Sex & Nudity

  • There are a few scenes where boys and girls kiss - nothing explicit, though.
  • A teenage girl wears a short skirt to school to impress her boyfriend, because he said that he loved her legs. Some fellow male classmates comment that she looks "hot".

Violence & Gore

  • The abusive teenage boy in this movie is also a star wrestler at his high school, which paves the way for several wrestling matches. This ultimately parallels his abusive ways with women throughout the film.
  • A boy throws his girlfriend against a wall. She's later seen with a bruise.
  • In several scenes, you hear a boy and girl arguing. Sometimes he slaps her, throws things at her, etc...
  • A girl has several bruises all over her body from her abusive boyfriend.
  • Please see below for more details.

Profanity

  • There are a few mild swear words such as "hell" or "damn".
  • A teenage boy calls his girlfriend a slut during an argument.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • At a dance, some boys are seen drinking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A teenage girl is abused physically and emotionally by her boyfriend throughout the film. Some examples are:
  • ~ He often screams at her, calls her names, and gets angry when she hangs out with her friends or dresses in a way that might cause other boys to look at her.
  • ~ He is yelling at her in one scene, and when she tries to go after him, she trips on some rocks and falls on her face. Instead of apologizing, he blames her for getting him all wound up in the first place.
  • ~ During a fight between the two, we hear him slap her hard from another room, and she yells "Ow!" although we don't actually see it.
  • ~ When he gets angry at her one day at school, he comes up from behind her and slams her locker shut while she is using it. About a minute later, he completely snaps and hits her hard, making her fall to the ground.
  • ~ After getting into a huge fight with her boyfriend, she goes to her best friend's house to shower and stay overnight. While she is in the shower, you can see bruises all over her body. She keeps getting an exhausted look on her face, almost as if she is about to faint (although she doesn't).
  • As a side note, the teenage girl's mother is stuck in an unhealthy relationship, as well. The film doesn't go into much detail about her circumstances, but it is clarified that her boyfriend is abusive toward her, and her daughter is aware of it.
  • Bottom line: This film contains many dramatizations related to physical and emotional abuse that many young women face with their boyfriends. The situations presented can be categorized as "worst case scenarios". It should be viewed by mature audiences only. It may be all right for teenagers to see and educate themselves on the issues, but ideally, they'd watch it with a parent, teacher, or other adult who could hold a discussion with them afterwards.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A boy stabs his girlfriend (not shown graphically) then throws her into a lake. There is not much blood or gore, although we do see blood on his hands afterward.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • ~ At the end of the movie, we witness the teenage girl's death. We see her struggling against her boyfriend, who has a pocket knife and slits her throat with it. We don't see any blood at all, nor is the wound shown, but the audience can see the girl's eyes slowly close. Then her boyfriend drags her unconscious body across the sand, throws her body in a black garbage bag and tapes it shut, then tosses it off a boat and into the lake. In the next scene, the police finally find the body, and they open the bag to show that it is indeed her. The audience sees the top part of her face for about one second. Her mother and best friend start screaming and crying hysterically when they see this. The two scenes, back to back, are very disturbing to watch.
  • When the girl goes missing right after having a fight with her boyfriend, a search party begins and lasts for several days. It becomes increasingly obvious that the boyfriend is involved in this, and he is pressed for questions by her mother and the police.
  • When the teenage boy is convicted of murdering his girlfriend, he is sentenced to jail time.
