Wynonna Judd still gets nervous about performing on stage. Shortly after joining Jelly Roll onstage at the 2023 CMA Awards for a duet of his song “Need a Favor,” Judd addressed concerns from fans after they noticed that she gripped onto Jelly Roll during the entirety of the performance.
“Okay, so they say don’t read the comments – I’ve read the comments,” she said in the video. “I’m just gonna come clean with y’all: I was so freaking nervous. I got out there, and I looked at Jelly...

Jelly Roll came out on top at last night’s CMA Awards, opening the show with a boisterous performance of “Need a Favor” alongside Wynonna Judd and joining K. Michelle to sing the Judds‘ “Love Can Build a Bridge” for the finale. He even managed to snag the New Artist of the Year between performances. But it seems the night’s excitement might have gotten the best of the face-tattooed singer-rapper — Jelly Roll dropped his trophy before he could even get it home, shattering it to pieces.

Jelly Roll is the year’s breakout country star, a larger-than-life character with so much heat right now that the producers of the CMA Awards chose him to open the show. The face-tattooed singer-rapper from Antioch, Tennessee, sang a boisterous “Need a Favor” with help from an unannounced guest: Wynonna Judd.

Wynonna Judd told Et on Sunday that her return to the CMT Music Awards is “bittersweet,” adding that she would use this weekend’s award ceremony as an opportunity to help others struggling with their mental health.
During her performance of “I Want To Know What Love Is” with Ashley McBryde, Wynonna pointed to the sky and said, “Mama, you need to be here.”
Wynonna and her late mother, Naomi Judd, delivered their first TV performance in two decades at last year’s CMTs. The performance turned out to be the duo’s final one together; Naomi died by suicide weeks later.
“I’m going to use my time to talk to anyone out there who is struggling,” Wynonna told Et’s Cassie Dilaura of her appearance at Sunday’s awards. “It’s an opportunity to help somebody.”
“It’s a bittersweet time,” Wynonna continued, adding that her granddaughter will turn one later this month.

Wynonna Judd is sharing her thoughts on how she is doing a month after her mother, Naomi, died by suicide at the age of 76.
In a moving message on Instagram, Judd writes, “Checking in. There is so much happening in the world right now. So before I sat down to write this, I thought, ‘No…I just don’t know what to say.’ Then, I heard the words from my life coach asking me, ‘What do you know?’ And I began to cry.”
She continued, “What Do I Know?? I Do know, that the pain of losing Mom on 4/30 to suicide is so great, that I often feel like I’m not ever going to be able to fully accept and surrender to the truth that she left the way she did. This cannot be how The Judds story ends.

“Naomi Judd: A River of Time Celebration” was broadcast live on CMT Sunday night two weeks and one day after the country music legend died. But it hadn’t been half that long in the planning. The show’s gestation really came just a week prior to air date, on — appropriately enough — Mother’s Day. That was when executive producer Jason Owen considered a wish that Naomi had put into her will several years back: that a memorial be held at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. The only date the storied venue had open on which cameras and crowds could come in was just seven days ago. So Owen and his producing partners at CMT did what Naomi would have done: They hustled.
The expedience with which the show was produced worked in its favor, as there was still plenty of raw emotion to go around to lend the show its share of raw emotion.

Earlier this month, the Judds reunited to give their first awards-show performance in two decades, singing the timeless ballad “Love Can Build a Bridge” at the 2022 CMT Music Awards. Tragically, the performance also proved to be their last following Saturday’s shocking news of Naomi Judd’s death at 76.
For their rendition of the 1990 Top 5 hit, Naomi and daughter Wynonna sang face to face on an outdoor stage in front of Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum — the very institution that was to induct them as members this Sunday.
