresa packs most of the loot into Lorenz's jacket and tries to steal out of the compartment. But Lorenz wakes up and she says goodbye, asking him not to forget her. She gets off at the next stop and the train continues with Lorenz to Taormina in Italy. When Teresa arrives back home, she finds her daughter in tears, as she has now realized the many ways in which she has offended and hurt her mother. The husband is also very remorseful, only Teresa's mother is confident that she will reappear. When she enters the room, there is great relief, but she does not answer the question of where she has been. She also asks her husband not to ask any questions if he still loves her. Next, we see Teresa and her husband at the train station, leaving on vacation together, saying goodbye to their daughter. Teresa asks about Lorenz. Her daughter tells her about a postcard from Sicily, where he is on vacation. As the parents leave on the train, the daughter takes the postcard out of her bag and reads the text again, where Lorenz also sends greetings to her mother. Eventually she realizes that the train is also on its way to Taormina.
