Before Harvey Weinstein‘s career was upended by allegations of sexual assault from a number of women, the film mogul’s influence extended beyond Hollywood — and into politics.
The movie mogul — who is now spending time in an Arizona luxury resort after numerous accusations from high-profile women including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Kate Beckinsale — donated nearly $1 million in his own name to Democratic politicians over the past 17 years, according to Business Insider.

May 2015 was the last time Harvey Weinstein hosted a Cannes presentation at the Majestic Hotel. Among the titles was a preview of Justin Chadwick’s “Tulip Fever,” with the then white-hot Swedish actress Alicia Vikander on hand. A romantic triangle period piece costarring Christoph Waltz and Dane DeHaan, Weinstein later pushed the release from July 2016 to February 2017. Now, two years later, it’s booked for August 25 — the dog days of summer.
Last year, the Weinstein Co. had so few bonafide Oscar contenders on the docket that they didn’t mount their usual Cannes show-and-tell at all. Garth Davis’s “Lion” did yield six nominations and, like critics’ darling “Carol” the year before, no wins. The lengthy awards season did pay off for “Lion” at the box office; it’s made $103 million worldwide. However, it also represents a rare tick in the ‘win’ column for TWC, which is struggling to maneuver in these challenging times.

As the specialized film industry concentrates on the Toronto International Film Festival, new movies do continue to open around the country.
The leading opener this weekend, Gravitas Ventures’ “For the Love of Spock,” had a strong initial take via Video on Demand home-viewing venues.
Opening
“For the Love of Spock” (Gravitas Ventures) – Metacritic: 74; Festivals include: Tribeca 2016; also available on Video on Demand
$42,000 in 34 theaters; PTA: $1,235
The key number isn’t the slight theatrical take. It’s the reported $400,000 initial take on streaming platforms, where it is ranked best among independent and documentary releases. “Star Trek” and Leonard Nimoy fans found the vehicle to connect with for the 50th anniversary of the original TV show’s debut.
What comes next: Expect ongoing interest for this, mostly in home viewing.
“Author: The Jt Leroy Story” (Magnolia) – Metacritic: 74; Festivals include: Sundance, San Francisco, Seattle 2016

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.

These days especially, what matters in a three-and-a-half hour awards show like Sunday's 86th annual Academy Awards is not who won or lost -- though the victories for Steve McQueen's "12 Years a Slave" and Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" seemed to be part of history in the making -- but which moments were most likely to go viral.
In case you missed the Ellen DeGeneres-hosted extravaganza -- or nodded off at some point during its 212 minutes -- here are the best and worst of the evening's memorable moments.

In the end, you're not going to remember who won and lost, but who made you laugh or cringe or mist up. Here, then, were the most memorable moments of Sunday night's 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards show, for good or ill.
Best: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's Opening Monologue
Their material wasn't as solid as last year, but they still landed some devastating blows, satirically speaking. Best lines: Poehler, noting that Woody Allen was following Martin Scorsese as a winner of the Globes' Cecil B. DeMille award for lifetime achievement, inferring that the award must be for "the tiniest man with the biggest glasses." Or Fey, observing that "Gravity" was about "how George Clooney would rather float away in space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age." Or Fey, again, remarking on Matthew McConaughey's 45-pound weight loss for his "Dallas Buyers Club" role,...

Bastards [Les salauds] begins, like Garrel's Un été brûlant, at night, with a suicide. An explanation for the gesture will never come, although, through the film's near imperceptible ellipses, it comes close. A film of profoundly somber gloam, of loneliness and anger and even stifled madness, of complicity and solitude, its sadness is almost absolute.
A torrid string connects a cast predominantly made up from Claire Denis' family of actors: Vincent Lindon, Michel Subor, Alex Descas, Grégoire Colin. There are so many of them that they stand out as coming from somewhere before, some shared place, and their figures seem at once human and also something more so, grander, archetypal. (Lola Créton creates a similar effect in a small role with such a brief but so recognizable presence that it both reaches outside the story, as well as expanding something within.

Green Arrow is a perennial second string DC Comics character that has recently become more popular again through the successful CW show Arrow, whose premiere was the highest rated CW program in three years and was recently picked up for a second season. He also will be a playable character in the upcoming fighting video game Injustice: God Among Us. Previously, he made many guest appearances in the animated shows Justice League Unlimited and Young Justice (where he was voiced by Firefly star Alan Tudyk). But before becoming famous on the silver screen, Oliver Queen aka Green Arrow began as a Batman/Robin Hood quasi-rip off in DC Comics’ More Fun Comics 73 (1941) which also marked the debut of Aquaman (who is cool now).

As you can see, DC is clearly getting excited about the imminent arrival of The Dark Knight Rises with new movie statues showing Anne Hathaway, Christian Bale, and Tom Hardy, the return of Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham’s Batman Incorporated and the long awaited arrival of Batman: Earth One by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, and the Talon appearing in every single Batman book this month… and even All-Star Western?
Plus, with the return of Earth One, we also get the return of Earth Two– and the return of the World’s Finest.
Shall we get into it? Let’s!
As always, spoilers may lurk beyond this point.

Cuthbert Cringeworthy from The Bash Street Kids. Zilly from Dastardly And Muttley. Shaggy from Scooby Doo. Some of the biggest wimps known to humankind. Quaking, weedy scaredycats who would run a mile even when faced with the prospect of visiting the zoo. But never in this Petrified Parade would we include...
The Daleks???!!??
The evil pepperpots are forces for fear and terror throughout the galaxy. They rewrote the Intergalactic Guide To Fiendish Deeds. They're so racist that even Alf Garnett would blush. They'd shoot you even if you gave them a fancy birthday present in a colourful box and bow. In short, they're the perfect baddies for Doctor Who, since they stand for every force of evil in the universe.
Now take those two problems, multiply them by 50 billion and you have the real issue with Victory Of The Daleks.
For a Dalek story, Victory Of The Daleks hasn't had...

Tomorrow sees the arrival of the third episode in the new Doctor Who series and some familiar enemies are returning.
Victory of the Daleks sees the Doctor (Matt Smith) and his companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) called to London during the Second World War by British prime minister Winston Churchill, an old friend of the Time Lord.
The Doctor finds the Daleks posing as a secret weapon called 'ironsides' which Churchill believes will help him win the war.
We have here a special sneak peek at the episode, with stills showing the Doctor and Amy as well as Ian McNeice as Churchill and Bill Paterson as a character called Bracewell.
Regular readers who saw my interview with Justin Richards, a writer and consultant for the BBC's Doctor Who books, will recall a teasing mention of Churchill making an appearance.

Item #1 - How Bruce Lee Changed The World
For those of us who love Bruce Lee’s influence on modern Asian cinema you’ve probably seen many incarnations of program in some form or another. Like an 80’s DJ who is ultimately limited by the fact that there is a finite number of tracks they can play, there seems to have been so much overlap with footage we’ve seen with regard to the man who was wickedly charismatic and destined for far more than we were given.
Thankfully, as I watched How Bruce Lee Changed The World,...
