So much promise turns to lead
dillo28 September 2003
Bob Hoskins does the most convincing American accent I've ever heard a British actor do, but directing doesn't seem to come as naturally as dialect. This movie features unattractive leading children, unbelievable school situations, stereotypical 'media' types, and completely fails to persuade even the most credulous that the magic is *there*. Special effects are variable, but generally poor. Unconvincing acting ruins what might have been rather good dialogue. It's a shame. I really, really wanted to like this movie, but there was no there there.

1 of the crappiest/boring movie ever
beeble_bee4 October 2005
Warning: Spoilers
crap storyline....long story short. Three kids, one of em is called Mike and he has an older brother (who steals 3 gold pieces of prism from the rainbow) and 2 other of Mikey's friends chase a rainbow and travel through the rainbow. By the older brother's greedy action to steal the gold which make part of the structure of the rainbow, it starts to affect their world. Without light, there is no colour, no photosynthesis...no oxygen. This movie is a cross between Pleasantville and War Of The Worlds, but kids' style. This movie bored me to death. Ending was so predictable. Bad stunts and bad acting. Bad concept. Overall..it sucks...it's categorised as comedy. Throughout the movie, i did not laugh. I only laughed once, was when one of Mike's friends, sucked in helium n began 2 speak in that squeaky voice.

Another children's family film where the only decent adults are the really old ones.
mark.waltz26 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Looking like they've been packed up in a box of skittles, four kids end up riding a rainbow that takes them on an adventure led by a dog. The only adult in this film that gets anything good to do is Bob Hopkins, while everyone else (including Dan Ackroyd as a truly dumb sheriff) is obnoxious and one dimensional. The four kids, not all of the same age, don't even seem like kids that would hang out together outside of the two brothers, and the adventure isn't really all that exciting.

Like so many other films of this genre, I had high hopes for it but it ends up being a misfire in trying to recapture the magic of classic fantasies like "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Blue Bird". It's cheaply filmed and often nasty, I'd rather boring so I do not think that kids could sit there for 90 minutes and find anything to enjoy. But when Hopkins is on screen, a bit of magic does strike, and he ends up being the only thing worthwhile in this, reminding me of Jason Robards in "The Real Macaw".

AWESOME!!!, up there with goonies and flight of navigator

Wow!!! So happy I have finally got to see this. Remember seeing it in the video shop as a kid and the cover looked magical. Picked it up for 20p from a charity shop today. IT IS SO COOL.

Basically these kids hang round a train yard playing in the trains and exploring the city. One day one of them sees a rainbow land in front of him and its the most magical thing ever. Now all the kids want to find the rainbow again....maybe it will take them somewhere....maybe it will change everything.....

Hope you enjoy it. Kids from age of 7 to 10 should absolutely love this.

I'm 29 and I love it so adults should like it a lot too.

Reminds me of Childhood
lillambie27 June 2011
I used to watch this a few times when I was a child, and it is one of the movies I always think of when I say to myself 'childhood movies'.

It is a fantastic movie, one which can also teach children a moral lesson: 'Do not take what is not yours' and 'If you don't know what it is, leave it alone.'

It is a truly magical tale of finding the ever beautiful and ever colourful Rainbow and what happens to the world when it becomes void of such a beautiful spectacle.

Sadly, the movie is very hard to get a hold of nowadays, but I'd recommend anyone who can find it to watch it ASAP!

wonderful adventure
imdb2-3727 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I think the folks who didn't like the second half missed the point -- its supposed to show the world falling apart, becoming dull & lifeless... the Rainbow gives power, light, and energy to the Earth. I thought it was a great fantasy movie, especially for kids -- it has an original story, with a wise and timeless moral lesson that is not too heavy handed. The effects are outstanding, especially remember this film is from 1996. The ride inside the rainbow is worth the price of the whole movie. How many of us wish we could go inside that kind of ride? If you're looking for a decent family film without sex, violence, or a puppet show, here's a real film both kids and parents can enjoy... its a good one for everybody
